I didn't watch Life on Mars last night and i didn't really understand what this show it's about form the summaries and promos. So please can someone enlighten me? It's a procedural with a SF catch or it's a SF show with procedural elements, it's serialized or it's episodic, it's a dark show or it's a quickier one, like PD tries to be?
Great numbers for ER! Last nights episode of ER was pretty good IMO. Perhaps NBC should run this SNL thing the rest of the year.
I'm surprised that MNIE got on the losers list. Isnt that number up from last week?
I'm also surprised at the number for Kath and Kim. However, I expect it to go wayyyy down next week.
I have to watch Life on Mars on my DVR, the numbers werent that bad.
Hey CBS, what will be on at 10pm on Thursday's in three weeks?

It's a procedural with sci-fi elements, except the procedural happens to be a '70s cop show. The cases each week are '70s cop show cases, but with elements of "what's going on with the main character" -- hearing voices, seeing things from his past, etc. The narration from the original UK show explains the premise very well:
"My name is Sam Tyler. I had a (car) accident, and I woke up in 1973. Am I (crazy), in a coma or back in time? Whatever it is, it's like I've landed on a different planet. Now maybe if I can work out the reason, I can get home."
Good to see ER back on top in the demo. the strength fo the cast (Angela Bassett is a great addition) and the strength of the writing should help this show do well again in its final year.
The biggest surprise of the night (compared to predictions around the time of May/June when Fall schedules were solidifying would be the performance of the SNL special. SNL got a 'gift from God' in the form of Sarah Palin as the perfect joke of a candidate.
Eleventh Hour is another disappointment for CBS in the new development department. Ah well, if The Mentalist holds and Gary unmarried is given time to grow, that will still be more new show success than CBS has had in awhile.
CSI will be the #1 sctripted show on TV this year...and may even get that title even with all of ABC's timeslot changing encore gimmicks.
Originally posted by A.C.: I'll reserve judgement on whether LIFE ON MARS or ELEVENTH HOUR are winners or losers until next week...the curiosity factor is always in play in debuts. Though if ELVENTH doesn't hold up it will be due to the FRINGE FACTOR...as in how many scientific mystery shows can the market support. Remember the LOST clones tanking...INVASION, SURFACE and the CBS version whose name escapes me now.
While it's all well and good to give Life on Mars kudos for a strong debut performance, the fact that ER place #1 in the demo in its timeslot is one of the big stories of the night that should not be overlooked. Though I have found the show virtually unwatchable for four or five years, its resiliency is nothing short of amazing. While its fashionable on this forum to unfavorably compare ERs ratings to the 1990s, a time when network viewership in general was much higher and a time when the shows leading into ER were getting over 30 million viewers, I think last night's performance is worthy of much praise.

TBS has all 4 divisional series and one of the two League Championship Series.
FOX only has, at most, 14 playoff games in October (NLCS and WS)

The article also reminded me about the DVR factor, and I think Life on Mars will definitely be a top-10 DVR show, helping its final numbers...
I actually think it could be the other way around. I DVRed 11th Hour and watch Life On Mars, LIVE. I think there was more of a couriosity factor with LOM than with 11H
