Prime Time Ratings:
Wednesday 4/25/07

The following results are based on the fast national ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 26.40 million, CBS: 9.54, ABC: 6.87, NBC: 5.98, CW: 3.35

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 10.0 rating/26 share, ABC: 2.7/ 7, CBS: 2.6/ 7, NBC: 1.9/ 5, CW: 1.5/ 4

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
American Idol (Fox), Lost (ABC – it may be down, but it’s far from out)

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
According to Jim (ABC), Notes From the Underbelly (ABC), Crossing Jordan (NBC),

-The Biggest Loser:
The person at American Idol who decided to put poor Jordin Sparks on the spot at the end of the show, making her think she was going home.

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox, of course, dominated Wednesday with the special two-hour edition of American Idol: Idol Gives Back, a concert for charity, at 26.40 million viewers and a 10.0 rating/26 share among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, Fox outdelivered the four competing networks combined by 660,000 viewers and 15 percent in the demo. ABC and CBS tied for the distant No. 2 spot, with CBS second in total viewers and ABC second among adults 18-49 -- one-tenth of a rating point (or four percent) above the Eye net.

You certainly have to give Fox, American Idol and the vast array of performers credit for raising money for young people in extreme poverty in both the United States and Africa. But mixing these good intentions with the live vote-off show was choppy. And keeping us waiting until the very end (and basically torturing Jordin Sparks in the process) to find out that two people will be voted off next week (in place of no one departing last night) was, well, a cope-out. Votes this week will be included in next week’s tally to determine who is leaving.

Here is the half-hour breakdown of American Idol:

8:00 p.m. Viewers: 21.57 million, A18-49: 7.8 rating/23 share
8:30 p.m. Viewers: 25.16 million, A18-49: 9.4/25
9:00 p.m. Viewers: 28.62 million, A18-49: 10.9/28
9:30 p.m. Viewers: 30.25 million, A18-49: 11.8/29

Second behind Idol in the 8 p.m. hour (Viewers: 23.36 million; A18-49: 8.6/24) was CBS’ deteriorating Jericho, at 7.67 million viewers and a 2.1 rating/6 share among adults 18-49. Chances are we won’t be seeing a second season of the Lost-wannabe. Next were ABC sitcoms According to Jim (Viewers: #3, 5.44 million; A18-49: #3, 1.8/ 5) and Notes From the Underbelly (Viewers: #3, 4.87 million; A18-49: #3, 1.9/ 5), followed by a repeat of NBC’s improvisational Thank God You’re Here (Viewers: 4.45 million; A18-49: 1.5/ 4), and America’s Next Top Model on The CW (Viewers: 3.82 million; A18-49: 1.8/ 5).

Second behind American Idol in the 9 p.m. hour (Viewers: 29.44 million; A18-49: 11.3/28) was a repeat of CBS’ Criminal Minds, at 9.77 million viewers and a 2.6/ 6 among adults 18-49. Next was NBC’s on-the-bubble Crossing Jordan (Viewers: 6.37 million; A18-49: 1.8/ 5), followed by a repeat of ABC’s Lost (Viewers: 3.84 million; A18-49: 1.4/ 3), and a repeat of Pussycat Dolls: The Search For the Next Doll on The CW (Viewers: 2.88 million; A18-49: 1.3/ 3).

ABC moved into the 10-11 p.m. winner’s circle, care of Lost at 11.62 million viewers and a 4.9/13 among adults 18-49. Without the benefit of an original episode of lead-in Criminal Minds, CBS’ CSI: NY dipped to second in total viewers (11.18 million), with a now typically No. 2 finish among adults 18-49 (3.2/ 9). Compared to one year earlier (Viewers: 15.23 million; A18-49: 5.2/14, based on the final nationals, on April 26, 2006), CSI: NY was down by a considerable 4.05 million viewers and 38 percent in the demo. Although NBC’s Medium (Viewers: 7.12 million; A18-49: 2.4/ 6) finished last, worth noting was growth out of Crossing Jordan of 750,000 viewers and 33 percent among adults 18-49.

I think those numbers indicate that people weren't wild about sitting through the telethon part and were waiting for the vote-off more. I kind of think that there are some fans that feel a little jerked around after last night.

That Lost encore number at 9 pm is really dragging down the whole evening.

Masters of Science Fiction? Traveler? I ponder whether they could they boost ABC at 9 pm?

There was basically nothing worth watching for me on broadcast waiting for LOST at 10pm. I think people just tuned in to that Idol Gives Back just as a time-filler. I think the other networks should have counter-programmed, and shame on ABC once again for not putting anything decent to lead-in to LOST from 8pm to 10pm on Wednesdays...

YES YES YES!
Lost finally beat CSI:NY in numbers and the demo! Big Grin
I think the CSI juggernaut will get old, maybe not this year, but look at Law and Order, it'll take the same path probably...
Small victory I know, but looks like the bleeding has stopped (for now).
Last night's episode was AWESOME!
I agree with dumont demo, they shouldn't overexpose Lost by doing the repeat thing. It's never repeated well. Even the sucky comedies seem to do better, which is pretty sad.

Right now I don't think anything can save it - they are better off sacrificing lost repeats. Anything new would just get crushed by the final weeks of Idol results.

I love both of those upcoming shows, but I like the current plan to preview Traveler after Grey's on May 10th.

My recommendation (now that moving DAncing: results is no longer an option): move up the start date for American Inventor to May, and have it lead-off at 8pm. Follow it up with Masters of Science Fiction at 9pm, leading into LOST at 10pm. Then Traveler comes into the LOST slot in late May as scheduled.

ABC should title their press release today:

'LOST' BEATS 'CSI:NY' IN ALL CATEGORIES

CBS would get a taste of what they, in turn, did to ABC last fall in their PR's when Criminal Minds beat Lost in viewers (!)

Well.. I never did claim it to be an artistic masterpiece of acting (it's MNTV after all), but c'mon, the story arcs are pretty engrossing, don't ya think?
