Unlike other members of this board who say that The Good Wife will be one and done after this season, I completely disagree. No way will CBS cancel a series that pulls in 13 million an episode, just because of a lower demo. The wisest thing would be to renew it for a second season and put it on either Fridays or Sundays, which is exactly what I think they'll do.
If they put TGW on Fridays, it would probably go to 8 or 10pm, though. I'd prefer it to go to 8pm - it would be great competition for Law & Order (that's saying if NBC keeps L&O in the same timeslot next season, which they probably would per a renewal), and Ghost Whisperer/Medium would benefit airing an hour later and staying together.
Meanwhile, I really don't understand the jumping around with the CBS shows, Medium in particular, lately. The Halloween episode and the episode after for Medium were probably the best of the season, yet they were the lowest rated. Meanwhile, last night's episode jumped back up to 8.16 million, and I found it to be rather boring. Why do some viewers only seem to watch the rather average episodes? lol.
Count me as someone whos does NOT think TGW will be one and done and I started posting a few weeks about its potential on friday for next year. As a more generic type of show than GW and Medium, it will bring more network viewers who warmed to shows like C2H and Numb3rs. It slants old but it won't matter if it takes this show 9-10mm to get to the 2 demo or so. It's not a great show, barely above average, but in my view should be more appealing than the other two shows I mentioned, and most of all, it brings some freshness to a nite that has grown stale.
On your bafflement about ratings not matching up with the quality of eps, I see disconnects like that all the time, and you have to consider the competition and other factors, including the fact that these friday audiences may not perceive Medium the same way the hard core fans of the show did on Monday. The halloween ep low response confirmed my view that the general cbs audience is not with Medium, and too many of the old timers bailed out after last year. Had this ep aired on Monday nite a year or two ago, the expected response would have occured.

I still find it strange how Medium can go from being the lowest rated show of the block one week to the highest rated show the next. I guess having Dateline as competition instead of Law & Order helped.
Continuing the dialogue from last week, I have to give White Collar its due for going back to 4 million. Which brings us to the question, will it get renewed? It's settling at the 4 million mark which is I view as their boarderline for renewal. A few of their renewed shows are renewed have dipped below that but there are other factors for those renewals in play.
However, I think White Collar is at an advantage because of the state USA Network is in right now. They have an open spot since Monk is ending. Law and Order: Criminal Intent is going through a major cast change which could really hurt its ratings. And their development so far doesn't look particularly strong to the point that there is an obvious replacement. Add it all up and I think White Collar has a great chance at renewal.
The retention out of Monk is amazing and considering the other USA shows are aired in quieter parts of the year, White Collar is doing very well and I think it's going to be interesting if it gets the 9pm slot or Psych.
If I had to guess, Psych will be scheduled at 9 PM and White Collar will remain at 10 PM. That being said, if White Collar comes back, I don't think it will be scheduled for Fridays. Instead, I could see Psych and Law and Order: CI be paired up in the spring/summer when new episodes air.

The sad thing is is that Ugly betty has experienced a creative rise. It deserves to go to another night before being put to pasture -- not even repeats of house and bones can muster much ratings.

White Collar will probably get renewed. It's retention from Monk was excellent and 4 million/1.1 in the demo on Friday is really good.
I wonder how USA will shuffle their shows around. I would like for them to keep programming on Fridays and their future programming seems a tad out of the box for them which is good, imo. I think they will keep WC for at least two seasons just in case of Monk leaving, L&O:CI getting massive cast overhaul and In Plain Sight getting retooled.
But hell, doesn't matter, they still have Burn Notice!
