-Ratings Breakdown: Led by CSI and a Thursday edition of Without a Trace, CBS was the most-watched network on this third Thursday of the May 2007 sweeps. But Grey’s Anatomy-ignited ABC pulled ahead among adults 18-49, with a four percent advantage over CBS. NBC and Fox tied for the No. three and four spots, respectively, followed by cellar-dweller The CW.
Survivor: Fiji kicked-off the evening for CBS with a dominant 13.64 million viewers and a 4.3 rating/14 share among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. Comparably, however, that was still a decline of a hefty 3.32 million viewers and 26 percent among adults 18-49 from Survivor: Panama on the year-ago evening (Viewers: 16.96 million; A18-49: 5.8/17 on May 11, 2006, based on the final nationals). Is there anything the network can do to add new life to the declining franchise next season? Keep in mind that the two-hour season finale of Survivor: Fiji, followed by a live reunion special will air this Sunday beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
ABC’s declining Ugly Betty finished second in the hour in total viewers (9.39 million), but a fourth-place 2.9/ 9 among adults 18-49 could be a concern. Also in the hour was Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader (Viewers: #3, 8.99 million; A18-49: #3, 3.0/10), which is beginning to skew surprisingly older, and The CW’s Smallville (Viewers: #5, 3.36 million; A18-49: #5, 1.3/ 4).
Since 40-minute episodes of NBC’s My Name is Earl and The Office are impossible to accurately break down by show, here is the results for NBC by half-hour from 8-9:30 p.m.:
NBC/Thursday 8:00 p.m. My Name is Earl Viewers: 6.60 million (#4), A18-49: 2.8/ 9 (#2)
8:30 p.m. My Name is Earl/The Office Viewers: 7.59 million (#4), A18-49: 3.8/11 (#2)
9:00 p.m. The Office Viewers: 6.59 million (#4), A18-49: 3.5/10 (#3)
Sticking with NBC, on-the-bubble Scrubs dipped to 5.30 million viewers (#4) and a 2.8/ 7 among adults 18-49 at 9:30 p.m. (#3t). If NBC finally swings the axe, why on earth would ABC (as rumored) want Scrubs?
ABC moved into the winner’s circle at 9 p.m. as a result of Grey’s Anatomy, with 19.07 million viewers and a 7.5/20 among adults 18-49. Second was CBS’ CSI at a still potent (but considerably softer) 18.60 million viewers and a 5.4/14 in the demo. Also in the 9-10 p.m. hour (in addition to NBC’s aforementioned The Office and Scrubs) was a second episode of Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader (Viewers: #3, 8.61 million; A18-49: #4, 2.9/ 8), and The CW’s Supernatural (Viewers: #5, 2.84 million; A18-49: #5, 1.2/ 3). Although this is only speculation, I am will to bet that upcoming CW drama Reaper will inherit the Thursday 9 p.m. hour out of Smallville, with Supernatural moving to Sunday next season. What do you think?
Top honors at 10 p.m. went to the season-finale of CBS’ Without a Trace at 14.39 million viewers and a 3.9/11 among adults 18-49. Comparably, that put retention for Without a Trace out of CSI of 77 percent in total viewers and 72 percent among adults 18-49. Second was NBC’s deteriorating ER (Viewers: 9.20 million; A18-49: 3.8/11), followed by the lackluster preview of ABC drama Traveler at 8.88 million viewers and a 3.6/10 in the demo. Comparatively, retention for Traveler out of Grey’s Anatomy was just 47 percent in total viewers and 48 percent among adults 18-49. Even worse was a loss from 10 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. of 1.96 million viewers (9.86 to 7.90 million) and 20 percent among adults 18-49 (4.0/11 to 3.2/ 9). Recent occupant October Road averaged 10.39 million viewers and a 4.4/12 in the demo in this time period.
For last night's episode of Supernatural leading into the finale and it being really good, these numbers really do worry me now. What in the hell happened? ****headdesk***
You know, I'd be fine with Ugly Betty ending next season. They do NOT have five years of story there. And I want to see America Ferrara get to pretty up, already.
The Office just doesn't have mass appeal. I thought last night's ep was hilarious, but it lost a million viewers from Earl (and that show annoys the crap out of me). I hope it can go on another year or two, but the material will get stale if they keep it on too long. The original British series only had 14 episodes over the course of two seasons (and two Christmas specials). And Steve Carell has other places to be.
Everything is so low for this time of year no? Both CSI and GA under 20M...???
As for Traveler, the show last night was amazing and by far the best new show of the season...Why did people don't watch is a mystery to me....unless it's really not compatible with Grey's Anatomy.
It's a good thing they are repeating it on May 30th...

Peace!!
This week has to be a all time low for the CW especially now that its in sweeps....Top Model didnt even get 5 million this week.

Marc, you really think CW would put a new show in the Thursday night death slot? I'd love for Supernatural to get moved to a less competitive night, but if the competition stays the same on Thursdays next season I'm thinking they'll probably keep Supernatural there because it really did hold its own all season. I feel like putting a new show there is pretty much murder.

I didn't get SPN ratings. What happened that they went down like that?
Marc, on the moving to Sunday's subject, do you think they'd be getting what was Charmed spot back at WB?
Thank you for continually bringing us the ratings.

Half hour breakdowns for Supernatural and Smallville?
Everything is still lower that it should...not just on the CW...I am starting to think there is something wrong with the ratings.
How can everything go down so suddenly...I understand about online possibilities , DVR and such, but that didn't just happen last month...weird...

Not true, the CW has low ratings back in Feburary during sweeps. This is the only other time that Supernatural has been under 3million viewers. The first time was with the episode "Born Under a Bad Sign," which garnered about 2.88 million viewers. So it has happened before, but for some reason, I just do not understand it.
With hearing that NBC wants to make The Office and Hour and the rumor going around that Fox wants to put Prison Break at 9pm on Thursday nights, I think that it is time for Supernatural to get out of the line of fire, so it can grow in viewers, not get trampled on by the other networks.
I am starting to think that the other networks have something against the CW! I don't know, but this just plain sucks!!
