-Ratings Breakdown: Led by the return of an original installment of CSI (and still minus Grey’s Anatomy on ABC), CBS stood well above any competing network on Thursday. Second overall was Fox care of a double dose of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, followed by NBC, ABC and the CW.
CBS’ veteran Survivor: Micronesia opened the evening on a dominant note, with 12.84 million viewers and a 3.9 rating/11 share from 8-9 p.m. Compared to Survivor: Fiji on the year-ago evening (Viewers: 13.58 million; A18-49: 4.3/13 on April 5, 2007), that was a decline of 740,000 viewers and nine percent among adults 18-49. Also the hour was the first half of an expanded edition of Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Viewers: #2, 9.93 million; A18-49: #3, 2.8/ 8), a one-hour original edition of NBC’s My Name is Earl (Viewers: #3, 7.49 million; A18-49: #2, 3.1/ 9), two more episodes of ABC sitcom Miss Guided (Viewers: #4, avg. 4.56 million; A18-49: #4, avg. 1.5/ 4), and a repeat of Smallville on the CW (Viewers: #5, 2.41 million; A18-49: #5, 0.9/ 3). Although ABC has referred to the 8:30 p.m. edition of Miss Guided as the season-finale, you can consider it the series-ender. There is little to no chance of it returning next season.
First at 9 p.m. -- and for the evening -- was the return of CBS’ CSI at a healthy 20.40 million viewers and a 5.8/15 among adults 18-49. Comparably, that built by 7 million viewers and 38 percent among adults 18-49 from the second half of Survivor (Viewers: 13.40 million; A18-49: 4.2/12). On the flipside, however, it declined from the year-ago telecast (Viewers: 21.69 million; A18-49: 6.7/18 on April 5, 2007) by 1.29 million viewers and 13 percent in the demo.
Second in the 9 p.m. hour was the second hour of Fox’s expanded Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? at 10.25 million viewers and a 3.0/ 8 among adults 18-49. Overall, that put the Jeff Foxworthy-hosted game show at a healthy 9.99 million viewers and a 2.9/ 8 in the demo from 8-10 p.m. Next were two repeat episodes of NBC’s The Office (Viewers: #3, avg. 4.89 million; A18-49: #3, avg. 2.4/ 6), followed by a repeat of ABC’s Lost (Viewers: #4, 4.11 million; A18-49: #4, 1.3/ 4), and a repeat of the CW’s Supernatural (Viewers: #5, 1.76 million; A18-49: #5, 0.7/ 2).
The return of an original episode of CBS’ Without a Trace beat the competition combined at 10 p.m., with 15.40 million viewers and a 4.1/11 among adults 18-49. But all things considered, the retention out of CSI (75 percent in total viewers, 71 percent among adults 18-49) could be better. Also in the hour was ABC’s on-the-fence Eli Stone (Viewers: #2, 5.22 million; A18-49: #3, 1.6/ 4), and two more encore telecasts of NBC’s The Office at an average 4.34 million viewers (#3) and a second-place 2.3/ 6 among adults 18-49. Although there is buzz aplenty about NBC’s plans to introduce a spin-off from The Office next season, has anyone noticed that this comedy is not a breakout hit (and never will be)?
Ooooo, Earl with only a 3.1? I would say NBC might wanna start freaking out, since that is night a big return for a much hyped hour-long episode, but on the other hand, look at the Office. 2 hours of reruns averaged 2.3 in the demo. Much better than usual. The real test will be next weak for the Peacock.
Survivor is stumbling.
CSI didn't do fantastic (it's down 13% for the record everybody). but it did ok.

Amazing what qualifies a show as 'on the fence' these days. I suppose the ratings are as good as According to Jim, but seriously, there is no reason for this show to be renewed.
Here's hoping abc renews Miss/Guided for another season, but with a lead in this time. I also hear that abc is trying to snag "Old Christine" from cbs, lets hope that works out.

Miss/Guided pulled in half the demo of My Name is Earl. I know that ABC is desparate for comedy, but is it really worth ABC renewing something that pulls a 1.5 demo?
