True, 23 million is really within striking distance now! I hope ABC and/or CBS put one of their big guns against AI in January. I actually would not mind if they put LOST opposite Idol at 8pm in February, or put DWTS: Results @ 8pm leading into LOST @ 9pm. I doubt Cavemen and Carpoolers will last till then anyway...

I watch and enjoy BOSTON LEGAL, but the numbers today and in other weeks are way below potential from its lead-in. It's an established show, having aired 4 seasons now. ABC should review the scheduling of the competition and realize it needs to change, especially if DWTS returns in the fall.

I think House is the first series to outrate AI in the demo with AI as the leadin show.
I'm glad to see that! Love HOUSE, hate IDOL!

Did you just start reading this website? That VM "news" was hashed and rehashed endlessly here yesterday. And you can be sure if futoncritic or NY Mag has an item, it is from a daily trade or press release -- and has been discussued here, too. quote: Originally posted by mrpotato531: FROM NEW YORK MAGAZINE: So Long, Veronica Mars: Adios to Rob Thomas's CW cult hit Veronica Mars, as sources familiar with the situation tell Variety that the series is canceled. Last-minute attempts were made to reboot the series as Veronica Mars, Four Years Later, but the network wasn't convinced. Joss Whedon, Paul Rudd, our wife all consumed by righteous fury. http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2007/05/mars_investigations_closed.html

That's pretty damn impressive for a show that rarely ever acknowledged for its success, while the network advertised its other flavor-of-the-week shows like Smallville, GG, OTH, etc.. nonstop. quote: I saw an ad in "teen people" last year for 7H.

I agree, I think partly the drop in ratings is because of the finalists not creating enough buzz but also its not the unbeatable humungous entity it was in years past. I wouldn't be scared putting Lost against it, if Lost keeps up the amazing storytelling it has had lately! quote: Originally posted by Chimera: quote: Originally posted by starbase135: Seems like AI is actually fading...but we will ultimately see about that next January.

quote: Considering Gilmore Girls has had MASSIVE amounts of critical acclaim and advertisement over its 7 year run - there's even 2 billboards on Interstate 90 here in Massachusetts for it still - 4.75 million for a series finale is a huge blow... Especially when you figure that the equally (or less) promoted "series finale" of 7th Heaven last spring (all they got was the back of a TV Guide cover and a few commercials) got 7.56 million. I think we can decipher which series was more successful even though those nasueating TV Guide critics never shut up about the Girls.
Yeah, but how many people who watched 7H were watching it for any other reason than because they thought it "shares our values"? People watched GG because it was good--and stopped watching when it became bad. 7H ran all these years because it was a good solid formula, appealing to an underserved audience. Which frankly, should remain underserved, because they're RUINING OUR COUNTRY.

I agree, as much as I love Boston Legal I feel that it just is not holding onto enough of its potent lead-in. I feel that next season abc should have kept BL off the sched. until midseason to give a new show a shot. quote: Originally posted by Frazier: I watch and enjoy BOSTON LEGAL, but the numbers today and in other weeks are way below potential from its lead-in. Impressive for House... embarassing for A.I. I'm sorry but even 24 million viewers (which it will surely bump up to when finals are released) for the penultimate episode is downright dreary, no matter how you look at. Yes, networks would die to have 24 million viewers and an 8.9 demo rating... but when you compare to last year's numbers, the trend has got to be a little concerning.
Yes, the finalists may have something to do with it - but last years top 3 wasn't the hottest either (Taylor Hicks, Elliott Yamin and Katharine McPhee...) and look what rating they were able to achieve.
Also, anyone questioning the validity and ongoing power of DWTS need only look at last night's numbers. While AI seems to be headed downward on its second to last episode - DWTS is going the opposite way. Last week the DWTS results show got 16.5 million viewers and a 4.1 demo rating. Last night it got 18 million viewers and a 4.7.... and this was against the Country Music Awards - which I would think would have eaten into their audience. I'm surprised it did so well...

quote: I think Ostroff was expecting something from the ratings to bring back to her bosses to convince them to let her renew the show.
I could see her HOPING, but she's a moron if she was EXPECTING. quote: These ratings totally crushed any possibility of that working.
It's not like there was much there to crush. I think the CW's enthusiasm for the FBI reboot was largely a figment of Rob Thomas' imagination. What, they're going to say bad things to a guy who's about to lose his job? quote: And next week will be even worse with the show having no lead-in. I don't think they have anything left to debate now. If VM had pulled in 3 million, then maybe they could spend some time considering renewal.
3mil wasn't even a remote possibility for VM--even if GG had broken all previous ratings records. People just aren't interested. It's not that hard to change the channel. quote: But I think their decision just became even more of a no-brainer than it already was. I don't think they need until June 15 to make a decision.
Unless they just want to avoid making (and announcing) a decision. Which is the same thing as making a decision.

A very impressive accomplishment. While Idol is fading, House is growing (at least for this season).

Lets not kid ourselves, as much as even I hate AI, it is still a ratings goliath that will more than likely be around for quite some time. I feel that this year was just a dull year for them, full of dull contestants(from what I have heard). I think if the contestants are good, the ratings will be there. quote: Originally posted by Chimera: quote: Originally posted by starbase135: Seems like AI is actually fading...but we will ultimately see about that next January.

This will be a true test to see just how well the two shows can do going up one another. I feel that if DWTS can put a dent in Idol abc should consider moving it in the spring up against it. quote: Originally posted by WOODY: Next week is gonna be interesting, Idol presentations finale against DWTS Results finale!
