Jordin was 16 last year and she won...

Well, I'm sure there are a lot of reasons.

I suspect most Americans simply feel no need to watch shows with sub-titles. There is such an abundance of English programming and movies available, that they see no reason to seek out foreign language shows. Most Americans just aren't used to watching shows with sub-titles and have no motivation to start.

I'm sure I'm not the only person who multi-tasks when watching TV, and, like I said, it's harder to multi-task when you have to keep your eyes on the screen all the time.

You also loose a bit in reading sub-titles. It's harder to pick up vocal cues like inflection when you don't know the language or are focused on reading rather than listening.

Well, if i'm interested in seeing something that's not in english i don't have any kind of problem with the subtitles. But maybe that's just me.
The only thing that really bothers me is movies like Gladiator where the "roman" people speak english, that's just absurd and i never watch this kind of shows/movies.

Jordin Sparks was 17 and they never failed to remind us of that last season. Smiler

I agree with David A. being a overrated and with singing first being a major disadvantage and going last a major advantage. It's a great way for the producers to subtly manipulate how the voting will go. As stated in an earlier post, Sayesia (sp?) is last in voting at dialidol.com and David A. is the only one considered statistically safe.

With the large differentiation in viewership from the first half hour to the last, watch how the producers pick the order in which they sing week to week. It's not random. Jordin sang last several times last year and it was always on weeks she had a great song/performance. It becomes pretty obvious who they want to win every season.

They'll even change up how they do the eliminations to skew voting the following week.

We have two networks that struggle to do that with English speaking programming. I really doubt that the average person is going to know/ seek/find out that Univision has subtitles.

plus, the programming is bad (for lack of a better word) that those that did sample it, wouldn't stick around. The cultural gap is too wide.

What do you mean by "the programming is bad"?
The acting on the scripted shows are pretty bad. The variety shows look awful. Its almost like the quality is about 40 years behind.

Marc, it may be time to learn Spanish.

With those numbers, Univision is the real #5 network. Eeker Forget the CW.

Excerpt from variety's recap of American Idol -- a perfect analogy, if you ask me:

quote:
At this point, Ryan and Simon have whipped up enough animosity for each other that it’s straddling the line between disgust and sexual tension. It’s just too “Moonlighting” for words. The minute they sleep with each other, the show will take a dive in the ratings.

The only downside to Univision is that its ratings growth is limited to the population growth of the hispanic communities.

Oh please, i could say the same thing about ai which is the most watched show. And talking about bad acting, have you seen some of the actors from GA lately. Or do you remember The OC?

I think Archuleta has sang already three times as last or penultimate contestant

Which brings the same question i had yesterday: why we don't get Univision ratings here?

We are talking about AMERICAN TV NETWORKS here guys. I can accept the truth that the Spanish-speaking net Univision beats The CW. SPRING TIME is the WORST SEASON for The CW.

This might come as a shock to you, but UNIVISION is also an AMERICAN TV NETWORK

Sure, but to be fair, you are going to misss far more than subtle vocal cues if you are 'multitasking 'to begin with.

They could probably get away with CSI:Los Angeles or CSI: Denver and have it realistically be a cast filled with Spanish speakers. Wink

As for the acting ability: looks just like the daytime soaps to me. I don't think it is about 'bad acting' so much as it is about cranking out 5 shows per week on a tiny budget. Some of those CSI shows (David Carruso) have huge budgets and only churn out one show every week, yet they still look like they are reading directly from cue cards.
