"Farmer," the reality show about Missouri farmer Matt Neustadt's quest for a bride, has been a solid country cousin. It's outdrawn other, hipper former occupants of its 9 p.m. EDT Wednesday slot on CW, including "Pussycat Dolls Present" and "Beauty & the Geek," in both total viewers and the advertiser-coveted 18-to-49 demographic.
I don't think Farmer Wants A Wife is a loser at all. Those numbers are higher than Pussycat Dolls, Crowned, B&TG, all of the comedies, and some episodes of GG and Reaper. All when it faced Idol and summer ratings slump. If CW was smart, they would give the series a mid-season pickup. It is doing very well for CW in a filler role. CW has a winner here (based on their standards).

For starters, you can't say a sport has non-stop action when they stop after every single play. I love football (traditional and arena style), but the game just doesn't have the same flow hockey has. It's ultimately a matter of personal taste and I understand that a lot of folks just don't like hockey for whatever reason, but arguing that football of any kind is non-stop simply doesn't hold any water.
Just because they are still skating & "hitting" a puck around does not mean that the "Action" is still going on. There are long period of time that nothing really happens in Hockey, even though the play is continuing.
But I do agree it is far better than basketball. The sport is just too boring now.

Fox led the midweek troops care of another two-hour installment of So You Think You Can Dance, which averaged a healthy 9.26 million viewers and a 3.6 rating/10 share among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. Take a look at the half-hour breakdown:
So You Think You Can Dance (Fox) 8:00 p.m. Viewers: 7.93 million (#1), A18-49: 2.9/10 (#1) 8:30 p.m. Viewers: 9.15 million (#1), A18-49: 3.4/10 (#1) 9:00 p.m. Viewers: 9.92 million (#1), A18-49: 3.9/11 (#1) 9:30 p.m.: Viewers: 10.06 million (#2), A18-49: 4.0/10 (#1)
HA! Suck on that, Office fansheep!
Um, The Office does better demo numbers and faces MUCH stiffer competition. Get back to us when the garbage that is "Dance" actually faces something - anything - that can top 10 million viewers.

I agree that SYTYCD wopuld get lower ratings if it were up against strong competition. However, the claim that The Office would have higher ratings if it aired in the summer does not make sense. The lack of summer competition would not be able to offset the fact that The Office fans would have better things to do in the summer than watch TV. Winter makes for a captive audience and the spring ratings for most shows demonstrate quite well that they would not maintain winter sized ratings if aired in the summer.

When I watch a football or basketball game, I see players in control of the ball and players working logically to defend against the score. When I watch hockey, for the most part, I see random 'action'. Hockey is a sport where one team rarely spends more than 15 seconds 'controlling' the puck. Even 5 seconds of control is a stretch most of the time. It is a game that is about 95% random happenstance, which is why most people do not find it interesting enough to watch.

They should do a Bachelorette-type sequel of the show, City Girl Wants Farmer.

I don't really agree that original shows would get lower ratings in the summer. The reason the ratings are lower in the summer is because the networks put nothing on. When American Idol debuted several years back in the summer the ratings were just as good or better than they are now in the winter. When CBS debuted Survivor in the summer way back in 2000 its ratings were better then they have ever been in the winter. Maybe fresh shows in the 8PM hour might suffer a bit, but new shows at 9 or 10 would do just as well in the summer, especially considering there is no competition. Again, not that they would ever do this, but if NBC had new episodes of The Office on during the summer on Thursdays at 9, they would easily go over 10 million viewers, and would get record demo numbers for that show. That show has to compete with 2 of the most popular shows on TV in the regular season. About 35 million viewers watch CSI and Greys every week. Without that competition a show like the Office would thrive. I would even guess that it could get 15 million and build into a big hit in the summer.
But the networks will never give us new episodes of scripted shows, with the exception of burn off type stuff, because of this myth that people don't watch TV in the summer. How is that then the cable networks have fresh scripted shows in the summer and they do very well with them? A&E had a new movie on this past Monday, even on a holiday, and it got them 4.5 million viewers. The people will watch in the summer if given some good, fresh stuff to watch.

Ummm, what was the Office's season averages?
I love the show, but it is NOT yet a HIT.
Season 4 averaged 8.55 million viewers. I don't know the demo average, but I think it would be over 4.0. I love the show too, but I wouldn't classify it as a mainstream hit. It is, however, a very successful demo show with respectable overall numbers despite being in the toughest timeslot on TV. I don't see how anyone can make a legit claim that "Dance" is a bigger hit in any way, shape, or form. Its overall viewership is barely better despite far weaker competition, and its demo numbers are considerably lower. Neither show is a true hit, but if either can be considered a hit in any way, it's The Office.

I guess these numbers are good for hockey. From medialife magazine :

Hot pucks: Stanley Cup Game 3 soars Averages 1.9 in 18-49s on NBC, triple last year By Toni Fitzgerald, MediaLifeMagazine.com staff writer, May 29, 2008
Hockey’s postseason comeback continues. Two nights after Game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals became the most-watched program ever on Versus, with 2.61 million total viewers, Game 3 on NBC saw ratings soar over last year’s dismal performance.
The Pittsburgh Penguins’ 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings averaged a 1.9 adults 18-49 Nielsen overnight rating from 8 to 11 p.m. As a reminder, overnight ratings measure timeslot and not actual program data, so the numbers will adjust when final numbers are released later today.
But it’s safe to say that Game 3 got a major bump compared with last year. The 2007 Game 3 averaged an NBC record-low 0.6 rating, less than a third of what last night’s game pulled.
The Stanley Cup game was also up in total viewers, from 1.63 million last year to 4.46 million this year.
