NBC: 1.4 rating/5 share, CBS and CW: 1.3/ 5 each, Fox: 1.2/ 5, ABC: 1.1/ 4

-Friday’s Winners:
Nothing

-Friday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
Duel (ABC), 20/20 (ABC), Swingtown (CBS) and the night overall

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
NBC won this severely depressed summer Friday, with a first-place finish in households, total viewers and adults 18-49. But just 5.49 million viewers and a 1.4 rating/5 share in the demo, on average, is not necessarily “winning.” NBC opened the evening with back-to-back repeats of Most Outrageous Moments (Viewers: #3, avg. 4.32 million; A18-49: #4, avg. 1.1/ 5 from 8-9 p.m.), followed by a two-hour edition of Dateline at 6.07 million viewers and a 1.6/ 6 among adults 18-49 from 9-11 p.m. While Dateline may not sound like much, it did manage to build in every half hour. Take a look:

Dateline (NBC)
9:00 p.m. Viewers: 4.98 million (#2), A18-49: 1.2/ 5 (#4)
9:30 p.m. Viewers: 5.21 million (#2), A18-49: 1.4/ 5 (#1t)
10:00 p.m. Viewers: 6.71 million (#1), A18-49: 1.8/ 6 (#1)
10:30 p.m. Viewers: 7.36 million (#1), A18-49: 2.0/ 7 (#1)

In time period-premiere news, the “nail is in the coffin,” so to speak, for CBS drama Swingtown, which moved into the Friday 10 p.m. hour with just 4.50 million viewers (#3) and a 1.5/ 6 among adults 18-49 (#2). Earlier in the evening on CBS were repeats of Ghost Whisperer (Viewers: #1: 5.19 million; A18-49: #1t: 1.3/ 5) and Numb3rs (Viewers: #1: 6.02 million; A18-49: #2t: 1.3/ 5) from 8-10 p.m.

ABC had little of note with its combination of a repeat of America’s Funniest Home Videos (Viewers: #2: 4.79 million; A18-49: #1t, 1.3/ 5), the series-finale of Duel (Viewers: #5: 3.21 million; A18-49: #5: 0.9/ 3), and 20/20 (Viewers: #2: 4.66 million; A18-49: #3: 1.2/ 4). The CW was below average with soon-to-depart Friday Night Smackdown! at 3.79 million viewers (#4) and a 1.3/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#2t) from 8-10 p.m. And Fox was fourth overall in the demo and last in total viewers with a repeat of theatrical Anger Management (Viewers: #5: 3.19 million; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 5).

To whet your appetite for the fall, here is what you will be seeing on Fridays beginning in September:

ABC
8:00 p.m. Wife Swap (new day and time)
9:00 p.m. Supernanny (new day)
10:00 p.m. 20/20

CBS
8:00 p.m. Ghost Whisperer
9:00 p.m. The Ex List (new)
10:00 p.m. Numb3rs

NBC
8:00 p.m. Crusoe (new)
9:00 p.m. America’s Toughest Jobs (new)
10:00 p.m. Life (new day)

Fox
8:00 p.m. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (new day)
9:00 p.m. Don’t Forget the Lyrics (new day)

CW
8:00 p.m. Everybody Hates Chris (new day)
8:30 p.m. The Game (new day and time)
9:00 p.m. America’s Next Top Model (R, new day)

As bad as these numbers may be, it's worth noting that there is growth from the year ago evening for most of the nets, excluding The CW.

quote:

From Friday 7.27.07:

-Total Viewers:
CBS and NBC: 4.56 million each, CW: 4.33, ABC: 3.87, Fox: 2.95

-Adults 18-49:
CW: 1.4 rating/5 share, ABC: 1.3/ 5, NBC and Fox: 1.2/ 5 each, CBS: 1.1/ 4

---------------

-Ratings Breakdown:
After 16 days at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour in Los Angeles, it’s back to reality, and those abysmal summer prime time ratings. On that note, CBS and NBC tied for dominance in total viewers, while the CW’s perennial Friday Night Smackdown! was No. 1 among adults 18-49.

A repeat of CBS’ Ghost Whisperer was first in the 8-9 p.m. time period, with an average 5.10 million viewers and a 1.4 rating/6 share among adults 18-49. Also in the hour was a repeat of NBC’s 1 vs. 100 (Viewers: #2, 4.62 million; A18-49: #3, 1.2/ 5), the first half of the CW’s aforementioned Friday Night Smackdown! (Viewers: #2, 3.98 million; A18-49: #2, 1.3/ 5), and week two of ABC game show dud Set for Life (Viewers: #4, 3.72 million; A1-49: #4, 1.0/ 5). A repeat of theatrical Austin Powers on Fox averaged a mere 2.95 million viewers (#5) and a 1.2/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#3t) from 8-10 p.m.

The second half of the CW’s Friday Night Smackdown! dominated the 9 p.m. hour, with 4.68 million viewers and a 1.5/ 5 among adults 18-49. Overall, Smackdown! averaged 4.33 million viewers and a 1.4/ 5 in the demo from 8-10 p.m. Also present at 9 p.m. was a repeat of NBC’s Las Vegas (Viewers: #2, 4.04 million; A18-49: #3, 1.1/ 4), a repeat of CBS’ Jericho (Viewers: #3, 3.67 million; A18-49: #4, 1.0/ 3), the second half of the Austin Powers encore on Fox (Viewers: #4, 3.45 million), and a repeat of recently introduced ABC Family drama Greek (Viewers: #5, 2.08 million; A18-49: #5, 0.9/ 3).

