If a person goes to a movie and is bored silly, why should that be considered the "best" in entertainment and make it more worthy than a movie that the masses have enjoyed. Movies deemed worthy by a bunch of snobs who think their tastes are above the average movie goer is hardly a reason for celebration.

And again, the main goal of the Oscar is to be the "prestigious" movie award and promote the industry. Boosting ratings on ABC is not a primary concern if it means giving a Best Picture award to "I am Legend" over "No country for old men" or "There will be blood", both much better films by the way.

There is always the People Choice Awards for the most popular movies. And yes, getting a People Choice Award doesn't do get you on the cover of magazines or invited on talk shows, which proves the Oscar formula works best.

I could see the possibility of Will Smith being nominated for Best Actor for that film in a world where the Oscars 'pandered' to popularity. However, the film itself could not logically be nominated as 'best film' in any set of circumstances.

So ABC makes history: lowest rated Oscars EVER.

Glad it happend: last year was awful movie-wise.

Both the high grossing movies and the "artistic ones" (or non-commercial, don't know how to called them) were really really bad. I agree with Pisher Ratatouille should've won best picture

I am a Legend was plain awful. I've seen better direct to DVD movies

I have seen most of the movies nominated and I wasn't "bored silly", then again I am a cinephile.

Not everyone can appreciate a good movie, and the masses often "like" horrible films like Shrek3 or Spiderman3, which will be forgotten in ten years. Although Oscars and critics are often wrong as well, they are still a much better indicator of quality than box-office.

I realize this may come as a shock, on a forum dedicated to ratings.

Guys, it's okay. Didn't you hear? "Norbit" got a nomination.

Both SpiderMan and Shrek will be classic movies in ten years. And if you don't like them it doesn't mean they're horrible. Anyway Shrek3 was miles better than No Country for Old Men, which is a snoozefest by the way.

The initial numbers from last year had the Oscars at 23.5/35, which would mean "only" a 7% drop from last year, which went on to get just over 40 million. So, 36-37 million would still be in the cards, which is still the second lowest Oscars ever, but not that awful. And hey, it'll still probably be the year's biggest non-sports broadcast.

Again, you can always follow the People Choice Awards, but Oscars (and quality movies in general) are clearly not for you.

I make fun of bad television shows. I correct the bad spelling and grammar of people who have the nerve to question my intelligence while defacing the English language. Oh and I abbreviated somebody's board name here, and got accused of Anti-Italian bias. Big Grin

I don't call successful female screenwriters 'whores' on the basis of their having made a living as strippers for a short time. I mean, that's not even TECHNICALLY correct, Riff. Sheesh, how frustrated and emasculated do you have to feel to throw words like that around? Big Grin

There's plenty of whores making it big in Hollywood--most of them are men, and have far more power than Cody ever will. She wrote something she believed in and sold it. I may not think it's genius, but I won't use the misogynist's equivalent of The N-Word to attack her for having the nerve to achieve something in a male-dominated industry, after working her way up from a less prestigious arm of showbiz.

Never took you for a prude. An unfunny poseur, sure. But not a moralist. How precious. Big Grin

I only expected it to get between 36-38 million (my prediction was 37.6 million), but the low rating would suggest that it could be lower than that. Unless much more people watched in large gatherings, thereby having a lower rating than 2003 but a higher overall viewership. In any case, we'll find out around 3pm.

Through some kind of antiquing process? Confused

Seriously, they are both nice pieces of entertainment, but hardly films for the ages. Both will age badly--already have, in fact. Please note that Spider-man 3 and Shrek 3 both fell far short of expectations at the box office.

People are already tired of them.

I'm sure many more "cinephiles" went to see Shrek 3, Spiderman 3 and 300 than No Country for Old Men. The problem with the Oscars is not necessarily that they are bad indicators of quality, but rather, they dismiss a lot of movies that are of good quality just because they are not an elitest fare. Otherwise, we would have seen at least one of the Harry Potter flicks get an appropriate nomination.

Last year, I recall that Little Miss Sunshine was up for Best Picture. I saw that and while mildly entertaining, it was hardly a masterpiece of cinema. It's evident that something is wrong with the process for nominating the most Oscar worthy movies.
