Marc's analysis and bias against NBC continues to make me LOL. All season long he makes low rated shows on FOX like 5th Grader and Lyrics make out to be huge hits because how much they improved FOX Thursday night. However, as usual, he blasts the ratings of NBC when they don't deserve to be. As other posters have pointed out here, NBC's ratings for the Stanley Cup Final last night were a HUGE improvement from last year. Now I will be the first to admit that those numbers do not make the show a "winner", but how about pointing out the improvement instead of giving us the same old "NBC was barely on the map with game three of the NHL Stanley Cups Finals..." Where are the yearly comparisons? Why do you manage to look for a silver lining with the other networks but you can never do the same for NBC? Is a doubling in rating and a quadrupling in demo not warrant a mention in your "expert" analysis?

How about pointing out that NBCs ratings for the NHL last night beat the most recent airing of a NBA Playoff game on ABC last Saturday. I know that Saturday was a holiday weekend, but still. The NBA rights fees dwarf the NHL rights fees. Actually NBC's agreement with the NHL is strictly a revenue sharing deal with no rights fee.

Thanks again Marc for the "expert", "no-bias" analysis. Roll Eyes

They broadcast the sport because they have a deal with no rights fee with the NHL. It is a revenue sharing deal in which NBC makes a lot of money. Meanwhile ABC/ESPN pay huge rights fees for the NBA, and in its most recent airing on ABC Saturday for a playoff game got lower ratings than NBC did last night.

And you deserve your opinion, but the NHL happens to be a lot more exciting to watch, especially in HD, than basketball and baseball. Most people just don't know the sport.

To call back a discussion we had a few weeks ago, it looks like SYTYCD is a BIGGER "Hit" than The Office Is.

Fox led the midweek troops care of another two-hour installment of So You Think You Can Dance, which averaged a healthy 9.26 million viewers and a 3.6 rating/10 share among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. Take a look at the half-hour breakdown:

So You Think You Can Dance (Fox)
8:00 p.m. Viewers: 7.93 million (#1), A18-49: 2.9/10 (#1)
8:30 p.m. Viewers: 9.15 million (#1), A18-49: 3.4/10 (#1)
9:00 p.m. Viewers: 9.92 million (#1), A18-49: 3.9/11 (#1)
9:30 p.m.: Viewers: 10.06 million (#2), A18-49: 4.0/10 (#1)

Anyone else know?

If it aired in the regular season though its numbers would be lower than the Office. It is not a really a good comparison to compare summer shows with no competition to regular season shows. Not that this would ever happen, but if NBC aired new episodes of the Office in the summer its ratings would be much higher than SYTYCD.

Love that site. It always has everything at least a week out, and often 2-3 weeks. Also makes it clear what's a repeat and what's new.

As has already been said, NBC pays nothing for the broadcast rights, so they've got nothing to lose. Despite low ratings by normal prime-time standards, the broadcasts are profitable. It also helps that hockey has a nice collection of loyal sponsors that will buy ads regardless of the ratings.

And anyone who says hockey is boring has obviously never been to a game in person. It's the most exciting sport when you're there live. Also, it's much better on TV these days, thanks to HD.

PS: You should be the poster child for screenname character limits.

Your right it is my opinion...but my opinion is shared by many as evident by the NHL being the least popular attendance wise and all of the four big guns (NFL, MLB, NHL, MLB)....I like scoring so that's why I like football (at least the NFL) the best......I don't care for baseball either except for my favorite team (Brewers), the Red Sox-Yankee rivalry, or if I watch the games in-person...because I agree they are very boring if you have no team to cheer for on tv....I don't care for the NBA either except for my Suns....College basketball and the NFL are the only two sports I watch religiously besides having my favorite team to cheer for

I beg to differ, but I think Arena Football is a much more exciting sport, both Live and on TV. It is non stop action of a sport MOST people enjoy.

Actually Versus does have an HD channel. I have DIRECTV and I get it. All the Versus NHL games are available in HD.

I'm glad to know its available! Hopefully it will be coming to Dish soon. I think they finally got their new satellite up cause they added about 20 HD channels in the last few weeks.

You are obviously misinformed, because while the NHL does struggle with TV ratings, attendance wise they are right there with the NBA. This season the NHL had an average attendance of 17265 per game. I can't find the NBA for this season, but last season their average was 17700.

And based on attendance vs total capacity, the NHL far outweighs baseball. Obviously more people are going to go to a baseball game vs a hockey game; look how much cheaper it is. That is why baseball stadiums hold 40,000-50,000 seats, while NHL/NBA arena hold 16,000-18,000.

Anyone who goes has gone to a hockey game will agree that it is more exciting than basketball or baseball. Hockey on TV has always been more difficult to watch, but with HD it makes a huge difference.

I enjoy the AFL. I've been to several games in person and I occasionally watch it on TV too. But it's not better than hockey. For starters, you can't say a sport has non-stop action when they stop after every single play. I love football (traditional and arena style), but the game just doesn't have the same flow hockey has. It's ultimately a matter of personal taste and I understand that a lot of folks just don't like hockey for whatever reason, but arguing that football of any kind is non-stop simply doesn't hold any water.

Attendance is not the anchor that has been keeping the NHL down over the years - especially when you factor in the Canadian based team's attendance. It has always been the poor TV ratings that have held the NHL back. As has been pointed out, these are pretty good numbers for the NHL. Of course if next years final is between a Canadian team and a southern U.S team, the number will be back to abysmal, but that doesn't change the positive of this year.

TV-aholic, "Shirley" you jest?

Absolutely. He lists almost every CBS show as a winner, praises his favorite shows whenever he can, and hates NBC.
