-Ratings Breakdown:
Ignited by summer favorite So You Think You Can Dance, the ultimate in TV dance competitions, Fox led this typical summer Wednesday in both total viewers and adults 18-49. NBC was second in both categories, followed by CBS, ABC and the CW.

The 90-minute installment of So You Think You Can Dance averaged 8.20 million viewers and a 3.0 rating/10 share among adults 18-49, building by half-hour as follows:

8:00 p.m. Viewers: 7.54 million, A18-49: 2.9/10
8:30 p.m. Viewers: 8.12 million, A18-49: 2.9/ 9
9:00 p.m. Viewers: 8.93 million, A18-49: 3.3/10

While So You Think You Can Dance, like CBS’ Big Brother, is down year-to-year, it is still considered a respectable summer option.

Also on Fox was game show Don’t Forget the Lyrics, with 7.79 million viewers (#1) and a 3.0/ 8 among adults 18-49 (#1t) at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, retention out of the last half hour of So You Think You Can Dance was a solid 95 percent in total viewers and 91 percent in the demo. Which show do you prefer: Don’t Forget the Lyrics or NBC’s similar The Singing Bee?

CBS opened the evening with 5.00 million viewers (#3) and a 1.8/ 6 among adults 18-49 (#3) for the one-hour King of Queens series-ender from 8-9 p.m. Too bad the finale did not match the overall quality of the sitcom. That led into a repeat of Criminal Minds (Viewers:#2, 6.80 million; A18-49: #2, 1.8/ 5), which we all know will not be negatively impacted next season by the departure of Mandy Patinkin, followed by a repeat of CSI: NY (Viewers: #1, 8.22 million; A18-49: #2, 2,.1/ 6) from 9-11 p.m. NBC was on par with recent midweek summer levels as a result of a one-hour repeat of Most Outrageous Moments (Viewers: #2, 6.41 million; A18-49: #2, 2.1/ 7), Last Comic Standing 5 (Viewers: #2, 6.83 million; A18-49: #2, 2.9/ 8) and Dateline (Viewers: #2, 7.21 million; A18-49: #2, 2.8/ 8).

ABC, meanwhile, was almost off the Wednesday map with its combination of two repeat episodes of According to Jim (Viewers: #4, avg. 4.33 million; A18-49: #4, avg. 1.4/ 5 from 8-9 p.m.), the season (or series) finale of American Inventor (Viewers: #4, 5.29 million; A18-49: #4, 1.7/ 5), and the return of canceled drama The Nine (Viewers: #3, 3.25 million; A18-49: #3, 1.2/ 3). Given the losses from one year earlier, chances are we won’t bee seeing a third-season of American Inventor. As for According to Jim, why ABC? Why are we seeing 18 additional seasons for a sitcom that should have been canceled last year?

Last, and very least, were two repeat episodes of America’s Next Top Model on the CW at 1.60 million viewers and a 0.7/ 2 among adults 18-49.

I habitually watch neither, but The Singing Bee is brighter and a bit more cheesy, in a good way. It doesn't take itself as seriously.

I'm surprised ratings were even this high. The episode was actually really good. It seems like the writers realized the frustration of the viewers and went the more traditional show-what-happened-while-the-character-describes -it-route. I can't see how they expected it to sustain over seasons and seasons. But nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised.

Does anyone know what Nigel was talking about when he said Mary Murphy was going through something? I'm curious.

FOX Wins A18-49 in July Sweep, and NBC Places Second; CBS Retains Household Crown

With its strong reality programming schedule, FOX once again has won the A18-49 demo crown by a comfortable margin of victory. Although CBS and NBC were tied in A18-49 through much of the July Sweep, NBC edged out CBS for second place. ABC was fourth, The CW fifth and MNT (based on 25 days numbers) was sixth. (If the Spanish-language network Univision is included, its 1.4 A18-49 average would have placed it in fifth place, ahead of The CW and MNT).

4 Weeks 2007 July Sweep A18-49 vs 4 Weeks 2006 July Sweep A18-49
(results weighted for extra hour on Sundays)

# 1 FOX 2.2 vs 2.3 (-4%) 19 nightly wins vs. 12nightly wins

#2 NBC 1.8 vs. 2.0 (-15%) 5 wins vs. 6 wins

#3 CBS 1.7 vs. 2.0 (-15%) 1 win vs. 9 wins

6 Network Totals 8.3 vs. 9.4 (-12%) 29 wins (1 tie) vs. 33 wins (5 ties)

In households, CBS is once again the clear winner, with NBC and FOX deadlocked in second place.

I definitely like the Wayne Brady singing show better than the Joey Fatone show. Wayne Brady is a natural at what he does. Joey Fatone, on the other hand, is...um...not.

Does anyone know what's happening with 'Las Vegas'? I had heard sometime back that Tom Selleck might be joining the cast next season to replace James Caan -- but I haven't heard anything definitive.

I can only speculate that she has an ill or recently deceased relative. That's what I gathered from his comments.

This is the first season I've watched SYTYCD and I've been blown away by the talent (not only the dancing, but the choreography as well). This is great entertainment and deserves an even bigger audience. The dancing puts DWTS to shame and the talent is deep, unlike AI. I'm just blown away week by week!

strum, the official Tom Selleck announcement: http://www.thefutoncritic.com/news.aspx?id=20070509nbc01

I thought The Nine had a chance to go sub-1 in the demo, so I guess its return can't be considered a total disaster.

Geena Davis' name was mentioned early on. She apparently roomed with CBS head Nina Tassler in college.

Based on the episodes for which I have travisyanan's numbers:

Kyle XY
-ABC Family originals: 1.0HH/2%, 0.48 A18-49, 1.618m viewers (6 airings)
-ABC encores: 2.0HH/4%, 0.85 A18-49, 2.828m viewers (4 airings)

Greek
-ABC Family originals: 0.8HH/1%, 0.38 A18-49, 1.079m viewers (4 airings)
-ABC encores: 1.7HH/3%, 0.93 A18-49, 2.338M VIEWERS (3 airings)

While Kyle XY pulled a half million more viewers in its ABC Friday encore, Greek is doing slightly better in A18-49.

I miss the Kyle XY re-broadcasts on ABC. The series was going in an interesting direction in SEason 2.
