Greys Anatomy often has similar viewer numbers and well into the 5's for demos. That's how older skewing it is. Plus, you know the night is older skewing overall when a 3.5 in the highest rated program in the demo. You can be certain that Private Practice probably beat it and fairly handily in the 18-34 crowd. CBS programs get their 18-49 strength off of the 35+ viewers, which is fine, but just continues to prove the point that the network is older skewing, because it brings in virtually no 18-34 audience.

Private Practice original ep that could air on Thursday is wasted again. Barbara saves the evening and probably sweeps. Its not that hard. The Polar Express would've been an easy fix for last night into the news special. Then they could've found a pair of other holiday movies for tonight and Friday.
They have to air 3 episodes of PP to synchronize it with GA. So both shows return January 8th with the 11th episode, and they can synchronize crossover is possible. When they announced the crossover PP was already shooting 2.14. The alternative would have been airing it tomorrow after a GA repeat? PP was pretty great last night. To bad many missed the best episode of the season.
That is an easy fix. They could easily have brought it back next week with a 2 hour episode at 9. DSM isn't coming back anyway. They can burn off those eps with Pushing Daisies later in December/early January.

They shouldn't be doing a crossover yet to begin with, it makes the network and PP look desperate for GA's watchers instead it should be trying to make the show it's own.

Ok, CBS shows are older skewing, we get it, still doesn't change the fact that a 3.5 is a demo number a lot of shows can't get close to this season and if Criminal Minds, NCIS and The Mentalist need over 15 million total viewers to get these demo numbers, what's so wrong with that? Are advertisers now prefering to reach 2 million 18-49 years olds via Chuck or Pushing Daisies than have 4 million on CBS, because they actively do not want those icky 50+ year old eyeballs on their spots?
Despite being Thanksgiving eve, a fairly typical Wednesday night.
CBS continued its dominance by winning the 9:00 and 10:00 time slots - in both total viewers and the adults 18-49 year old demographic. Earlier, the comedy duo finished second behind Fox's Thursday bound "Bones" at 8:00 p.m. (also placing second in the demos for the hour).
ABC, predictably, was off the map. Now we know why the ax was swung on "Pushing Daisies" and the night gets a total makeover in January. You know your night is awful when a hastily scheduled Barbara Walters interview (granted, with the next President of the United States) is able to double the audience of your next highest rated series - a spin-off of once red-hot series, to boot. Overall, "Daisies" earned its recent cancellation by being the lowest rated series on the night (save for the CW).
NBC had a below average night with no series able to break the 7 million viewer ceiling. "Law & Order", rushed into service this season, was more than a million viewers off from its numbers last week. Even the once dominant "Deal or No Deal" was no big deal last night, maybe that is why it will be off the schedule completely come January. While "Rosie Live" may have been a turkey last night, NBC may just be crazy enough to order a limited run (say, six week) series from the former talk show host. If ordered to series, NBC should revamp the series and make it more like "The Carol Burnett Show" (which was before my time) and less Rosie simply standing on stage attempting to banter with in-house guests meant to promote their NBC series. Perhaps NBC is readying a Sunday spot for Rosie - after all the network hasn't given us any word on its post-Super Bowl plans for Sunday in February. Didn't Ed Sullivan have success on that night? Or, NBC could dump Rosie on Saturdays and say, "see, we have original programming on the night!"
Fox was a tale of two series last night. "Bones" continues to do well - which bodes well for its impending Thursday move; but "House" continues to pull in numbers reminiscent of the failed comedy duo "til Death" and "Do Not Disturb".
Lastly, the CW was on life support for the second night in a row averaging less than 1 million viewers. As I said last week, without "Top Model" in the mix, CW Wednesdays are going to be rough for the rest of the calendar year, and until "Model" returns.
1) Re: Rich Shows. How's Starter Wife doing? I would think we'd see the same ratings challenges (obviously it's cable so we have to look at the numbers appropriately) that LJ and DSM are having. If SW is doing poorly, I'm willing to concede that maybe the economic climate has something to do with it, but if SW is doing well then it doesn't hold much water.
2) Reality TV. Good analysis, WlcmLAPD, except you forgot sports (which, except for WWE, is typically reality). So you need to add 3 hours to ABC's total (Saturday Night College Football) and 4 hours to NBC's total (Sunday night NFL). Yes, those end in a few weeks, but they are scripted show substitutes.
3) There is no third thing.
4) Really good Criminal Minds last night, except I was annoyed the bartender didn't summon a bouncer. That was pretty weak.
5) Bones was good, except they're reducing Booth. First few seasons, Booth is supposed to be this guy great at reading people in interrogations. Now he needs Sweets' help for when a mother is obviously protecting someone? Also, whatever happened to his disdain of the rich? Now he's considering a ritzy private school? Someone get the writers the previous seasons on DVDs for Christmas, please.
6) That said, no new eps until January?

