I think that Fringe and Lie to Me both have had the advantage of strong leadins like House and American Idol and airing on nights that are considered more conventional for viewers. Dollhouse builds from its weak Sarah Connor leadin and is in the top ten on Hulu and iTunes. Also, Joss Whedon shows are known to sell well on DVD. They also may want to limit the number of new shows next season. Plus, what Marc said, they may give the show a break to stay in business with Joss.
I think before FOX considers a second season of "Dollhouse" they should really branch out of Friday nights yet this season to see how the show does. Perhaps give "Dollhouse" a pre/post "Idle" timeslot and actually promote the show again. If the show bombs and doesn't increase its viewership on Friday night, obviously the show is not and cannot ever be a hit and they should just cut their losses.
I think Dollhouse has a decent shot at a second season. Fox always has holes to fill in the fall because Idol and 24 aren't around. Prison Break won't be back. Terminator SHOULDN'T be back. The network has to fill out at least five hours in the fall (Mondays @ 9pm, all of Tuesday, Wednesday @ 9pm if Lie To Me stays at 8pm, Thursday @ 9pm if Hell's Kitchen doesn't run two cycles per season, and all of Fridays). Fringe will wind up in one of those slots, and Glee will have one of those slots. Depending on how Dollhouse does the the presumably better lead-in of Prison Break... how about a Fringe/Dollhouse night?
Also, Fox doesn't have a heck of a lot of drama pilots in contention (I'd read all of them... given last night's episode of Dollhouse, I'd definitely take a second season over any of them).
That seems very ilogical cause why would anyone die to remain in business with Whedon since he hasn't produced a big hit in a decade? And that if you think Buffy was a big hit
Well, Buffy gave almost 7 billion dollars in profits to FOX. So yes, it was a hit.
Mark, ABC like I said yesterday, ABC has online for media preview the the 3rd episode of Motherhood, and a also full episodes for Samantha Who? and The Unusuals.
Makes one wonder how bad are the 1st 2 episodes, or if it is a Dirty Sexy Money type of situation, the episode numbered 2.05 was actually the firs episode aired, and the first episodes where trashed.

It's probably the merchandising that the 20th century arm of the company is looking at (and asking a favour from the broadcast arm). Whedon's shows sell insane amounts of DVDs and other crap. Firefly is still always in the top 100 sellers at Amazon despite being available for over 4 years.
I alone have bought 7 seasons of Buffy, 5 seasons of Angel, Firefly, 2 copies of Serenity, plus calendars and coffee cups and a bunch of other useless crap. How many people here own DWTS or American Idol merchandise? Whedon is like an STD; he's the gift that keeps on giving.
I'm still not loving Dollhouse yet. Hopefully last nights episode is a good as has been advertised.

It is exactly what I'm talking about. Ratings aren't impressive, but Whedon shows do incredibly well commercially and I think 20th Century Fox isn't forggeting it. And if you want some proof, wait and see when Dollhouse Season 1 on DVD comes around!

I agree that FOX has a lot of holes to fill, but I think bringing over The unit after CBS cancels it would help them more than a second season of Dollhouse.

Is there a quality difference between Dollhouse and Human Target? I think [b]Masterwork[b] could make it just because it is a trendy idea for movies and TV these days.
Is FOX still going to have baseball sprinkled all over their Fall schedule? If so, they may be better off with cheap reality series than trying to put forth a bunch of half season scripted fare.

Why didn't they keep PB then? Fringe will have a lot of problems on its own, don't see how Dollhouse could get a helping hand for that. Dollhouse won't get much better numbers even if it airs after AI. Who cares anyway? I hate FOX so i'm glad they're keeping this trainwreck around

Because Prison Break has ran its course last year already. Seriously, how long can a show about escaping from prison go on?! Be thankful Fox let the producers wrap it up and if they didn't, it's their own fault.

As long as it's good and as long as it has enough viewers. The second part was a problem unfortunately. But it still had more than Dollhouse. Interesting to see the duel un Fridays
