Is the LA Times writer correct in saying Lopez was the first Latino to headline a TV show? Way back in the last century, I seem to recall a horrid little thing called "Chico and the Man."

Plus there was a short lived show in the 80's (Staring Paul Rodriguez) called "aka Pablo". IIRC, it was about a Latino family & was produced by Norman Lear.

You're right x. It was successful in season one, two, and even three in terms of retention and growth in the demo. In three it outrated lead in My Wife and Kids by a long shot. Last season its numbers were very good until Idol came along and even then it outrated everything that Idol faced. Even this season I believe it was the number one comedy, at least until the move to Tuesday.

No, that's not correct. It did fine at the beginning and then the numbers did go down the last 2 years. If it was that low rated for 5 1/2 years, ABC would have canned it long ago.

I thought part of the reason it moved around was because it never did well anywhere the network put it. They gave it a golden slot where LOST beat up the competition, and it had nothing to show for it. And I think the Friday slot was consolation for the network not doing well on that night anyway, so it could afford LOPEZ's bad ratings. But I think the schedulings were meant to find an audience for the show. Otherwise, the network would be justified for dumping the show years ago. Same with Jim. Both shows were lucky to be on this long.

Well I knew this was coming. Truth of the matter is that GLo was miles funnier than anything else on ABC this year, save for maybe the Knights of Prosperity, which it outrated. I don't like that he's pulling the race card, but the fact that his show is produced by Warner Bros. is the real reason. ABC would rather reap the benefits of another year of horrid According to Jim and George was right in pointing out ABC's brutal treatment. 4 Timeslots in 5 seasons! Almost as bad as Bernie Mac. Lets relive them all: Wed. at 8:30, Friday at 8:00, Tuesday at 8:30, Wednesday at 8:00, and Tuesday at 8:00. At least his show went out at the top of its game, unlike Jim which was funny for about 1/2 season.

TV just got a lot 'whiter,' says a canceled George Lopez

George Lopez, the first Latino to lead a television series successfully, isn't laughing. "TV just became really, really white again," he said.

ABC, he said, has "unceremoniously" canceled his self-titled comedy, which over the years chronicled his personal life from his sad childhood growing up with an abusive grandmother, to his alcoholism and kidney transplant.

"The George Lopez Show" will live on in syndication, but that's not making Lopez feel better about not getting the chance to tell one final season of stories. Lopez said Steve McPherson, ABC president of prime-time entertainment, called him over the weekend to explain that "financially" it wasn't working out, that the network would lose money if it picked up the show again.

Chico & the Man was big until Freddy Prinze killed himself. After that, they tried to continue the show, but it lost its edge, and star.

AKA Pablo, IIRC, was a very hyped show, but busted quickly. I think I may have seen the pilot, but that was 20+ years ago.

While not the first show, Greetings From Tuscon was one of my favorites. Granted the wife was white, but everyone else was hispanic on the show. The daughter on that moved to GLo the last 2 years and the Mother moved on to DH season 1 as Carlos' mother. I liked that show a lot and was surprised it didn't do that well. You can still catch the show on HDNet occasionally.

What about Condo? It lasted a few months on abc back in the 80's and featured some Latins in the cast.

Well, we're talking about shows with a Latino as the principal lead--is GLO the first network show with a primarily Latino cast, AND a central character who is Latino?

If we're going to talk about any network show with Latino characters of importance, let's not forget Gregory Sierra's Detective Sergeant Chano Amenguale, from Barney Miller--of course, he left the show after only 35 eps, but he had some great moments while he was there.

Psst! Marc! Just read your latest PI column. Is there really going to be an ABC show called "Dirty Sexy Monkey"?

Is it about Bonobos?

If you ever have a chance to catch it on HDNet, do so, it had some funny characters / good actors on it. I was shocked to see something that good on the WB.

AKA Pablo was an latino cast.

But bringing up Gregory Sierra reminded me that He had a comedy, with him as the lead, right after Barney Miller were he was a doctor in a hospital. IIRC it had the feel of "Barney Miller in a Hospital Setting"

I had to look it up, but it was A.E.S. Hudson Street.

No, a great show to match up with Caveman would have been What About Brian--but that's canceled. Aw. It would have been perfect synergy.

Big Grin

Dirty Sexy Monkey would be perfect. Just cast Matt LeBlanc in the lead and you have another Hit... Just like Friends... er... well, um... Joey.
