I think the cross over audience is bigger than people think. They both are female leaning programs that appeal more to a comedy audience.

The CBS comedy block isn't doing much. I would move it on Sunday after 60 minutes. Maybe try Cold Case at 8h00 on Wednesday.

Looking at this, CBS' Wednesday comedies are way too low in the demos and viewers. Look at the demo and viewer jump when CM comes on. Almost double. It was a good experiment but the comedies need to be moved for something that can pull in better numbers. CM would be even more impressive if it had a better lead in.

I agree. With a better lead in Criminal Minds would have even better ratings.

As for Bones, if it can keep its numbers, it is absolutely going to dominate Thursdays at 8 PM. 10.86 million and 3.5 in the demo is great for it. If I were ABC, I'd move UB out of the way. It's struggling right now and Bones will kill it.

Bones is doing well, a good little show with good numbers.

Pushing Daisies would've beat Knight Rider head to head last night.

You mean if it wasn't canceled?

quote:
I can pretty much guarantee you that.

And we all know how much your guarantees are worth, mushu. Wink

quote:
The two programs don't share a shred of the same viewers so to say Knight Rider made Daisies look bad is stupid.

Is NOT! Liar liar, pants on fire! Big Grin

quote:
Pushing Daisies failed because its a show the general viewing public doesn't really get.

They seemed to get Lost pretty quickly. Lots of far more challenging shows (remember Twin Peaks?) have become instant hits. Because people found them entertaining. PD was not entertaining to most people, therefore it flopped. It was a flop pretty much from start to finish--it was well-sampled, well-reviewed, heavily hyped, and people just walked away from it and never came back.

Can't you just admit most people who saw it thought it was boring, contrived, and annoying? That the leads had no chemistry, and the whole look and feel of the show was aesthetically nauseating?

quote:
A lot of them just find it weird or can't keep up with the dialogue (perhaps you're one of these people).

Yeah, that's why I'm reading Dostoevsky now. I need simple escapist fare. Roll Eyes

quote:
Knight Rider on the other hand is perhaps one of the easiest plots to follow on TV: dumb guy with talking car.

And lots of hot women. Wink

quote:
The fact that Knight Rider couldn't do any better than Daisies is the real story.

Or would be, if it hadn't gotten better ratings every single week they were on together, and if PD hadn't gotten canceled, while KR just got 'revamped'. Wink

quote:
By the way, while Daisies has kept its viewers this fall (something it was unable to do last year), Knight Rider continues to free fall.

Btw, PD was a failure from beginning to end.

quote:
You're right. It (Knight Rider) can go now any day.

As far as I'm concerned, but NBC will probably keep it around a while longer.

quote:
Luckily for you, Pushing Daisies is gone too,

Yeah, I've been on a real lucky streak here. For like the last three years or so. Big Grin

quote:
but ABC isn't going to do any better than that on Wednesdays this midseason, especially if Scubs is put there.

I'd correct you, but I think 'Scubs' would be a better title, actually.

Oh, I'm almost forgot:

I don't understand what the bad idea is with MOWE. I think the only real problem with it is it was hard to follow in the first episode...the opening scene actually being from the end. A few other things. But, as the weeks progressed it seemed to flow better, and seemed in general a better product. I really didn't understand why the ratings were so horrible. I also don't understand why a time-slot/day change wasn't explored before outright canceling it. Perhaps this was better suited for a cable crowd? Maybe it wasn't network's "cup of tea" but I could see it doing okay on USA or TNT. Petition anyone?

Is everyone safely tucked away in their earthquake shelter?

Hmmm...Earthquake...has Desperate Housewives had an earthquake yet? Might be the season finale this year?

What show is? Let's face facts here. It seems to me that every single show is down from it's last year's numbers. You can thank the writers's strike for that. People have apparently found other things to do with their time besides watching television. And with these shows being available on iTunes, hulu and the network's own site, there's no need to watch a show when it first airs. Add to that the growing use of DVRs and it's clear what is having to TV viewing this season. I imagine it's only going to get worse from here.

This is so true. That's one of the reasons many shows that would've been canceled in years past, now have full season pickups.

