Yeah I am really surprised about CBS and Sunday.

TAR again hits over 3.0 without a sports overrun (for those who think it only has happened a handful of times since they moved to Sunday, see last week's Sunday thread for a breakdown).

And it hits a viewer high (based on Fast Nationals), hopefully this will continue the trend of always scoring higher in finals for viewers and demos that has happened every episode this season. As I would love to see it go to another viewer high, and push to a 3.3 in the demo.

And yeah, while I haven't watched Cold Case in a long, long time, last year it was managing a 2.4-2.8 in the demo and that is a hell of a lot better then Three Rivers. Even with a typical seasons decline it should still get over a 2.0 (which damn thats sad).

And while on this subject, why the hell has CBS still not increased TAR back to 13 full episodes a cycle. It simply doesn't make sense to me.

Fox orders 'Idol'-style cooking show with Gordon Ramsay

quote:
oodies, get ready for a culinary “American Idol.”

Fox is expanding its line of Gordon Ramsay reality shows by giving a series order to Reveille’s “MasterChef.”

Ramsay will co-produce and star in the program, in which nonprofessional cooks compete to create perfect dishes. The project is based on a Shine TV format that’s popular in the U.K. and Australia. The show joins Ramsay’s other titles on Fox — “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Kitchen Nightmares” — and should keep
Fox stocked with the temperamental chef’s reality fare nearly year-around.

“A huge reality format that works great in other countries plus Gordon Ramsay guarantees success,” Fox president of alternative Mike Darnell said. “Gordon is like our ‘CSI.’ ” Big Grin

The “MasterChef” format has aired in several incarnations in the U.K., with the earliest dating to 1990. The Australian edition premiered this year and has been a ratings powerhouse, its finale ranking as one of the country’s most-watched programs in a decade.

“This is a huge, nationwide search for the best amateur cook in America,” said executive producer Howard T. Owens of Reveille. “It’s about people who are lawyers, construction workers and stay-at-home moms but whose real passion is to make great food. This is their shot to prove they have what it takes.”

The details for Fox’s “MasterChef” are being worked out, but the show will most closely resemble the Australian edition. In each season, contestants from around the country audition by creating a dish for a panel of three judges to earn spots as semi-finalists. The remaining contestants compete each week via team-based and individual cooking challenges until only one remains.

“Hell’s Kitchen’ is about finding a head chef that can work in a restaurant,” Darnell said. “This is about creating the perfect dish, and the contestants can be plucked from anywhere.”

Fox is ordering relatively few episodes (between 12 and 15) compared to the Australia edition, which was stripped six nights a week. The U.S. format and Ramsay's on-camera role are expected to fine-tuned over the coming weeks.

Scheduling has yet to be determined. One possible scenario is Fox will air a late spring edition of “Hell’s Kitchen” that will bleed into the summer and then, out of “Kitchen,” unveil “MasterChef.”

“Hell’s Kitchen” is the network’s second-most-popular reality series after “American Idol,” yet it’s more versatile than the singing competition — Fox has aired “Hell’s” all over its schedule and at different times of the year, and the show always performs competitively. Fox’s “Kitchen Nightmares” has been a more modest performer and is expected to return sometime next year. Fox also has a live cooking special coming up with Ramsay in December called “Cook Along.”

“Because we’ve had such success with cooking reality, we’re the best place to make this into a big show,” Darnell said.

Shine International will handle international distribution for the format, which was originally produced by Shine TV. Owens, Mark Koops and Elisabeth Murdoch will exec produce for Shine Reveille. Ramsay, Ben Adler and Pat Llewellyn are exec producers for Ramsay’s One Potato Two Potato

Seriously . . . FOX is becoming Food Network 2, lol. This latest series doesn't even sound to good, especially when Hell's Kitchen is one of my favorite shows. One positive mention in this article - the return of Kitchen Nightmares. Hopefully this isn't just wishful thinking, but maybe FOX hasn't abandoned this series altogether. Why they aren't currently airing it on Fridays is beyond me. Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to his live cooking special - even with the tape delay, who's to know what will "slip" out Wink

asterchef is a huge success worldwide and if it clicks then FOX have a show that they can utilise during fall season. The only problem is with Top Chef already established on Bravo, viewers will see this as a copycat show.

I like Gordon but he's not suitable for this show and FOX are making him work for his supper, no pun intended, he's already hinted that Kitchen Nightmares is likely to end as he's tired of it. Cookalong sounds good for a one-off but not a series.

The Masterchef format is usually stripped across five half hour episodes so it will be interesting how it adapted.

I don't care if the Phils win tonight, they don't have enough starting pitching. However, there'd been nothing better than seeing the Phils take this to seven and trying to beat Greedy CC in Game 7.
Funny you mention the big market issue when the Yankees are involved in the World Series. Yet, they didn't even make the playoffs last year with basically the same team, while the low-market Tampa Bay Rays defeated the mighty Boston Red Sox to get into the 2008 World Series. And before them, the Colorado Rockies made it to the Series as the 2007 National League Champions.

From the late 90s until earlier this decade, the Baltimore Orioles had one of the largest payrolls in baseball. Yet didn't even have a single appearance in a World Series at that time.

Actually, I think MLB owners LIKE the fact there are haves and have-nots within the sport. They want to see teams like the Yankees, Cubs and Red Sox to keep appearing in the World Series. Doesn't make it right for fans of the Royals, Pirates or Reds though but when FOX gets its best postseason ratings in 5 years with such big market teams, it's more difficult for these owners, the league or the networks to side with financial parity.

