Shark is not on the list

I think CBS should move Shark somewhere new. I'd try Thursdays at 8:00pm. Survivor obviously is just getting smaller and smaller, and will soon call it quits.

FOX Primacy Unquestioned After 18 Days of the 2008 February Sweep:

After 18 days of the February Sweep, FOX sits atop all the other networks with a dominant first place in all key measures. The mammoth FOX lead over its rivals has been fueled by the enormous, record-breaking Super Bowl numbers, the powerhouse American Idol numbers on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and reliable ratings strength on every other night.

In the young audience A18-49 demo that advertisers crave and seek to place their ads within, FOX has the most nightly wins, having beaten the other networks on 11 out of 18 nights so far (one tie), followed by NBC with four nightly wins (one NBC win was a tie with FOX).

After 18 days, ABC holds a tiny 0.01 advantage over NBC for second place in the A18-49 demo. In the households measure, CBS has a firm grip on second place in households, while NBC and ABC are tied for third. In viewership, NBC has pulled into third place while ABC trails in fourth.

After 18 days, FOX and MyNetworkTV are both showing solid double-digit improvement over their numbers from last year. All the remaining networks are showing significant double-digit year-over-year declines, with NBC showing the least year-over-year slippage (-12% in demo, -12% in households, and -9% in viewers) while CBS, who were last year's Super Bowl broadcaster, is faring worst (-60% in demo, -47% in households, -53% in viewers) due to its large proportion of encore programming as a result of the writers strike.

After 18 days, the six networks are showing smaller-than-expected (given the strike and increased use of DVR's) year-over-year erosion: the young adult demo down by -11%, households are down by -11% on a year-over-year basis, while viewership is down by -8% year-over-year.

Survivor was renewed for a 17th and 18th season. Who cares if numbers are getting smaller? 13 million viewers is still a good number for any show. Now if it gets below 10, then they might cancel it, but until then.

Cold Case was new last night? I didnt even know, I thought it was a repeat.

For FOX, how much of that increase is due to the Superbowl?
For MNtv, is this bump outside of the statistical margin of error?

I seriously doubt Shark would get better numbers Thursday at 8 than Survivor does. While it is down some, Surivor still averaged over 14 million this fall. The only 8-9 hour on CBS that gets better ratings is NCIS.

Well, considering 2-3 years ago Survivor was getting 20-23 million viewers, and now it's at 13, and will probably drop another 1-2 million, I wouldn't be surprised if it only had a year left. I remember hearing about a year ago that it was only signed until 2009 anyways, and wouldn't be around after.

As for Cold Case being new, give me a break. There's schedules everywhere. Even on HERE that refer to what's on, new and a repeat.

I think Dexter's numbers were low because of the graphic violence the show has, and CBS advertised that it did, so maybe that turned people away? As for me, I liked the show, but I don't have Showtime. Hopefully CBS will show season 2 in the summer then. Smiler

FOX should cancel American Dad. It's numbers are pathetic. Family Guy has 7.23 million and that drops to 5.35 in a half hour? FOX should just cut it's loses now, and expand Family Guy. I mean who doesnt like Family Guy?!?!?

Knight Rider, ugh. Why couldnt it just crash and burn. This better not become a series next year and if it does, it better be gone within 5 or 6 episodes.

Brothers & Sisters needs Desperate Housewives back. Without it, it would of been cancelled by episode 7 last season. You Brothers & Sisters fans are very lucky that it got the timeslot it did.

Finally The CW. The CW was smart to cancel CW Now, now there is only one week left. Big Grin As for the rest of the night, Everybody Hates Christ did slightly better for the night at 8pm. Aliens in America did ok for airing the same episode like the third time. Once the comedies on The CW get back to original episodes, I think CW can get better then usual numbers for Sunday nights. Especially with that America's Next Top Model starting off the night. Does anyone see The CW getting a 2 million average on Sunday nights starting in March? I think it might, or get very very close.

