-Yesterday’s Winners: NBA Finals, Game 3 (ABC), So You Think You Can Dance (Fox)
-Yesterday’s Losers: Jimmy Kimmel Live (ABC), I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! (NBC), The Listener (NBC)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: Basketball ignited ABC led this second Thursday in June, with an advantage over the No. 2 network (CBS in total viewers, Fox among adults 18-49) of 3.83 million viewers and 83 percent in the demo.
Game four of The NBA Finals (Magic vs. Lakers) on ABC averaged an estimated 12.21 million viewers and a 4.8 rating/14 share among adults 18-49 for the prime-time portion from 9-11 p.m., with the half-hour breakdown as follows:
NBA Finals, Game 3 (ABC) 9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 13.66 million (#1), A18-49: 5.3/15 (#1) 9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 11.31 million (#1), A18-49: 4.4/12 (#1) 10:00 p.m. – Viewers: 12.00 million (#1), A18-49: 4.8/14 (#1) 10:30 p.m. –Viewers: 11.87 million (#1), A18-49: 4.8/14 (#1)
Compared to game four of the Lakers vs. the Celtics on the year-ago evening (Viewers: 13.76 million; A18-49: 5.6/17, based on the final nationals), this was a loss of an estimated 1.55 million viewers and 14 percent in the demo. Keep in mind, of course, that results for all live sporting events are always approximate.
Earlier in the evening on ABC was the combination of Jimmy Kimmel Live, The NBA Countdown and part of the game in the Central Time Zone at a combined 9.46 million viewers (#1) and a 3.6/12 among adults 18-49 (#1) from 8-9 p.m.
CBS opened the evening with back-to-back repeats of The New Adventures of Old Christine (Viewers: #4, avg. 4.83 million; A18-49: #4. avg. 1.3/ 4 from 8-9 p.m.), followed by repeats of CSI (Viewers: #2, 8.58 million; A18-49: #3, 1.7/ 5) and relocated The Mentalist (Viewers: #2, 8.97 million; A18-49: #3, 1.3/ 4) from 9-11 p.m.
Next was Fox care of a repeat of Bones (Viewers: #2, 5.71 million; A18-49: #2, 1.6/ 5) and the first live Dancing With the Stars Results Show of the season (Viewers: #2, 8.68 million; A18-49: #2, 3.2/ 9), which is worthy of positive mention for building by 78 percent among adults 18-49 out of the second-half of Bones (Viewers: #23, 6.16 million; A18-49: #3, 1.8/ 6 at 8:30 p.m.). So long, Tony and Paris!
Over at NBC, the next installment of trashy but addictive I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! averaged an uneventful 5.08 million viewers (#3) and a 1.8/ 6 among adults 18-49 (#2) at 8 p.m. Although the camp lost late arrival Daniel Baldwin last night, how can the season be ending on June 24 if there are still eight D-listers left? And why should bland Holly Montag have a chance to win if she only got to camp a few days ago?
I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! led into repeats of The Office (Viewers: #4, 3.47 million; A18-49: #4, 1.6/ 4) and 30 Rock (Viewers: #4, 3.12 million; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 3) from 9-10 p.m., followed by episode three of Canadian drama The Listener at a last place 4.39 million viewers and a 1.3/ 4 in the demo at 10 p.m.
The CW capped off the evening with repeats of Smallville (Viewers: #5, 1.32 million; A18-49: #5, 0.5/ 2) and Supernatural (Viewers: #5. 1.26 million; A18-49: #5, 0.5/ 1) from 8-10 p.m. Don’t forget that upcoming drama The Vampire Diaries (one of the new fall 2009 shows to keep a positive eye on) moves into the Thursday 8 p.m. hour, with Smallville heading into the Friday anchor position. Chances are 2009-10 will be the last season for veteran Smallville.
Letterman-Conan 3.5/3.0 yesterday. Clearly Letterman it's gonna be the new number 1 late night show. the best Conan can hope for it's to mantain the 2nd place and get around 3 in overnights
So You Think You Can Dance receiving a 3.2 demo for a Thursday night, airing after a repeat of Bones proves that this show is a winner for the fall lineup. For reference, I pulled up an example of Dancing with the Stars from May 5th.
Dancing with the Stars (62 minutes) - 14.556 million viewers - 9.4/14 HH - 3.2/8 A18-49
Considerably more viewers, but the exact same demo, 3.2, despite DWTS having dramatically more publicity, and of course airing during the regular season.
Tuesday, April 28th, same thing, proving the above wasn't a one time event:
Also on the map at 9 p.m. was the live Dancing With the Stars Results Show on ABC with 14.27 million viewers (#2) and a 3.2/ 8 among adults 18-49 (#4).
And on May 12th, getting closer to the finale, you would expect an increase?
The live Dancing With the Stars Results Show generated plenty of interest on ABC, with 13.75 million viewers (#2) and a 3.1/ 8 among adults 18-49 (#4) from 9-10 p.m.
It actually had a lower demo than SYTYCD.
Now I'm not saying that DWTS has bad ratings. I watch that show too. I just wanted to point out that SYTYCD stands in a pretty decent position itself, assuming it keeps up the pace it is currently at.

I agree.
(Hopefully my simple two-word response will make it easier for the loser who likes to break posts down sentence-by-sentence to critique them.)
Those are Dancing results shows that do very poorly in the first half hour and much better in the later half hour. Plus, the Dancing performance eps do much better than that. Aside from the NBA Finals, which are certainly solid competition, the show faces virtually nothing. I'm still not sold.

I personally dont think that SYTYCD will do as well in the fall as in the summer. There is much stronger comp in the fall and it will have have already aired an original run a few months earlier. I think that what makes this show successful is that is airs in the summer and once a year. But we'll see.

This is starting to become very strange. Leno and Letterman never had this much fluctuation night to night, did they? Both shows were pretty much the same every day. But now, it seems like people are switching between Conan and Letterman each night, maybe getting a taste of which one they like better.
Last night, though, was quite a big loss for Conan, being beat .5 by Letterman. Anyone know Nightline's numbers?
Besides that, I'm a Celebrity is still holding in there. They should have just made it 2 hours again, because it seemed like a waste putting repeats at 9pm as a leadin for The Listener.
Old Christine repeats did do better on Thursday than they did on Wednesday, and that was against tougher competition as well. Perhaps CBS should have moved the comedy block to Thursdays? Survivor might benefit by moving to Wednesdays, who knows. And The Mentalist managed to grow out of CSI again - that's a good sign.
I don't understand why NBC is wasting The Listener at 10pm after two repeats. Why doesn't it move it to 9pm for its 13 episodes. It would do definitely better than the comedy repeats since it's growing out of them even in that impossible spot.
