Prime-Time Ratings:
Monday 2/02/09

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 13.27 million, Fox: 13.01, ABC: 9.60, NBC: 8.44, CW: 2.43

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 4.6 rating/11 share, CBS: 4.3/10, ABC: 3.7/ 9, NBC: 3.3/ 8, CW: 1.2/ 3

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
House (Fox), The Big Bang Theory (CBS), How I Met Your Mother (CBS), Two and a Half Men (CBS), The Bachelor (ABC), CSI: Miami (CBS)

-Should Have Been Better Given the Massive Promotion During The Super Bowl:
Chuck (NBC), Heroes (NBC), Medium (NBC)

-Yesterday’s Losers (Excluding Repeats):
Worst Week (CBS), True Beauty (ABC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a Monday of mixed leadership, with CBS the most-watched network (with 260,000 more viewers than second-place Fox) and Fox No. 1 among adults 18-49 (with a three-tenth of a rating point advantage over CBS). ABC was third overall in both categories, followed by NBC and the CW. NBC’s fourth-place finish is particularly alarming given the massive promotion on Sunday Night’s Super Bowl.

CBS’ only weak link on Monday remains sitcom Worst Week at 9:30 p.m., which is being replaced by the returning Rules on Engagement on March 2. Here are the results for CBS:

CBS/Monday
8:00 p.m. – The Big Bang Theory
Viewers: 10.89 million (#2), A18-49: 4.1 rating/10 share (#2)

8:30 p.m. – How I Met Your Mother
Viewers: 10.18 million (#3), A18-49: 4.2/10 (#2)

9:00 p.m. – Two and a Half Men
Viewers: 16.52 million (#1), A18-49: 5.5/12 (#1)

9:30 p.m. – Worst Week
Viewers: 10.04 million (#3), A18-49: 3.1/ 7 (#4)

10:00 p.m. – CSI: Miami
Viewers: 15.99 million (#1), A18-49: 4.4/11 (#1)

Fox won the 8 p.m. hour courtesy of House, which averaged a very healthy 14.75 million viewers and a 5.5/13 among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. Lead-out 24, meanwhile, was third in total viewers (11.28 million) and an atypical fourth among adults 18-49 (3.7/ 8). Considering the still healthy 3.7 rating in the demo, there was an abundance of success to be found on the competing networks.

ABC’s vastly improved The Bachelor earned a place in the winner’s circle, with 10.99 million viewers and a 4.1/10 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

The Bachelor (ABC)
8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 10.17 million (#3), A18-49: 3.6/ 9 (#3)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 10.87 million (#3), A18-49: 4.1/10 (#3)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 10.73 million (#3), A18-49: 3.9/ 9 (#3)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 12.19 million (#1), A18-49: 4.6/10 (#1)

Despite the dominance at 9:30 p.m., 10 p.m. lead-out True Beauty dipped to 6.82 million viewers (#3) and a 3.0/ 8 among adults 18-49 (#2). Quoting one of my Mediaweek co-workers: “I saw 10 minutes of True Beauty last night. It was the worst show I have ever seen.”

NBC lagged, meanwhile, with its new Monday as follows:

NBC/Monday
8:00 p.m. Chuck
Viewers: 8.35 million (#4), A18-49: 3.0/ 7 (#4)

9:00 p.m. Heroes
Viewers: 8.45 million (#4), A18-49: 3.9/ 9 (#3)

10:00 p.m. Medium
Viewers: 8.53 million (#2), A18-49: 2.9/ 7 (#3)

While one could argue that NBC was indeed on the map, considering the promotion on Sunday’s Super Bowl this is a wash.

The CW capped off Monday with Gossip Girl (Viewers: #5, 2.27 million; A18-49: #5, 1.1/ 3) and the compatible One Tree Hill (Viewers: #5, 2.60 million; A18-49: #5, 1.3/ 3), which always manage to deliver among the target young female audience.

Wow, that is kinda sad. Even with a big Super Bowl buildup, NBC still couldn't get outta the basement. But Medium did pretty well (not great) considering it's been off the air for months. And it was NBC's highest rated show of the night, beating out it's lead-in. But NBC still got clobbered. This is just pathetic.

Heroes and Chuck were both up in the demo. I wonder if Heroes' numbers will stay at this level as I've read this episode was pretty good compared to others. Medium was solid. It'll hopefully provide some timeslot stability for NBC.

What an absolute bust for NBC. With 95 million people watching their promos during the Super Bowl, and Chuck with its 3-D gimmick to finish fourth is terrible. These shows will all decline next week even further. NBC needs to find some new programming.

Wow, look at those numbers for The Bachelor. It just goes to show that if ABC has a likeable bachelor, the ratings will be better. Does anybody know why the CW is scheduling Gossip Girl so weirdly? It was a repeat last week, a new episode last night and then repeats for the next two weeks during sweeps.

It looks like House is affecting HIMYM more than BBT. BBT's ratings are about the same, but HIMYM has had a little decline the past few weeks.

Seeing The Bachelor on the winners list is still surreal, but it's deserving as a very guilty pleasure. It's strangely addictive.

ABC, if smart (oxymoron), it will continue to have rejected contestants as The Bachelor or Bachelorette. Jason, the current Bachelor, is the reason this season is doing so well, as Deanna was the reason The Bachelorette did so well over the summer. This franchise still has life in it if not overkilled.

The formula is simple: Popular rejected contestant as Bachelor/Bachelorette, Bachelorette in the summer, The Bachelor between DWTS editions in the winter.

Medium lost to True Beauty and was the lowest rated show of the night on NBC. Not a good return at all.

The demo for 24 will be interesting watch to see if it continues to head south as the season progresses. This season is just not holding my attention at all. I don't know if it's a decline in quality or a general "been there, done that" thing. I think I'm done. (I'm also gettign pretty House-fatigued but it looks like I'm alone there. Wink)

Sweeps is not during this month, it was pushed back slightly because of the DTV transition. I am sure this is why you are seeing repeats now, so they can offer new episodes during sweeps.

Thanks for the info. I guess that makes sense with the FCC getting rid of the analog broadcasts this month.
