Never thought of this...I guess it could explain why Grey's is down 8 million viewers since Febraury. I find it hard to believe there are actually that many viewers who stopped watching it live.

But I think one of the reasons why the viewers suddenly dropped is till to Nielson's lack of planning. When Nielson implemented the college ratings earlier this year, they obviously installed Nielson rating boxes in the dorms of colleges across the state. As we all know college students watch TV and don't just cram their noses in books. When the final comes, obviously there are going to be viewers that would not watch study, but I assure you that plenty of people still watch plenty of TV during finals week. What Nielson didn't account for is that finals for colleges begin in May and end about one and a half week later. So that means that students are now moving out of the college dorms that have Nielson Boxes and back to their homes, which doesn't have Nielson Boxes. It's not that the viewers have dropped significantly. It's just that the college age viewers have all moved back home to watch TV instead of watching in their dorms. The Nielson Boxes, which are located in the dorms, are now inactive and thus it seems like there was a massive viewer drop. That would also explain the sudden downward spike in most of the demos. And if you check the list of college shows that had the most upward tick when college ratings were counted, I think quite a few of those shows will also be having the most severe downward spike. Last I check Nielson didn't recall all the Nielson Boxes in the college dorms.
I thought they only counted college students in dorms when those student's real homes had Nielsen boxes. Like, Mommy & Daddy are a Nielsen family. Junior goes off to college; before his viewings didn't count, now they do. When/if he goes back home for the summer, his viewership should be counted at home ...
When Nielsen added the college out of home viewers the numbers only ticked up a couple of tenths of a point at most (in the overall ratings) so this theory, though sounding interesting, doesn't come close to explaining the major dropoff in viewing this season.
That dropoff, by the way, is fairly constant in both the overall viewers and the 18-49s.

As far as I know only students whose parents already have Nielsen boxes have them at their college as well.

Doesn't the overall viewers also include the demo ratings? So if the demo drops, so does the overall ratings. There are going to be a variety of reasons for why there is a major dropoff this season, however I am not saying it is the only reason why ratings are dropping. Also this is the first year that Nielson Boxes implement the college system and there are going to be statistical flaws during the college entrance and exit periods.

Installing Nielson Boxes only at the dorms of children whose parents have Boxes sound like it shouldn't effect the ratings, but it will still effect the ratings. First the Nielson at the college dorms are used to represent the college population, which were previously not included in the Nielson ratings. If the Nielson Boxes at college were not suppose to effect the ratings, then there is no reason to install them. Second the Nielson Boxes installed at the colleges represents a different sample size compared to the boxes at home, since students dorm together in groups of 4-6. And the calculation for the college stats obviously includes everyone living the dorm not just the child of the parents with a box. Third students and their parents may have different viewing tastes, so DVR and TiVO becomes much more used when there is a conflict in the TV schedule. Finally during May, most of the private colleges finish finals by the 10th while public colleges finish by the 24th. It's during this period that college kids are moving back home, so some of the Nielson Boxes that represent college kids are off while others are still on.

So to have it said that the new system is responbile for an eight million viewer loss in "Grey' Anatomy" is just wrong. Or that the new system is flawed and responsible for a major part of the double digit viewer or demo dropoff.
Why would anyone think that Nielsen just leaves the boxes on all summer with new students in the dorm?
The boxes stop being counted when the student leaves the dorm (or whatever) room.
But whatever, this is a tiny, small, almost totally insignificant number although I can understand that it probably seems gigantic to those forum members who are in college.
But when Nielsen first added the new college viewers to the ratings earloier in the season, only a few shows had an noticeable spikes -- and those spikes were of the modest variety.
If those students return home, their viewing is counted there. If they don't return home, then their viewing is presumably lost.
