Prime-Time Ratings:
Friday 3/07/08

The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 8.08 million, NBC: 7.31, Fox: 6.94, ABC: 5.42, CW: 5.04

-Adults 18-49:
NBC: 2.2 rating/7 share, CBS: 2.1/ 6, Fox: 2.0/ 6, ABC: 1.6/ 5, CW: 1.5/ 4

----------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 9 percent in early 2006-07 to approximately 20 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Friday’s Winners:
The Price is Right (CBS)

-Friday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats):
Amnesia (NBC) and, sadly, the night overall

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a Friday of split leadership, with CBS the most-watched network and NBC inching past the Eye net for first among key adults 18-49. Fox finished third in both categories, followed by ABC and the CW. In the battle of the 8-9 p.m. game shows, there was one clear winner: CBS’ The Price is Right, which crowned another one million dollar contestant. The Price is Right scored a dominant 10.33 million viewers and a 2.5 rating/8 share among adults 18-49 versus a mere 4.73 million viewers (#4) and a 1.6/ 5 in the demo (#3) for week three of NBC’s Amnesia. You have to now wonder if CBS will leave The Price is Right in the Friday 8 p.m. anchor spot. Personally, I would ship Ghost Whisperer off to Wednesday at 8 p.m. and leave Drew Carey and company here next season.

Also airing in the Friday 8 p.m. hour was a repeat of Fox’s Bones (Viewers: #2, 6.67 million; A18-49: #2, 1.7/ 5), the first half of the CW’s departing Friday Night Smackdown! (Viewers: #3, 4.87 million; A18-49: #4, 1.4/ 5), and a repeat of Grey’s Anatomy on ABC (Viewers: #5, 3.98 million; A18-49: #5, 1.1/ 3). Overall, Friday Night Smackdown! scored an above average 5.04 million viewers and a 1.5/ 4 in the demo from 8-10 p.m. Yes, upcoming home MyNetworkTV will clearly benefit next season.

From 9-10 p.m., the first half of a two-hour edition of NBC’s Dateline was No. 1 in total viewers, while a repeat of Fox’s House dominated among adults 18-49. Take a look:

Friday 9 p.m.
Dateline (NBC)
Viewers: 7.78 million (#1), A18-49: 2.2/ 6 (#2)

House R (Fox)
Viewers: 7.21 million (#2), A18-49: 2.3/ 7 (#1)

Also airing in the 9 p.m. hour was a repeat of CBS’ Ghost Whisperer (Viewers: #3, 6.83 million; A18-49: #3, 1.9/ 5), the first half of two-hour edition of ABC’s 20/20 (Viewers: #4, 5.50 million; A18-49: #4, 1.7/ 5), and the second half of Friday Night Smackdown! on the CW (Viewers: #5, 5.21 million; A18-49: #5, 1.5/ 4).

First at 10 p.m. was the second hour of NBC’s expanded Dateline at 9.42 million viewers and a 2.9/ 9 among adults 18-49. Tied for the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively, was a repeat of CBS’ Numb3rs (Viewers: #2, 7.09 million; A18-49: #3, 1.8/ 5) and the second half of ABC’s expanded 20/20 (Viewers: #3, 6.78 million; A18-49: #2, 1.9/ 6).

Time to do some overrating again! You can vote in the 2nd annual overrated-show bracket, entitled the Futile Four. The poll will reset about each week to match up "winners" of each weekly match but ultimately end on April 7 (coincidentally, the same night as the Men's NCAA National Basketball Championship on CBS.)

This week's poll closes on Wednesday, March 12 at 7:00pm eastern.

On a side note to TravisYanan, in your Sunday posts, please provide data for VH1's "Rock of Love 2", if possible. I notice from exmalibu's posts that it is the highest rated cable shows in 18-49 on Sundays. And, I may want to use "Rock of Love 2" in the next few weeks for PIFC Daily Game.

Friday
9 p.m. Dateline (NBC) Viewers: 7.78 million (#1), A18-49: 2.2/ 6 (#2)
10 p.m. Dateline (NBC): 9.42 million viewers, 2.9/ 9 among adults 18-49.

Those are great 10 p.m. numbers for Dateline, coming very close to breaking through the 3.0 demo threshold. NBC just needs to find a stronger 8 p.m. show (1 vs. 100?).

The CW is really going to miss those WWE Smackdown viewers and A18-49's which move over to MyNetworkTV this fall. If you take last nights Smackdown numbers, assume they migrate to MyNetworkTV fully and add them to MyNetworkTV's four-day average for this week, the standings would be:

MyNetworkTV: 2.362m viewers, 0.8 demo
The CW: 2.103m* viewers, 1.0 demo*

* The CW average assumes they will be able to replace Smackdown with Friday night programming that garners 2.1m viewers and 1.0 demo.

Price is Right is doing very strong on Friday nights. Hopefully CBS does this again next year.

Amen$ia should just be cancelled. You think NBC would be quick and renew 1 vs. 100.

Just wondering, how come Dateline wasnt a winner for the night?

The CW is doomed on Friday's without Smackdown, MyNetwork will do very well with Smackdown.

Price is Right is the real deal in primetime. Dateline and Smackdown performed very well as well.

And NBC will want to forget the very existence of Amne$ia.

I'd schedule TPIR as a midseason replacement to lead off either Wednesday or Friday.

It will be interesting to see next Friday if original eps of Jezebel James will improve on the numbers reruns of Bones have been putting up.

TPiR has what, 2 more airings left? One this Friday and the last on April 4th (After Basketball). CBS should get episodes oin the air to run through the end of May. 10 million on a friday night doesn't happen much any more, so they should do what they can to keep it there.

I think Amen$ia only has 1 more airing before it is gone forever.

The CW on Friday noghts will be interesting. Most of there targeted demographic is not home on that night, so they will need to come up with something new for those that ARE home.

Given the problems CBS has had with filling the 9p slot on Fridays, I'm curious if the Eye would consider going the game show route at 8p in the fall, and move Ghost Whisperer to 9p permanently.

I'm picturing some kind of a "wheel" format with TPiR, Power of 10 (if the show returns this summer and the ratings improve), Million Dollar Password (which just taped a few days ago) and Do You Trust Me (which has also taped).

I can't imagine TPiR agreeing to produce 20-25 primetime shows for next season, in addition to the 200 or so episodes that would be produced for daytimes. Rotating shows would be a better option, with TPiR held for sweeps.

I really enjoyed Here come the Newlyweds last night -- I agree with others that said it's actually more entertaining than Oprah's Big Give. I still think that Big Give will bring in the higher numbers, but I hope Newlyweds keeps a high demo. Last week it had just over 10 million viewers and a 4.1 in the demo. I think if it keeps 9 million and a 3.5 in the demo this week it'll be good, but I'm hoping for higher numbers, especially in the demo. And I think Oprah was actually better than week 1 as well -- less reliance to big corporate support, except for those 3 guys that teamed up. I expect the trio of EM:HE, OBG, and Newlyweds to drop by only 5% overall from last week.
