FYI:

NBC in 2009-10:
Four New Series This Fall; At Least Four More in Midseason

Led, of course, by the 10 p.m. weeknight arrival of talker The Jay Leno Show and the return of Sunday Night Football, NBC’s main priority is to tighten the Monday to Friday 8-10 p.m. block. With that in mind, the network will introduce four new series this fall (dramas Trauma and Parenthood; sitcom Community; and aforementioned The Jay Leno Show), with changes impacting six nights of the week.

Monday will open with Heroes at the earlier 8 p.m. hour, followed by new medical drama Trauma at 9 p.m. and Leno at 10 p.m. The Biggest Loser will remain two hours this fall on Tuesday, leading into Leno, but the midseason edition will be trimmed to 90-minutes, segueing into new sitcom 100 Questions at 9:30 p.m. Parenthood, a new family drama, will anchor Wednesday, followed by relocated Law & Order: SVU and the Leno talker. Thursdays this fall will open with short-flight SNL Weekend Update, which is expected to air for six weeks, followed by returning comedies Parks & Recreation and The Office from 8:30-9:30 p.m. Community, a new sitcom, will temporarily inherit the 9:30 p.m. half hour until it moves to 8 p.m. once SNL Weekend Update Thursday departs. At that point, 30 Rock will open its new season, leading into Leno.

Law & Order, which has been renewed for a 20th season (tying Gunsmoke as the longest running scripted drama in the history of television), will relocate to 8 p.m. Friday, followed by sophomore Southland and, again, the Leno talker. A Saturday edition of Dateline will anchor the HUT-challenged evening, followed by repeats of Trauma and Law & Order: SVU from 9-11 p.m. this fall (and Southland and SVU in midseason). Aforementioned Sunday Night Football will cap off the week, and will be replaced by the rotation of Dateline, new non-scripted entry The Marriage Ref and another two-hour edition of Celebrity Apprentice in midseason.

Also on NBC in midseason is the return of Chuck Mondays at 8 p.m. (in place of Heroes, which has a limited number of new episodes ordered), followed by new sci-fi drama Day One at 9 p.m. Mercy, a new medical drama, will air Wednesdays at 8 p.m. in place of Parenthood. Expected to join the NBC roster later in the season are new non-scripted entries Breakthrough With Tony Robbins and Who Do You Think You Are?

Not returning on NBC next season is My Name is Earl (which was not picked up by Fox as rumored), Medium (which could end up on CBS out of Ghost Whisperer on Friday), sophomore drama life and the recently introduced Howie Do It and The Chopping Block.

"NBC has picked up more scripted shows than last season even with The Jay Leno Show at 10 p.m.," said Ben Silverman, Co-Chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios. "We're incredibly excited about our new and returning series and have more comedy programming than anyone else, as well as two of the most buzzed about new shows, Community and Parenthood."

"We are extremely proud to introduce these strong new series to NBC's schedule next season in strategic timeslots that position them for success," said Angela Bromstad, President, Primetime Entertainment, NBC and Universal Media Studios. "They join some of the highest quality returning shows on television, which will serve as a strong foundation to the new schedule.

Pisher look Nathan Fillion is twittering just for you

I can't remember the last time I had a second season of ANYTHING. I don't know if I remember what to do. Step one: go to Canada. Relax.

Step two: See Star Trek a second time. Check.

Good finale for OTH. Not so much for GG, but the demos will explain all.

Its clear that Rules is no stronger than Christine or Gary.

24 did about as well as expected.

The rest of the CBS lineup did around the usual numbers even minus BBT.

ABC's the Bachelorette proves that not every edition will be a monster hit.

NBC was wise to cancel Medium. If it can't pull a 2.0 on Mondays, it likely won't on Fridays. CBS however, has a better time slot for it. Stay tuned there.

Kudos to HIMYM for building on RoE and keeping 142%!!! of RoE's audience. 24 didn't do to well without House and Medium will probably do better after Ghost Whisperer on CBS.

Before Twins gets a word out, I'd like to congratulate HIMYM on an amazing season, ratings wise, and content wise. For those upset about last week's episode not having any meaning, the finale came through to show us why bumping into Stella was so important. Tony gets Ted the teaching job, and that's where he meets the mother. As for Barney and Robin last night, I think it was played out in the best way possible.

I know Twins will argue this, but HIMYM held up it's audience without a big lead-in, proving my point last week that it has a strong core of followers, people that don't just tune in because it's something to watch between BBT and Men. Sure, House was off for the hour, but look at how much higher DWTS performed in the 8PM hour. Job well done HIMYM, can't wait for next season.

That's because you've never had a complete FIRST season of anything, Nathan. So this time you will--your first and only season concludes next year. Razzer

I know that the CW is after the 18-34 female demo in which the Monday shows excel, but seeing GoGi's and OTH's numbers, SPN's 2.88 mil. and 1.3/3 18-49 demo doesn't make me feel so bad anymore.

Also, Heroes at 8pm? House will slaughter it!

HIMYM can handle things on its own just fine. CBS would be wise to consider a Wed. 8pm with HIMYM included in it, but I'm not sure they will. I don't think they have a lot of faith in their new comedy(s) and that Christine and the new Elfman comedy will air on Wednesdays. Now just hoping for a 13 episode pickup for Gary!

HIMYM is a hit in its own right, though not a huge one. It couldn't be improving on BBT in the demo week after week without having a large devoted audience of its own, many of whom don't watch BBT at all.

It would have done much better last night if the last few eps hadn't been so far below-par. Hopefully with Hannigan & Smulders back fulltime next season, the show can get back to top form. And they can nurse between takes. Thanks to the heroic groundwork done by Lynn Redgrave on House Calls. I love referencing TV history. Smiler

I am glad to see I have become such a powerful force here that you always seem to have me on your mind. Just the way I like it.

As to HIMYM I think its numbers were decent last night. Nothing great, nothing terrible. With House out of the time slot and it being the season finale. I would expect it to be over 10 million. However, if it had its usual great lead in HIMYM would have probably been doing at 9.5 million and over a 4 demo. Really too bad ROE dragged it down some. Considering BBT did 9.75 million last week with House in the time slot I am sure it would have been well over 10 million this week which would have helped HIMYM. HIMYM did had a great season even though it dipped in the second half.

Wow! HIMYM was up with a lower lead in? Say it ain't so! BBT has really grown if Rules was only down 4% year to year. Rules was up 2% at 9:30. That's positive, but Men was up 8%. Miami a big loser year to year as is Gossip Girl and Tree Hill. DWTS remains consistent. Can it do it with another Dancing show on in the fall?
