Prime-Time Ratings:
Thursday 7/24/08

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 7.78 million, CBS: 6.74, ABC: 4.06, NBC: 3.87, CW: 1.76

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 2.2 rating/8 share, CBS: 1.6/ 5, NBC: 1.5/ 5, ABC: 1.2/ 4, CW: 0.7/ 2

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Fox), So You Think You Can Dance (Fox)

-Respectable Thursday Start:
Flashpoint (CBS)

-Yesterday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats):
Last Comic Standing (NBC), Fear Itself (NBC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox led the lackluster Thursday troops with its non-scripted combination of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Viewers: #1, 7.28 million; A18-49: #1, 1.7 rating/ 6 share) and the live So You Think You Can Dance results show (Viewers: #1, 8.28 million; A18-49: #1, 2.7/ 9), which surprised the masses when Will departed with the expected Comfort last night. The name Comfort would be a great sounding daytime syndicated talk show, wouldn’t it?

Second overall was CBS’ combination of The Greatest American Dog (Viewers: #2, 6.07 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.5/ 6), which is like a four-legged edition of Survivor, a repeat of CSI (Viewers: #2, 7.43 million; A18-49: #3, 1.6/ 5), which is not the second-run force it once was, and the relocated Flashpoint (Viewers: #1, 6.73 million; A18-49: #1, 1.7/ 5). One week earlier, former 10 p.m. occupant Swingtown averaged 5.32 million viewers and a 1.6/ 5 among adults 18-49 (out of 8.82 million viewers and a 1.9/ 6 in the demo for the CSI encore). Comparably, Flashpoint was up by 1.41 million viewers and six percent among adults 18-49, with improved retention out of CSI. As for Greatest American Dog, if it is picked-up for a second season, why not feature former reality stars and their dogs? Sue Hawk…if you don’t already have a pooch go out and get one.

Finishing a distant third was ABC’s line-up of a repeat of Ugly Betty (Viewers: #4, 3.36 million; A18-49: #4, 0.8/ 3), a repeat of Grey’s Anatomy (Viewers: #4, 3.60 million; A18-49: #4, 1.1/ 4), and Hopkins (Viewers: #2, 5.22 million; A18-49: #2, 1.6/ 5), which managed to build out of the second half of the encore Grey’s Anatomy lead-in (Viewers: 3.81 million; A18-49: 1.2/ 4 at 9:30 p.m.) by 1.41 million viewers and 33 percent in the demo.

NBC sunk to its lowest-rated Thursday this summer to-date care of a two-hour edition of should-be-retired Last Comic Standing (Viewers: #3, 4.21 million; A18-49: #3, 1.7/ 6) and anthology Fear Itself (Viewers: #3, 3.21 million; A18-49: #3, 1.1/ 3). And cellar-dweller the CW -- repeats of Smallville (Viewers: 1.94 million; A18-49: 0.8/ 3) and Supernatural (Viewers: 1.57 million; A18-49: 0.6/ 2) -- has not done itself any favors by not introducing anything new this summer. The lower the ratings, the weaker the promotional platfom for the fall.

Not great, but not bad numbers for flashpoint.

Lets see how it does over the rest of the summer and when CSI's repeat numbers go up, will Flashpoint's? That may be the key for the series s maintaining a consistant level of retention out of CSI.

If thats the case then getting Animal Lovers Betty White and Bob Barker is a MUST!

The numbers for Flashpoint were pretty good. It held most of the viewers and demo. Now let's see if it can keep it up next week.

I'm no fan of stunt casting, even though CBS has done it many times on TAR and Survivor.

Given last week's numbers of CBS – Flashpoint
Viewers: 7.46 million (#1), A18-49: 1.6/ 6 (#1t) on Friday. I would have thought that Thursday would have been a larger improvement, but this is more evidence that the show is still on the decline and most likely will end up stabilizing around Swingtown's current numbers.

It's still up in the air how many people saw the Sunday rerun and stuck to that day.

Great American Dog is dead. Next week it will dip below 6 million which is not good.

Much better choice putting Flashpoint after CSI. It managed to keep some of the audience watching after CSI. As for Flashpoint declining, I don't think that will be the case and definately not to the lows of Swingtown. It seems to have found its rhythm and will stick in the high 6 million mid 1 demo range. Not good enough for a renewal, but respectable for a summer series.

Really good ratings increase for Hopkins again. It is renewal bound with gains like that.

I really don't understand why CW hasn't put on anything new for the summer. As Marc said, it is just killing the promotions for fall.

Flashpoint is already pretty much at Swingtown's low in the demo and Flashpoint has aired half as many episodes.

What ratings increase? Hopkins lost aboput 3/4million viewers from last week. Are you trying to prop it up because it was able to build on a Grey's Anatomy rerun? Pretty much anything can build in that timeslot right now. A double airing of According to Jim would probably build from a Grey's Anatomy rerun.

Agreed. They made the same mistake last year and never should have repeated it. They are talking next year about avoiding a summer shutdown by starting up their Fall season in July, but unfortunately, I think they are likely to also wrap up next spring in Early April as opposed to May sweeps. So, the effect is the same: too long a layoff with nothing new going on. A network, any network, cannot expect to promote their Fall shows if they put up a 'closed for the next few months' sign.

FLASHPOINT - I'm not going to get into predicting its ratings because I think there are still a few variables out there but will speak on the quality, having watched all 3 eps.

Ep 1 - 8/10
Ep 2 - 7/10
Ep 3 - 5/10

I hope that as they produced the subsequent eps some character development took place. It takes awhile to do that, and 3 eps isn't much.

But the content alone here is not enough to overcome a lack of one or two relatable characters, who have not emerged at this time.

In the last two eps they have almost counted on the guest characters to carry this ball. I don't think that will work over the long haul.

Ben Silverman might have an incurable case of foot-in-mouth disease, but his patience is awe-inspiring. It amazes me that this show is still airing after the audience it had last week. Especially considering the near total lack of quality. Reilly would have dumped it after 4 episodes, max.

I was a big fan of "Masters of Horror" -- even the bad episodes were better than a lot of horror anthology segs -- but Mick Garris misfired big time with this one. And since "MoH" was more than capable of producing horror episodes that qualified as actual horror, I can only conclude "Fear Itself" was a victim of peacock tampering. The 7 episodes that have aired to date have all been about as horrifying as your average episode of "Full House."

On second thought, scratch that. "Full House" is much more horrifying.

"Better Off Ted," Wednesdays at some time or another at some point or another in the near future. Because we can't all live in mansions and not ever work like the people on "Modern Family."

Hey folks...FYI. I will be on TV, Sunday at 9 p.m. ET talking about Lost on a G4 special. Hope you can tune in. From TV Guide:

Damon Lindelof remembers the day clearly. Not long after turning into ABC a 23-page outline for a show that would be called Lost, his phone rang, on a Sunday. It was Lloyd Braun, who at the time was the president of ABC Entertainment. "I'm going to greenlight this show," Braun said. Lindelof's immediate thought? "Oh, s--t!"

That story and many more reflections on the serialized phenomenon concerning castaways, Others and others are shared in Lost: A G4 Special, premiering Friday, July 25, at 10 pm/ET on the G4 cable network.

Among the Losties sharing their views on the series' secrets and theories are Matt Mitovich (that's me), Entertainment Weekly's Jeff "Doc" Jensen and MediaWeek's Marc Berman. If you get a chance, tune in and check it out. I'm sure it will be a lot of fun!
