Households of Whedon: 'Dollhouse' vs. 'Buffy', 'Angel' & 'Firefly'
I must open by saying that I agree with Mr. Whedon's assessment that episode 6 of 'Dollhouse' would be a game-changer. Last nights episode was a tension-ridden 60 minutes, and the start of what looks to be a fascinating story arc.
After 6 episodes broadcast, 'Dollhouse' is continuing its trend to steadily hold most (90%) of the 'Buffy' households from twelve years ago, but hasn't been able to grow that number. While 'Dollhouse' lags behind the first 6 of 'Angel' (tracking 68% of 'Angel's households average), 'Dollhouse' is tracking better against 'Firefly' tracking at 81% of households and 85% of viewers.
Once you add in the DVR viewing, the first three episodes of 'Dollhouse' (averaging 5,280,000) are tracking at 95% of 'Firefly's' first-three-episode viewership (5,533,333). However, while 'Firefly' was declining, 'Dollhouse' is performing much steadier.
I think FOX learned the err of their ways with the mishandling of 'Firefly', and I don't look for them to repeat their folly with 'Dollhouse'. If the upcoming press conference confirms a new season of 'Dollhouse', I would expect that FOX might drop 'Dollhouse' in behind 'American Idol' or 'Angel'-friendly 'Bones' for a few one-shots to try and widen the household, A18-49 and viewer exposure.

'Friday Night Lights', NBC's Renewalworthy Friday Night Clutch Performer
Unhappy to see still rumoured-to-be-renewed 'Friday Night Lights' get an unlucky bounce in numbers last night.
This cost-efficient, critic-pleasing series (thanks to its unique partnering arrangement with DirecTV) has been a steady performer, except when A18-34 distracting Friday events occurred (i.e. the WATCHMEN debut, the 'Dollhouse' preem, the 'Battlestar Galactica' finale last night).
With DirecTV making FNL looking hopeful for seasons 4 and 5, is it too much to wish for a DirecTV opening their chequebook to save some of NBC's other quality-distinguished, saved-by-DVRers series: 'Lipstick Jungle', 'Life', 'Crusoe', and 'Kings'? So many further-season-worthy series sit atop the Peacock bubble this spring.

Originally posted by Marc Berman: Yes, John. Fox scheduled a phone conference with the press on Dollhouse, which means they are considering a second season.

Originally posted by John T. Folden: Marc, I'm a bit curious about something. Last week when you reported Dollhouse as grabbing 4.42M and 1.5/5 you said "But that is still a losing performance".
This week with 4.13M and a 1.5/5 you say "There could be a possibility this will return next season".
Any reason for this seeming change in position?
OK, i don't know what that is but i have a question for you Marc: can you find just a single logical reason to give this show a second season? Already FOX has huge problmes in fall, why would they bring back a show with such horrible numbers?
Try to look away from the hate you have for it. And consider yourself if a hit show like Lost for excample would have premiered its pilot after a show that gets little over 3 million viewers and is airing on fridays. Do you actually think Lost would have been where it is now
The reaseon it deserves a 2nd season is because it never got a real chance by FOX to actually succeed. Hope they will put it on a weekday after AI or Bones for that matter next season if they will renew it.
And it definetelt deserves that considering the awful treatmeat it has gotten form FOX and still pull better numbers after its lead-in and on fridays

I'm pretty sure Lost would've gotten more than 4 million viewers if it would've premiered after Stylista

How do you even know that. Any new show that gets a bad lead-in for its pilot and airs on friday will get bad viewers. And you know it
DOLLHOUSE WAS FREAKING AWESOME LAST NIGHT!! I'm surprised it was lower then last week but I'm hoping the numbers will go up because of last night! SO AMAZING !! Best one yet
I like Amanda Bynes. She should be able to help bring in the young audience.

LOL. I hope she does bring in the younger audience, because even after a visit to her IMDB page, I still have no clue who she is. What's the reason that I should have heard of her?

She acted in some movies that did rather well at the boxoffice. Not big hits though

She's a Nick star, she had her own series 'The Amanda Show' and has starred in movies, most rememberally, in my opinion, is 'Big Fat Liar.'

Ah, that's why I've never heard of her. Thanks for the answer.
