Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 20 percent at this same point last year to approximately 28 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.
-Friday’s Losers (excluding repeats): America’s Toughest Jobs (NBC), Wife Swap (ABC), Everybody Hates Chris (CW), The Game (CW), Don’t Forget the Lyrics (Fox), Life (NBC)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: CBS remains the network to beat on Friday, with a first-place finish in both total viewers and adults 18-49. But dominating with under 8 million viewers and a mere 2.2 rating/7 share among adults 18-49 is nothing to boast about. ABC finished in the distant No. 2 spot, while last-place the CW, once home to Friday Night Smackdown!, is feeling the pain without it.
CBS mainstay Ghost Whisperer kicked-off the evening on a winning note, with 9.45 million viewers and a 2.6 rating/9 share among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, that was the most-watched show and highest rated for the evening in the demo. And Ghost Whisperer actually built from it’s year-ago performance (Viewers: 8.90 million; A18-49: 2.4/ 8 on Oct. 12, 2007) by 550,000 viewers and eight percent among adults 18-9.
Tied for second in the 8 p.m. hour was Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (which featured Jeopardy champ Ken Jennings) and ABC’s relocated Wife Swap. Take a look:
Friday 8 p.m. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Fox) Viewers: 5.79 million (#2), A18-49: 1.4/ 5 (#3)
Considering Fox’s problems on Thursday, the network would benefit if it moved Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? back to the evening. Also leading off Friday was NBC’s Saturday bound America’s Toughest Jobs (Viewers: #4, 3.95 million; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 4), and the CW’s fading Friday combination of Every Hates Chris (Viewers: #5, 1.76 million; A18-49: #5, 0.7/ 3) and The Game (Viewers: #5, 1.90 million; A18-49: #5, 0.8/ 3). Smackdown!...you are missed!
NBC’s diluted Deal or No Deal was the most-watched show at 9 p.m., but week two of CBS’ goofy The Ex List was first among adults 18-49. Take a look:
Friday 9 p.m. Deal or No Deal (NBC) Viewers: 6.52 million (#1), A18-49: 1.5/ 5 (#3)
The Ex List (CBS) Viewers: 5.71 million (#2), A18-49: 1.9/ 6 (#1)
One week earlier, The Ex List debuted with 6.79 million viewers and a 2.0/ 6 among adults 18-49. And one year earlier, former failed occupant Moonlight averaged a stronger 7.10 million viewers and a 2.0/ 6 in the demo. All and all, I would call The Ex List a disappointment, would you?
ABC’s relocated Superanny (Viewers: #3, 5.02 million; A18-49: #2, 1.8/ 6) got some mileage in the 9 p.m. hour, building from lead-in Wife Swap by 740,000 viewers and 20 percent in the demo. But Fox’s Don’t Forget the Lyrics, which should also return to Thursday, remained out of the competitive loop with a fourth-place finish in both total viewers (4.87 million) and adults 18-49 (1.4’/ 5). Capping of the CW’s very weak Friday was an encore telecast of America’s Next Top Model at a last-place 1.42 million viewers and a 0.6/ 2 in the demo.
At 10 p.m., CBS’ veteran Numb3rs and ABC’s 20/20, featuring an interview with Christie Brinkley’s ex-husband Peter Cook, shared top-rated honors as follows:
20/20 (ABC) Viewers: 7.03 million (#2), A18-49: 2.2/ 7 (#1t)
Although both hours deserve kudos for building from their lead-ins, one year earlier Numb3rs was stronger at 9.16 million viewers and a 2.5/ 8 among adults 18-49 (on Oct. 12, 2007). Finishing third was troubled NBC drama Life at just 4.92 million viewers and a 1.4/ 4 in the demo. Am I the only one wondering why NBC even bothered bringing Life back?

CBS needs to cancel Ex-List now. Those numbers are terrible. Below 6 million in viewership and a 2 in the demo is unacceptable, considering Ghost Whisperer is dominating its timeslot. Ex-List lost out to DOND in viewership and is .1 to losing out to Supernanny in demos. That will happen next week. It'll be gone by November Sweeps and replaced by Flashpoint or The Mentalist repeats.
Both Wife Swap and Supernanny made huge gains from last week. Supernanny is becoming competitive in its timeslot. ABC needs to keep them there and let them grow. Ex-List's loss is Supernanny's gain.
How is Deal or No Deal not a winner? It's #1 in its timeslot for viewers. For a show relocated there and only in week 2 on Fridays, that is impressive. It can grow from there. Yes, demos are lower, but viewership has to count for something. It's not like Friday is a demo heavy day. A lot of people thought Ex-List would dominate the timeslot. That didn't happen.
DFTL is failing on Friday. With the other reality options available (Secret Millionaire, AYSTA5thG, HK, KN, MOT) it's best to give it a rest and hold it for a while. AYSTA5thG is doing slightly better.
ATJ isn't doing an amazing job on Fridays but it grew from last week. Transport those numbers on Saturday (and NBC is actually promoting the move which is surprising to me), and it will look really good on Saturday. Could be #1 in the demo which is what NBC would like to see.
EHC and The Game are done. Putting them on Fridays has killed them. I don't see either coming back past May.
Numbers is lower than expected but it is picking up viewers from Ex-List. I really think not having a lead in for two years (Moonlight and now Ex-List) is bringing this show down. It needs Flashpoint or The Mentalist to keep its numbers up.
And lastly Life isn't producing the numbers it should. I still say that it is the best procedural on NBC, but the viewership just isn't there. I recommend that NBC be patient with it and see if it can grow (it did do better than Lipstick Jungle in the viewers) but it is probably expecting more from it.
I don't think 6.52 million viewers and a 1.5/ 5 in the demo for DOND is impressive, even though it did build from the lead-in.
