Prime-Time Ratings:
Tuesday 4/08/08

The following results are based on the fast affiliate ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 17.85 million, ABC: 10.75, NBC: 8.91, CBS: 8.26, CW: 1.77

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 7.2 rating/18 share, NBC: 3.4/ 9, ABC: 2.5/ 6, CBS: 2.3/ 6, CW: 0.7/ 2

--------------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 13 percent at this same point last year to approximately 23 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

---------------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
American Idol (Fox), NCIS (CBS), Dancing With the Stars (ABC), The Biggest Loser (NBC)

-Yesterday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats):
Just For Laughs (ABC), Beauty and the Geek (CW), Secret Talents of the Stars (CBS)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Led by powerhouse American Idol, Fox remains in a league of its own on Tuesday. Tied for No. 2 was ABC (in total viewers) and NBC (adults 18-49), with CBS a disappointing fourth and the CW fifth overall.

Since we all know that American Idol dominated Tuesday, let’s start with the series-premiere of CBS’ non-scripted Secret Talents of the Stars, which was DOA at 10 p.m. Secret Talents of the Stars opened with a miniscule (and, of course, last-place) 4.61 million viewers and a 1.5 rating/4 share among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. Comparably, that was about one half the audience of a repeat of Criminal Minds on the year-ago evening (Viewers: 9.98 million; A18-49: 2.9/ 8 on April 10, 2007) and a major drop from the series-finale of former occupant Jericho on March 25, 2008 (Viewers: 6.02 million; A18-49: 1.8/ 5).

Also on CBS was the reliable NCIS (Viewers: #2, 13.88 million; A18-49: #2, 2.9/ 8 at 8 p.m.), which always manages to hold up well against American Idol, and Big Brother 9 (Viewers: #4, 6.30 million; A18-49: #4, 2.4/ 6 at 9 p.m.), which is currently in search of the next round of contestants for the upcoming summer edition. Needless to say, pink-haired James is leaving tonight.

Moving to Fox, American Idol opened with a very dominant 24.00 million viewers and an 8.9/24 among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m. That led into Hell’s Kitchen, which finished second in total viewers (11.63 million) but first among adults 18-49 (5.4/13) from 9-10 p.m. As for who is most likely to be leaving American Idol tomorrow (tonight is special Idol Gives Back), take your pick – Carly Smithson or Syseha Mercado, who may not benefit from taking back to Randy. My pick: tattooed Carly.

ABC’s big winner, of course, was the live Dancing With the Stars Results Show, which ranked first in total viewers (16.54 million) and third among adults 18-49 (3.5/ 9) from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, that built from the season (or series) finale of lead-in Just For Laughs (Viewers: #4, 5.64 million; A18-49: #4, 1.5/ 4 at 8 p.m.) by a whopping 10.90 million viewers and 100 percent in the demo. Earlier in the evening on ABC was another edition of Just For Laughs at a fourth-place 5.46 million viewers and a 1.4/ 4 among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. The return of Boston Legal capped off the night first in total viewers (10.16 million) and second behind an encore telecast of NBC’s Law & Order: SVU among adults 18-49 (2.5/ 7).

Over at NBC, a two-hour edition of The Biggest Loser remained on the map with 9.05 million viewers and a very solid 3.7/ 9 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. and growth in every half hour. Tale a look at the half-hour breakdown:

The Biggest Loser
8:00 p.m. Viewers: 7.55 million (#3), A18-49: 2.9/ 8 (#2)
8:30 p.m. Viewers: 8.11 million (#3), A18-49: 3.3/ 8 (#2)
9:00 p.m. Viewers: 10.01 million (#3), A18-49: 4.1/10 (#2)
9:30 p.m. Viewers: 10.52 million (#2), A18-49: 4.4/11 (#2)

Considering the competition, The Biggest Loser is a winner for NBC! Also on NBC was the repeat of Law & Order: SVU at 8.62 million viewers (#2) and a first-place 3.0/ 8 among adults 18-49.

Last, and very least, was the CW’s combination of Beauty and the Geek (Viewers: 1.80 million; A18-49: 0.8/ 2), which could use a permanent breather, and a repeat of Reaper (Viewers: 1.74 million; A18-49: 0.6/ 2).

It's a good thing Moonves like older viewers, because that's what CBS is getting.

Not good for NCIS. Not good for CBS.

I predicted yesterday that their entire lineup would fall below 30 Rock's season average in the demo (2.9)

Well, I was wrong. NCIS managed to tie. How impressive.

NCIS can no proudly join the ranks of CBS procedurals that have come back from the strike to demo numbers that fall at below 30 Rock's sseason average!

Is this the beginning of the end for CBS?

Methinks yes.

Boston Legal's problem is that it skews so old now. Yeah, it was always older skewing, but now the best it can do is mid 2's -- I just don't think it will cut it for renewal.

Any show that can get 13 Million viewers against American Idol is very impressive for CBS, regardless of the demo.

The Biggest Loser remains highly underrated. It comfortably beat DWTS in the demo during the 9pm hour (4.2 vs 3.5). It's numbers didn't even look so bad compared to Hell's Kitchen. which benefited from a huge lead-in.

Note: the first half hour of TBL tied NCIS's numbers and every half hour after that beat it (demo-wise).

Even a repeat of SVU beat NCIS in the demo!!!

SVU also comfortably beat Boston Legal in the demo.

CBS will be fine. Big Brother will go back to the summer, and their schedule next season will have a better flow to it.

All of the net's schedules will have better flows.

A 2.9 demo in the face of the AI onslaught (and Daylight Saving Time) is an acceptable number. The extra older viewers are bonus.

All it did before a lot of the time was mid to high 2s. The fact that it had a 3 million viewer bump after such a long hiatus is promising and if it shows any growth in coming weeks, who knows, the chimps may come to their senses and use WMC on Mondays instead of Tuesdays and shove the dying Bachelor off to Wednesdays.

I think Shark may end up at 9 or 10 on Tuesday couple weeks earlier than planned.

The Chimps will never come to their sense that quickly. May be something happen and somehow they will be replaced, then a more sensible schedule would result.

Is this the most boring April in pifeedback's history?

Okay, granted, it's only the second April in pifeedback's history, so the competition isn't fierce.

You have needless concerns, imo, as do many BL fans, of which I am not one.

What it does in the next few weeks won't change the net's opinion of the show for the worse.

And even if WMC did ok in its trial, I rate it as highly unlikely it would end up in that slot next year

I can't imagine that CBS will actually run seven weeks of "Secret Talents of the Stars." The initial rating was already unacceptable with future episode numbers liable to only go down further.

That said, it's a live program that depends on a fan voting component so CBS can't just throw up tapes on CBS.com either. Could/would the celebrities even perform their acts live if only online viewers can see them?

It wouldn't stun me to see "Secret Talents" end up as a reality competition without a winner.

And yet they are in a tie with ABC and NBC for the demo ytd - but I am sure it is the end of CBS. Roll Eyes Methinks you just don't like CBS.
