Saturday 6/20/09

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 4.38 million, Fox: 3.91, NBC: 3.33, ABC: 2.74

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 1.3 rating/5 share, CBS: 0.9/ 3, ABC and NBC: 0.7/ 3 each

----------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 20 percent at this same point last year to approximately 28 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Saturday’s Winners:
Nothing

-Saturday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
Kings (NBC), Harper’s Island (CBS), Eli Stone (ABC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS and Fox shared leadership on this typically lackluster Saturday, with CBS first in total viewers (at under five million) and Fox No. 1 among adults 18-49 (with a mere 1.3 rating). Mirroring the past few weeks, Saturday remains a breeding ground for burn-off episodes of canceled series (Kings, Harper’s Island and Eli Stone last night).

A repeat of should-not-have-been canceled Without a Trace opened the evening for CBS with 4.11 million viewers (#1) and a third-place 0.6 rating/2 share among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. That led into an original installment of canceled Harper’s Island (Viewers: #2t, 3.79 million; A18-49: #2, 0.9/ 4) and a repeat of 48 Hours Mystery (Viewers: #1, 5.25 million; A18-49: #1, 1.2/ 5) from 9-11 p.m.

Fox, of course, aired its perennial combination of Cops (Viewers: #2, avg. 3.75 million; A18-49: #1, avg. 1.3/ 5) and America’s Most Wanted (Viewers: #1, 4.07 million; A18-49: #1, 1.3/ 5) from 8-10 p.m.

NBC kicked-off Saturday with another burn-off episode of canceled Kings (Viewers: #4, 1.94 million’ A18-49: #4, 0.5/ 2) at 8 p.m., followed by repeats of Law & Order (Viewers: #2t, 3.79 million; A18-49: #3, 0.8/ 2) and Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: #2, 4.25 million; A18-49: #2, 0.9/ 3) from 9-11 p.m. And ABC aired a repeat of Wipeout (Viewers: #3, 3.24 million; A18-49: #2, 1.0/ 4), a repeat of Castle (Viewers: #4, 2.48 million; A18-49: #4, 0.6/ 2), and the return of the remaining episodes of Eli Stone (Viewers: #3, 2.50 million; A18-49: #3, 0.5/ 2) from 8-11 p.m.

Those are some really low ratings for Kings, HI, and ES. Although, ES did grow slightly from a Castle repeat.

Looking at NBC's ratings for Saturdays over the year, the only thing that has brought in any sort of viewership is crime repeats. Everything else they have tried hasn't done well. If NBC actually follows through and puts Dateline Saturdays at 8 PM (they thought about it last fall but I don't think they scheduled one episode of it there), then it would be a smart decision. It fits the audience that already watches NBC on Saturday and could probably pull in 5 to 6 million routinely. Trauma repeats doesn't make much sense though at 9 PM. It's not crime related and will probably lose whatever ratings Dateline can gain. If Dateline works, they should try some low budget original crime shows at 9 PM and 10 PM in limited orders, getting away from repeats. With Cops/AMW declining at a rapid rate, it seems like the right move for them.

Stephen Baldwin has quit I'm a Celebrity. 4 people quitting in 2 weeks, NBC are lucky there's only 1 week left.

Also I wonder if the Celebs bothered reading their contracts because odds are quitting the show breaks the contract and they don't recieve any money for appearing on the show (That's how the UK one works, not sure about US).

They prolly didn't care. I doubt if any of'em were depending on this show for their living. In fact, I believe a Class "A" celeb would tarnish his/her rep by appearing on this lame show.

TV-aholic, quick question about the PIF Summer Project -
Walter would like to create Knight Rider 2.0 with the same cast as the cancelled NBC 2007 version. Is he able to do this? Thanks! Smiler

If I were a member of Mr. Silverman's programming team, I would get on the telephone to the producers of MyNetworkTV's 'Jail', 'Street|Patrol', 'World's Funniest Moments' and 'Masters of Illusion'.

All four series did decent numbers for MNT this past season, and all four are being cut loose by MNT as part of their economic crisis response strategy in contracting out Monday to Wednesday nights to Universal and 20th-Fox syndication packages.

For NBC, all four of these series could do decent Saturday night numbers, and probably serve to knock FOX's 'Cops'/'AMW' combo down a notch or two.

'World's Funniest Moments' starring Mr. Arsenio Hall gave MyNetworkTV its best ever Wednesday 8-9 pm series Nielsens, but wasn't invited back for a second season.

Yes, it built by 350,000 P2+'s and 0.2 in A18-49, and with virtually zero promotion from the Peacock marketing department.

I do hope it wasn't plagued by as many affiliate defections across the nation as last week. The Nielsen finals will tell the story.

'Kings' has been a marvellous miniseries to date, very reminiscent of 'Rich Man, Poor Man'. NBC should have taken a page from Mr. Fred Silverman's playbook and done an accelerated playoff of 'Kings' as an NBC Big Event...this strategy has worked very well for 'I'm A Celebrity...', and it may be one of the strategems that networks can do to create a sense of occasion where people watch live to keep up with the storyline and watercooler chatter, instead of cumulating episodes on their DVRs to watch at their leisure.

NBC's 'Kings' represents a throwback to the glory days of the grandly produced longform miniseries

Why would he quit when the show is ending on Wednesday?