It seems that 5 million viewers is the new 7-8 million.

Why is everyone so concerned about the demographics for "Old Christine" and "Gary Unmarried" for? Does every single series on television have to cater to the 18 to 49 year old viewer (of which I am one)?

Come on, people, give me a break! This is CBS we are talking about here. CBS has some very old skewing series on its roster and most of them are doing quite well. Personally, I believe that is why CBS is the network to beat and has been for several years. It is the most well rounded network out there. One cannot say that about NBC or Fox (which wouldn't be a major player, despite its hit series, without "Idol" still in the mix). So "Christine" and "Gary" aren't setting any ratings records among the younger viewers, but I'm not convinced that moving them to Sunday would automatically reverse that situation overnight.

A big factor last night may have been ABC's Country Music Association awards broadcast. When was the last time the net managed anywhere near 15 million viewers for the 8:00 p.m. hour? Certainly "Pushing Daisies" has come nowhere near those numbers. Surely the awards drew viewers away from the competition - including "Christine" and "Gary".

As for "Criminal Minds", this series would likely draw viewers no matter where it aired or what its lead-in is. Since "Minds" has aired exclusively on Wednesdays during its run, how many "hit" series has it followed? Most likely, none. The lead-in doesn't matter when "Minds" is concerned. Considering that the series drew in almost 15 million viewers last night, I don't think its numbers would have jumped dramatically if "Christine" or "Gary" were not airing before "Minds".

Sorry for the rant, but it can be infuriating when people suggest that just because a series isn't doing well among a certain demographic that is should be moved and/or canceled (using this logic, "60 Minutes" would have been canceled years ago). The old saying that "television is meant for everyone but not every series is" certainly remains true. When some of these people leave that vaunted 18-49 demographic will they then be complaining that there's nothing on television except for shows that appeal to all the young "whipper snappers"?

(For full disclosure: I am not a regular viewer of either "Christine" or "Gary" so I am not speaking from a purely "fan" standpoint.)

If it holds up in finals, Bones will be the highest demo #'s this season. I guess the guy from Roswell as Booth's brother brough in a few viewers.

I don't know how much good the KR reboot will do. It will be the third iteration NBC has given people, so how many will come back again? Movie, tv show 1, tv show 2...

The simple answer is yes. CBS comedies are designed to grab the younger demos that the CBS dramas may miss. A 2.0 is disasterous compared to the other comedies. Right now, CBS could put 48 Hours Mystery which is a lot cheaper to produce in that spot and get the same demos.

I missed this in the last post.

Lead ins matter. There is a popular thought that shows are isolated and can do well by itself but it doesn't work in practice.

Look at Numbers. When it had the low rated Ex-List as a lead in, Numbers numbers were a season low. When it had a NCIS re-run as a lead in, it reached a season high. This is an established show that had an established fanbase. If a show does poorly before an established show, the established show will have a dip in the ratings. With a stronger lead in, the numbers improve. Viewers stay on channels more, especially on CBS.

Hopefully this is a joke

Gasp! Could the barracuda, pit bull, "Thrilla from Wasilla" hockey mom Sarah Palin be guesting on Desperate Housewives? According to the New York Post today, Marc Cherry wants to put the former veep nominee in the season finale.

Bones may be the most Viewer proof show. Not only does it deliver in any time slot, but it seems to be able to keep its numbers up as stunt programming is scheduled against it.

Last week it had DWTS and this week the CMAs. Bot times it posted some of its stronger numbers for the season.

Fox finished third in total viewers and second among adults 18-49 (tied with ABC) care if its line-up of Bones (Viewers: #2, 10.86 million; A18-49: #2, 3.5/ 9),

Law & Order (Viewers: #3, 7.91 million; A18-49: #3, 2.2/ 6),

Doesn't look like last week was much of a fluke. This show has really taken a hit just since last spring. Unless USA Network comes to the rescue, this may finally be L&O's last season.

I agree. FOX has placed it around the schedule, rumored to put it on Fridays, and it still produces for them. Imagine how high the ratings could have gone if FOX placed it somewhere and kept it there.
