But how would you know that if you don't watch it.

As for the death of scripted TV, I doubt that will happen. Look at the Power of 10, it bombed this week. Reality shows are very hit or miss. The Biggest Loser has a huge online fanbase which keeps it afloat. American Gladiators will have the sports/wrestling fans watching. Celebrity: Aprentice has the trainwreck factor going for it. Going forwrd, my prediction is Moment of Truth will tank.

The promos for Dance Wars are so very dull that I fear ABC's Dance Wars will tank big time, and ABC is going to have a major problem when it does. How will they fill the gaps in schedule if they have to remove if for the February Sweep?

I also think Dance Wars runs the danger of diluting the Nielsen potency of the Dancing with the Stars franchise.

Which is after sampling a program, I generally do just that, not watch it. I think I am down (before the strike) do 4 shows I will watch on network tv. 3 on cable.

But I do like to sample, so I can at least have an opinion (though I am aware that the quality of any program does vary between episodes).

Mais nous sommes les inventeurs de la réalité, xwiseguyx!

The irony of it all is that most successful American reality television are unscripted moment-for-moment concept copies of successful European or Asian reality television programs. In Europe, reality tv of one guise or another (masquerading sometimes as documentary news or gameshows) has been a mainstay of programming since television began because it was inexpensive to produce, whimsical in nature and it appealed to the masses.

Back in the late eighties or early nineties, I met with a local unit hired by a Japanese reality series that featured Sumo wrestlers who travelled Japan and the world doing silly strength and agility stunts...they were in town because their Sumo wrestler was off to the local animal sanctuary to wrestle with a grizzly bear, who easily out-matched Sumo wrestler lost in three consecutive few-second matches. Appararently, this program, and I cannot recall its title, was big in Japan, and it is one of the few around that seems to have not been concept-copied by Hollywood producers with periscopes aimed abroad.

Almost all reality shows currently on air are imported from Europe or Asia

Reality shows... I am not sure I can say all of them suck. I don't watch much Reality, but they seem to get viewers based off of what interest people, and I think most people will admit that they don't think the show is particularly good but that it is interesting.
Most reality gets addictive once your mind enters the world of the show. I have never watched the Bachelor but I assume people get lost in that world, and that they get addicted to knowing who the guy will end up picking. In this aspect Reality is JUST LIKE scripted shows. I watch LOST, Heroes, Battlestar Galactica, Dexter and I get lost in the worlds of those shows, watching the story and being fascinated with what's going to happen next.
So I cannot say that reality sucks. What I can say is that most reality does not fascinate me. Some like the The Amazing Race do because I get to learn about different places in the world and observe the psychology of team work and development.

With the fickle TV audience, finding a successful program is really a 'crap shoot'. If you were to set the concepts of American Idol, 'RockStar', and 'Making the Band' next to each other would they really look any different? Even if you watched the shows without outside knowledge of what the rest of the world is watching, would you be able to detect one was a 25million viewer show, one was a 7 million viewer show and one was a 2.5million viewer show? I'd like to think that Dance Wars will saturate the market and fail, but until the public actually chimes in, I'm not sure there is any way to logically predict if it will be the next AI/DwtS or the next Rockstar/So you Think You Can Dance, or the next Making the Band/? Hmmm, there does seem to be an opening for a dance show in that last category. Wink

80% of what's on TV doesn't suck. Unfortunately there are also reality shows.

Now see, I personally think at least 80% of tv sucks all the time, for all genres. I would even say probably closer to 90%.

Someone would probably point out that last your statement isn't an example of 'irony', but what is it? Certainly, it is an example of you needing to take your own advise to realize that just because you don't like reality TV, it does not mean that it all sucks.

I fear this could happen. ABC has a tendency to throw too many dice at once (Who Wants to Be A Millionaire, Drew Carey, relationship dramas). I worry more about relying so heavily on the Dancing franchise to lead off the fall schedule because once "Dancing" goes dud, it could pull down an entire Alphabet fall season with it.

If Dancing falters when it debuts in the waning days of the February Sweep, by the time the May Sweep rolls around, ABC shall have made quick disposal of it.

I do have a rather keen eye for the 2.5 million viewer show, or so I'm told.

You do, but that 'eye' has to claim that Dance Wars will be a big hit, not that it will tank. Wink

ABC and Dancing With The Stars.
FOX and American Idol.
NBC and Deal or No Deal.
CBS and the CSI flavors.

CBS is in the best position to survive if their 'gimmick' comes crashing down, but all 4 networks risk a significant hit when they place so much emphasis on one basket.

That good number gathered up by Mr. Trump (though next week, it will dive, unless NBC pre-empts) will probably mean that his Apprentice stays put Thursdays at 9 pm, which means NBC will probably break up their 'Comedy Done Right Night' block of four sitcoms going forward. If two comedies stay on Thursdays (say at 8-9 pm), where will the other comedies go?

I just hope it's not Tuesdays (Tuesday sitcoms have only worked recently with Frasier them built around Fraiser, the following 2 seasons without Frasier did terrible) or Friday. I think Earl would be moved and put before a new sitcom. They wouldn't risk 30 Rock without a good lead-in.

But The Apprentice has never stayed consistent year-to-year, would NBC trust it?
