Presumably, a premium network like HBO would allow the show the freedom to really explore such dark subject matter without restrictions on language and tone (hey, they kept The Wire on for five years).
And canceled Carnivale without even a backwards glance.
I hate when people tout the glories of HBO or Showtime, they cancel shows just as much and just as fast as all the others.
*bows heard in remembrance of Carnivale, Dead Like Me, Jemimah and Odyssey 5

I agree .. With all the promotions CBS does for this show it got bad ratings . The Unit did much better against AI compared to BB !! What is CBS thinking ?
Don't try and reason with Pam, she won't here anything bad about one of the "classics",The Unit.

HBO cancelled The Comeback with Lisa Kudrow and the show was amazing, had the critical acclaim, and red-hot Kudrow after friends.

Hardly anybody was glancing back after Carnivale--that was the problem.

And that's why Californication (audience of under 500k for the season finale) is going to season two?
In fact, there is a difference between cable and network--cable, particularly pay cable, rarely cancels a show early in its run, or before a full season has aired.
I really don't see why people who watch commercial television are expecting it to function as a nonprofit enterprise. I mean, we used to have great programming on PBS--how many times did you donate?

Didn't like Carnivale, Dead Like Me was lucky to end when it did and is coming back anyway, Jemimah sounds kinda racist to me, Odyssey 5 can always go back in time to prevent its own cancellation.

And that's the only reason I still pay for HBO.
At least until I find out if Alan Ball's vampire series is any good.
And hopefully Big Love will only last another season. One per wife. That's fair. No cheating by having him marry the Serbian chick.

Reason with me ? For what ? Speaking the truth based on facts.. The Unit did much better than BB did . Nothing to argue or debate. The Unit unlike himym is a quality series and CBS is showing its usual Crappy Broadcasting Station mumbo-jumbo and then wonders why it loses viewers to FOX LOL !!

Ugh. Don't remind me. Best comedy they got since "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and they throw it out with the bathwater after one season.
Incidentally, save for "Curb" (and maybe "Big Love"), their shows are absolutely worthless now. And they have to ask why their subscriber base keeps shrinking? If I didn't have a gold package that includes all the other movie channels, I certainly wouldn't pay for this crap.
P.S. Does HBO even know how to show a film in its OAR?
Ok i am going to come up with a good excuse why Jericho didn't do so well in the ratings BB is a bad lead-in. Horrible numbers and it is a realty show it has nothing in common with it this drivel
FOX Cleans Up After 13 Days of the 2008 February Sweep:
After 13 days of the February Sweep, FOX is cleaning up with strong leads in all key measures. The mammoth FOX lead over its rivals has been fueled by the enormous, record-breaking Super Bowl numbers, the powerhouse American Idol numbers on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and reliable ratings strength on every other night.
In nightly wins for the young audience A18-49 demo that advertisers focus upon, FOX has the most nightly wins having beaten the other networks on eight out of 13 nights so far (one tie), followed by NBC with three nightly wins (one tie also). FOX's 8.69 average in the young demo is more than the five-network combined average of 8.53.
After 13 days, ABC holds a narrowing 0.13 advantage over NBC for second place in the A18-49 demo, while NBC in turn is only 0.02 basis points ahead of CBS in fourth. However, CBS has a firm grip on second place in households and viewership.
After 13 days, FOX is at roughly double what its numbers were last year. MyNetworkTV is also showing significant double-digit year-over-year upward movement. All the remaining networks are showing significant double-digit year-over-year slippage, with CBS (last year's Super Bowl broadcaster) faring worst due to its large proportion of encore programming as a result of the writers strike.
After 13 days, the six networks are showing smaller-than-expected (given the strike) year-over-year erosion: the young adult demo and households are both down by 9% on a year-over-year basis, while viewership is down by only 6% year-over-year.

NBC RENEWS DRAMA SERIES 'CHUCK, 'LIFE' AND 'HEROES' FOR 2008-09 SEASON
BURBANK - February 13, 2008 - NBC has picked up its freshman drama series "Chuck" and "Life" -- as well as its hit "Heroes" -- for the 2008-09 season, it was announced today by Ben Silverman, Co-Chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios, and Marc Graboff, Co-Chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios.
All three series will have major re-launch campaigns next year.
"We are thrilled to be bringing back the high-energy dramas 'Chuck' and Life' for next season," said Silverman. "Additionally, we will be saving and re-launching our #1 drama and most successful franchise, 'Heroes,' so that it will run in all original episodes in the fourth quarter."
"These pickups are a sign of our confidence in these quality series and will allow the respective producers to get a head start on their creative arc for next season," said Graboff. "As a result, they give us a lot to build on as we point to next year's schedule."
"Heroes" is NBC's #1 series this season in adults 18-49, the #1 Monday series on any network in adults 18-49 and the #1 scripted series on any network in adults 18-34. This season, "Heroes" has averaged a 6.2 rating, 14 share in adults 18-49 and 13.1 million viewers overall.
"Chuck" has averaged a 3.5 rating, 9 share in adults 18-49 and 8.7 million viewers overall this season. The most recent telecast of "Chuck" on December 3 won the time period in adults 18-49, adults 18-34 and all key adult-male demographics. "Chuck" has increased its adult 18-49 rating from half-hour to half-hour with each of its 11 Monday telecasts this season.
"Life" has averaged a 3.0 rating, 8 share in adults 18-49 and 8.1 million viewers overall. Its most recent telecast on December 5 saw "Life" achieve the show's highest total-viewer result since October 3. That December 5 telecast finished within 1 share of the time-period lead in adults 18-49.