Expect this separation to occur in the NFL when the salary cap goes bye-bye for the 2010 season. Perhaps it may go into 2011 and onward unless the players and owners of the league have a collective bargaining agreement.

Back to baseball, convenient to bring up the money issue when there's an easier argument you and mushu_jj can make: you just hate the Yankees at all costs.

The highest rated TV sport - and the one with little or no decline - is the NFL. That sport has the most parity.

The same teams - for the most part get into the playoffs. It shouldn't be about TV ratings. It should be about being fair to the fans of the small market teams.

Just like Yankee fans, those people (many who make a lot less money) are being priced out of taking their families to games.

CC Sabathia is a greedy jerk. The offer the Brewers made him was more than acceptable. I don't hate the Yankees per say any more than the Mets, Cubs, or Red Sox (actually I hate the Cubs more).

Maybe MLB should just shut down the league and let the Yankees-Red Sox-Dodgers-Angels-Phillies-Cubs-Cardinals and a handful of others play.

Baseball is dying with kids, because parents can't afford to take their kids to the games.

Kathy Griffin Signs on to Host ABC's New Dance Show

ABC is getting ready to dance-- this time with Kathy Griffin.

The comic/reality show star has signed on to host "Let's Dance," a new reality competition series in which celebrities re-enact famous dance routines from pop culture. According to the network's website, the series will debut Monday, Nov. 23 at 9:30, immediately following the performance finale of "Dancing with the Stars."

ABC has ordered five episodes of "Dance," which lets contestants choose their favorite celebrity routines. The top finishers return for a grand finale in December.

The network's website doesn't list a regular timeslot for "Let's Dance." TheWrap has emailed ABC asking for details.

'Doctor Who' star lands 'Rex' pilot David Tennant will play a top Chicago litigator

quote:
No longer will American TV audiences be asking Doctor Who?

Popular British actor David Tennant, best known for playing the title role in the BBC's long-running sci-fi series "Doctor Who," is set to make his American television debut as the title character in NBC's hourlong pilot "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer."

Written by Andrew Leeds and David Lampson, "Rex" centers on Rex Alexander (Tennant), a top Chicago litigator who begins suffering panic attacks and takes up coaching clients to represent themselves in court.

David Semel, who directed the pilots for "Heroes" and "Life," has come on board to helm the comedic legal drama from Universal Media Studios and BermanBraun.

He will also executive produce with veteran Barry Schindel (who is attached as showrunner), Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein. Leeds and Lampson serve as supervising producers.

NBC greenlighted the project in August, about two years after it was first developed, and had been trying to find a lead actor for several months until Tennant came along and nailed the part.

Tennant, a theater and TV actor, rose to fame playing the mysterious alien time-traveler at the center of "Doctor Who" for the past five years. His performance as the Doctor has been often rated as the top in the franchise's 46-year history.

Tennant's casting is reminiscent of the tapping of another established British TV actor with virtually no American TV experience, Hugh Laurie, as the lead on Fox's medical drama "House."

Tennant, who co-starred in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," recently signed with UTA. He's also repped by U.K.'s Independent Talent Group.

I think FOX is getting very close to overdoing it with Gordon Ramsey. There's a point where people are going to get tired of his shows if overexposed.

Kitchen Nightmares would definately do better than what they originally scheduled for Fridays and it will probably end up on Fridays since FOX really has no where else to put it.

Kathy Griffin is great, but like the NBC project, I'm not sold on the concept. It will definately depend on who they cast as the celebrities. ABC is doing the right thing by making it a limited series.

But it's the TV ratings that drive the revenue for a sport. Higher the ratings, the better the sport benefits. Yes, it's so unfair for the fans of teams like the Royals, but recent World Series proved that viewers don't want to see small market nor regularly-appearing teams in it like the Astros, Tigers, Rockies and Rays. Parity may be good for the sport from a purist standpoint but not for television. And you will never see a salary cap in baseball until the MLB players union loses all its power. But even a salary cap doesn't solve all issues with parity - take a look at the NBA, where only a handful of teams each year have a chance at winning the NBA title.

And how about the Hollywood bigwigs who'd rather leave Dodger Stadium in the 6th inning to avoid traffic on the L.A. freeways?

You're definitely not alone in this sentiment. Yet, most of these teams are the ones with the bigger fan bases and they drive the ratings high.

Something tells me you'll still watch baseball once 2010 arrives. And then on!

Ok. Go to an arena right now and try to buy tickets for a family of four for either a single NHL, NBA or NFL game. Then, get back to me if you still think baseball is such a sport one cannot "afford", in comparison.

This could be the perfect show to fill in the DWTS gap until The Bachelor returns. I'm predicting it to do similar ratings to what Dance War did a couple years ago, which would be around 9 million. If scheduled right, and for comforting holiday filler, that would be fantastic. Kathy Griffin could also be a draw to the show - seems like an odd choice of host, but I like her, so I might give it a try.

My instinct is telling me we'll see Lie to Me end up on Fridays, with possibly one of the new dramas. What they should do is air Kitchen Nightmares immediately in January Fridays at 8pm, airing with the final episodes of Dollhouse and the return of Lie to me (Fridays at 9pm). With 10 episodes in the can, that would take them to March. One of the new dramas, like Past Life, could move to Fridays at 8pm once Kitchen Nightmares ends, after getting an Idol-boost for a few episodes. Then, Glee could return airing post-Idol in March. Sounds logical enough for me.
