I see this sentiment all the time on these boards. It makes no real sense. How good (or bad) a show was will not have much effect on ratings for the night. Sure, if a show is *really* bad the half hour might show a more significant dropoff than usual, but for the most part people are watching (or not watching) BEFORE they find out how good/bad the current episode is in quality. So, if last night's episode was really good, the effect probably won't show up until next week when people will be coming back for 'more of the same' or new viewers will be tuning in as a result of the watercooler talk regarding the last episode.

Other people mentioned it on the boards. One person called it "Cupid's effect." Lost_fan said it was because of "Valentine's Day."

I would think that most people who have a significant other are spending the evening with them on Valentine's Day and away from the TV. I think of a lot of people had to tape or DVR Lost last night (to watch at a future time) because they went out to dinner or were having a romantic evening with their significant other.

To suggest that there is no viewer drop off for shows on Valentine's Day is somewhat silly - you must never have been in a relationship before. Obviously, for one night a year (regardless of what day of the week the holiday falls on), your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse is going to be "more imporant" than your TV shows. So, there is bound to be a drop off. Next year, it will hit Thursday night. It just happened to be on a Wednesday this year.

So Marc, is there any statistical validation of this so-called "Valetine's Day Effect"?

Have you noticed a viewership drop off in past years?

HUT/PUT levels are up, not down.
**More** people were watching.
Please stop writing anecdotal observations that are "somewhat silly."
Thanks! Smiler

Ooof. I never thought moving to 10pm would sink Lost so low and so quickly.

I have it with a 7.6/12 in HH and mere 5.6/14 in A18-49. ABC, save this show from yourself!

This might be some interesting research to do.

Perhaps Lost's viewers tending to lean toward single males not in relationships. So, Valentine's Day (and the commitments to significant others that come with that holiday) don't have as much effect on a show like that.

I bet Heroes, Veronica Mars, and One Tree Hill are pretty resilient against Valentine's Day too!

The Lost rerun won't end up being much worse than that. I vote for Primetime or Supernanny/Wife Swap to lead into Lost once they end their current runs in their new timeslots. Until then, just stick with the Lost repeats.

Think of all the single people that cannot go out to restaurants, clubs, etc... on Valentine's Day because of the 'shame' of being alone. They all stay home and watch TV. For every person you claim acting as part of a couple on Valeentine's Day, there is some other person that isn't in a relationship, that 'has' to stay home on Valentine's Day rather than going out with friends. Why make assumptions about how people act on V-Day when the TV ratings for prior years can be checked?

Marc,

Veronica Mars has always been a "loser" in ratings, I mean always, only this years they were not in the loser list for several episodes. This season rating wise, is better than S1 or S2 right? So why would they cancel the show when it's doing better in ratings than the previous years? I mean it's not news VM has low ratings.

Because even with ratings gains its still losing a lot of viewers from its lead in. Recently, the episodes have really fallen off, dropping to low 2 million range when it was averaging about 2.85 to 3 million before.
