Well, if Rob Thomas would have used some explosive opening scenes over the past few weeks the ratings might me better...remember the first arc-finale back in November? VM perked up from below 3 million viewers to 3.5 million just because Veronica could be seen bleeding in front of a door...but as of now it's definitely over.
It's been over ever since she kissed Logan Echolls. Just took some people a long time to figure that out.

Especially when you figure that the equally (or less) promoted series finale of 7th Heaven last spring (all they got was the back of a TV Guide cover and a few commercials) got 7.56 million. I think we can decipher which series was more successful even though those nasueating TV Guide critics never shut up about the Girls.
VM has been over since the pilot was filmed. Let these actors pursue jobs that will actually get them seen by more than 2 million people at a certain time....they deserve it.
I'm being somewhat sarcastic, but the point I'm trying to make is how horrible the WB treated 7th Heaven and yet even with ratings under 5 million in April 2006, it still jumped up to 7.6 million for its May 8 finale! That's pretty damn impressive for a show that rarely ever acknowledged for its success, while the network advertised its other flavor-of-the-week shows like Smallville, GG, OTH, etc.. nonstop.
According to thefutoncritic.com this morning, they're saying that - legally/contractually - the CW has until June 15 to reach a verdict on Veronica's fate.
Personally, I am just utterly baffled that a horribly performing show like this is such a tough decision. Jeez...
I don't care if it bumped up a solid 1 million. No network show should be performing at 2.24 million for an original episode, regardless of week-to-week changes. The numbers can't be spun this time around.

That's pretty sad. And you know that if it were any other show, it would have been cancelled by now.
So Long, Veronica Mars: Adios to Rob Thomas's CW cult hit Veronica Mars, as sources familiar with the situation tell Variety that the series is canceled. Last-minute attempts were made to reboot the series as Veronica Mars, Four Years Later, but the network wasn't convinced. Joss Whedon, Paul Rudd, our wife all consumed by righteous fury.

I think Ostroff was expecting something from the ratings to bring back to her bosses to convince them to let her renew the show. These ratings totally crushed any possibility of that working. And next week will be even worse with the show having no lead-in. I don't think they have anything left to debate now. If VM had pulled in 3 million, then maybe they could spend some time considering renewal. But I think their decision just became even more of a no-brainer than it already was. I don't think they need until June 15 to make a decision.