Advantage, Miss O'Donnell.
dumont, until broadcast networks and cable networks are on equal footing in overall U.S. household coverage, you cannot compare the ratings of the two programs.
Considering that Miss O'Donnell's program was highly hyped on NBC, her special was an utter disappointment.

No, but I bet they're more than willing to give Mr. Jeff Dunham and Mr. Stephen Colbert another Christmas special.

Thanks to Mr. Silverman for broadcasting the pilot of 'Rosie Live' and giving the show a good beta test. This edgy variety series (who else will Miss O'Donnell welcome through that door on stage?) just might work for the network on Saturday nights at 10 pm, to help build pre-tune-in of the A18-49s for 'Saturday Night Live'.
Folks, I believe dumont is a little confused about the holiday calendar. Today happens to be Thanksgiving, not April Fool's Day!
dumont, I challenge you to view Mr. Colbert's Comedy Central special and I will look forward to your analysis. The next two repeat airings are tonight at 11:30pm eastern and Friday, November 28 at 3:00pm eastern.

Maybe it's the holiday that has brought out the best in pisher. I actually gave a good chuckle at this post. And a Happy Thanksgiving to you, pisher! For point #2, though, I didn't know you'd be so cruel about your favorite show!

SPOILER ALERT {highlight the text following this}: But if the writers followed your obviously rational logistics, then she wouldn't have been kidnapped, Reid wouldn't be able to save her, and those 2 couldn't hook up at the end... all within the span of 10 minutes of airtime to close the show! (I do agree with you, ChrTh.) Also, for the entire episode, I couldn't help but think the "Criminal Minds" writers were very much inspired by VH1's "The Pick-Up Artist."
TV ratings data for the Academy Awards since 1953 now online! Check them out now!
PD and PP both were lower. PP didn't even pull a 2 in the demo
Thanksgiving Eve is considered a party night and a travel night. All the families were traveling (the ones that usually watch PD) and the women were out in the clubs with their girl freinds (the ones that usually watch PP)
Other...good numbers for Criminal Minds Bye bye Rosie. Obviously nobody wants to watch you anymore.
That's why Barbara Walters doubled in PP's viewers and gained on the demo up to 3.1?
ABC were chumps to renew this show.
Well of course the Barbara Walters special numbers were good. Anything Obama goes on the ratings spike. (Ex: 60 Minutes, The O'Reilly Factor, etc)

I thought it was a terrible time slot, I think they should have just gone with airing on Thanksgiving day instead of when everyone is travelling for the holiday.

I'm not disagreeing with you here but those ABC shows, particularly PP, does very well with an even harder to reach demo, 18-34, which helps keep the lower rated PP on the air. I will say, however, that shows like NCIS, CM, and others don't have any problems getting advertisers and they shouldn't either.

The reason Tueaday and wednesday were bad is beacause they aired a movie and it was up against heavy competition and stylista which is just bad even with Top model support. and my guess is that they are gonna program wednesday with 13 and reaper, and i know reapers gna do good who knows about 13 though.

Carol's last attempt into the genre didn't go very well, so I don't think she would want to do it nor would a network.
No, the genre needs a fresh, good Lead talent and a strong ensamble to support them.
Actually, Blue Color TV (On the WB) was the best attempt at this in the past decade, or two. It had the Carol Burnet Show feel to it.