Survivor Equals 17th and 18th Seasons I must of glanced fast at it then, I thought Cold Case ran out of new episodes. Oh well, I watched the new Family Guy instead.

In that case, how come it built every half hour?

Because people wanted to see if it gets even worse.

Well, SHark's numbers are even smaller than Survivor's, so... that'd be a bad idea. Besides, while Survivor's numbers are certainly declining, they're still pretty darn good. It's like CBS' #2 A18-49 program.

Interesting question.

If your normalize FOX's first Sunday to what that night normally produces, FOX is still a strong number one and still outperforming last year:

FOX minus Super Bowl This Year
This Year vs. Last Year (% change)
----------------------------------
A18-49 demo: 4.93 vs. 4.22 (+17%)
Households: 7.2 vs. 6.1 (+19%)
Viewership: 12.798 vs. 10.288 (+24%)

In young adult demo, FOX has dominated on 11 nights of 18, and that shows the power of their scheduling beyond the Super Bowl.

If you take away the Super Bowl from CBS numbers last year, look at how badly the Eye is performing on a year-over-year basis:

CBS minus Super Bowl Last Year
This Year vs. Last Year (% change)
----------------------------------
A18-49 demo: 2.25 vs. 3.80 (-41%)
Households: 5.4 vs. 8.1 (-34%)
Viewership: 8.214 vs. 12.577 (-35%)

Those year-over-year declines are roughly comparable to the declines being experienced by The CW, and significantly below the slippage being felt by NBC and ABC.

CBS made a critical error in wasting so many of their original episodes of key series in the non-Sweep weeks of December and January. Now, the typical CBS viewer is conditioned to think of their line-up like they think of Saturday nights -- re-run night. So, when they run the occasional fresh episode, as with "CSI: NY" last week or "Cold Case" last night, the fresh episode draws the same numbers as the encore would.

As to MyNetworkTV, I'm not sure what the Nielsen margin of error is, but their numbers last year were pretty steady, and this year they're almost doubling up on what they pulled last year. MyNetworkTV is the comeback story of the season. Other MyNetworkTV observations on their performance during the first 15 days of the February Sweep:
  • Last year, The CW outrated MNT 4:1 on all measures, and this year it's more like 2:1.
  • In the A18-49 demo, MNT has bested The CW once and tied them once out of 15 nights.
  • In households, MNT has bested The CW on two occasions out of 15 nights.
  • In viewership, MNT has topped The CW on two occasions out of 15 nights.

With the upcoming 13-episode sitcom starring Mr. Flavour Flav, and the likely MNT pick-up of the 4.5 million viewer "WWE Smackdown", by the time of next years February Sweep, it's going to be a really slugfest between MyNetworkTV and The CW for fifth place amongst the English-language ad-supported broadcast networks.

I sort of feel sorry for the BB producers...they have a really screwy (but interesting) cast, there has been sex and fights- and the ratings have just been bad. If this cast had been in the normal summer slot, we'd probably be talking about how the show has rebounded ratingswise. The problem is again, CBS really doesn't have anything to work with until they get their shows back up to speed for new episodes, which will be at least 6-8 weeks, and you can only show so many CSI:Wherever reruns.

and speaking of the CBS renewals, do you think Old Christine and HIMYM are fighting for one renewal spot perhaps? BBT got picked up already.

Hello, everyone. I'm new here, I have 11 posts - this is my eleventh. I've lurked the forums for a long time now and I joined awhile back, but rarely do I post. Nonetheless, I felt I should post about my favorite cancelled show.

One year ago today, the series finale of "Reba" aired on The CW. The first part of the finale at 7:00PM got 3.40 million viewers, and at 7:30, 4.44 million viewers tuned in. Compare that to what The CW got on February 17 this year. Embarassing, huh?

I didn't watch Knight Rider, so I have no opinion, but just to get people on here a little mad...

I hope it is a huge hit next year, and it is on the air for awhile.

gotta love the underdog..