ABC’s 20/20 (which moves to Friday at 8 p.m. this fall) won the 10 p.m. hour, with 5.82 million viewers and a 2.0/ 7 among adults 18-49. Second was a repeat of NBC’s Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Viewers: 5.03 million; A18-49: 1.4/ 5), followed by a repeat of CBS’ Numb3rs (Viewers: 4.91 million; A18-49: 1.2/ 4). I said this was boring, didn’t I?

Just trying to keep it positive Smiler

Swingtown is dead in this spot also. It isn't going to work anywhere and because of the move, they went from Flashpoint earning 7.12 million in the spot to Swingtown earning 4.50 million. A 2.5 million drop isn't good. They need to put repeats of Numbers there and call it a day.

I bet ABC is happy that Duel is over. Hopefully it is the series finale and it doesn't come back. I do wonder if Duel is tanking 20/20's numbers as they are lower than normal. I guess we will see next week.

Dateline's increase in the 10 PM hour is interesting. I think its mostly based on the fact that the other options are so poor 10 PM on Friday, they settled with Dateline.

Most Outrageous Moments does decently with just repeats. If NBC actually put originals on and promoted it, I'd be interested to see how it could work as a Friday show.

FOX Still Leads in A18-49 for 2008 July Sweep; CBS Has Most Viewers

Even with a weak Friday, FOX still leads in A18-49 where it averages a 2.0 in A18-49, followed by NBC in second with 1.6, CBS and ABC tied in a statistical dead heat for third with 1.50 each, The CW fifth with 0.6, and MyNetworkTV last with a 0.3 average. Year-over-year, five of the six networks are showing A18-49 declines from last July, while ABC is even to last year. Overall, A18-49 is down 10% across the six nets from last July, and the largest year-over-year declines are being experienced by The CW (down 18%) and MyNetworkTV (down 18%).

After 23 nights, CBS holds on to its customary lead in viewership, with FOX in second, NBC third, ABC fourth, CW fifth and MNT is last.

In viewers, ABC, FOX and CBS are all showing year-over-year increases compared to last years July Sweep, while NBC and MyNetworkTV are only down a small amount from last year (NBC is down 1%, MNT is down 4%). Overall viewership is down only 1% to last July (down 269,000 viewers on average). The biggest year-over-year decline in viewership is being experienced by the repeat-heavy The CW (down 19%).

	total	25.04	25.273	-1%	23	23

* MyNetworkTV first 22 nights only.

The data for the last two nights is based on FAST National numbers, whereas previous nights this this year and last years comparative numbers are based upon final Nielsen numbers.

Nota Bene. This year's Sweep includes the low-HUT Fourth of July whereas last year's Sweep started on July 5th and did not include the Fourth of July.

Hold off on those nails, for a few weeks at least.

Swingtown did pretty good in holding almost all of its A18-49 from 8 nights ago (1.5 vs. 1.6). Yes, there was some viewer drop-off (4.50 million vs 5.32 million), but the dollars-generating demo followed over from Thursday to the new time period.

Swingtown gave CBS it's highest demo number for the night, building by 15% from it's lead-in Numbers. And Swingtown may see its numbers rise a bit in finals as there was a 3 minute over-run by Numbers over into the 10 pm hour.

The real test for Swingtown will come in two weeks when we see how much of this 1.5 in demo it can hold against the Opening Ceremonies of NBC's Summer Olympics.

No Swingtown isn't coming back but the show did the best of any CBS series on the night in the all-important demo. Viewer drops don't mean anything. Overall it appears that switching Swingtown and Flashpoint did just as I expected: it helped neither show. Flashpoint's still getting cancelled too. As for pulling Swingtown, why? Numb3rs repeats will do worse in the demo.

I'm sure it will drop Dumont, but it won't do any worse than another unnecessary crime repeat.

20/20 probably wont do any better next week with it's great lead in of a movie. (Series of Unforunate Events)

Anyways, Swingtown is a loser. The move really didnt help Swingtown or Flashpoint. Oh well.

Congrats to Swingtown for pulling the best demos of the night for CBS and number 2 in its time period. I was expecting much worse for it (see my guess for the numbers - i am happy I was off by so much....)

Last nights episode was one of its best. Such a shame the show is not earning its renewal stripes.

Anyone catch the new episode of USA's PSYCH -- the reunion episode -- I think it's one of the best they've ever done.

Why James Roday is not nominated for best comedy actor is shocking to me...

At least some people see that Swingtown isn't the loser that some might think. It did hold it's demo from the previous Thursday, even though it had a dip in viewers. I wouldn't call it a winner, but I wouldn't call it a loser, either. That seems more of a biased result to me.

If I was CBS, I would have aired the show at 9pm, leading into Numbers at 10pm. It seems like it would lead better out of Ghost Whisperer to me for some reason, and better into Numbers than out of. I wonder if it'll grow any by episode 13 - maybe people just forgot or didn't know it moved to Friday.
