I wonder why this clip is so much more popular than the 400m Women's Freestyle race? I'm guessing that it is because people aren't actually watching out of the 'joy of a close competition' or 'the joy of a come from behind victory'.
Well, this budget on the Olympics certainly didn't stop them from spending on Sunday Night Football. I highly doubt the problems at NBC are due to a lack of money but instead are likely attributable to a lack of creative talent.

And that's a Billion well spent.
is it? Maybe NBC is so bad the rest of the time in the ratings because they spend a billion on this one event rather than on new show development?
Don't get me wrong, I loved the show. I own the DVD sets for all seasons of both shows [/dorktastic moment]. I watched St. Elsewhere but I don't remember that episode. I'll have to keep an eye out for it in syndication.

I have the CD...and the DVD box set for that season. In my opinion, it is one of the best single episodes of any TV series. Another of my favorites is the St. Elsewhere episode where Howie Mandell visits heaven/hell/purgatory. Both episodes are fantastic and beyond the comprehension of anyone that didn't watch all the episodes leading up to them.
If you had seen the race, it was absolutely amazing, espcially watching it LIVE. The last swimmer for the USA made up over a second to just win by a hair. Plus, the fact that he came back to beat the french swimmer who was talking all the trash about the American team.
Additionally, it brought back the gold medal in the event, after an 8 year absence, in a sport we use to dominate in.

I think CBS or ABC.. heck even FOX can do a better coverage.
I'd have to say that the ratings are a combination of the aforementioned fascination many Americans have with China, big events coming in prime-time, and August being a perfect month. I know there is some moaning going on in other parts of the world about NBC getting so many events moved to USA prime-time, but I think the billion dollars is by far the largest TV contract the IOC has.
Another factor may be the west-coast seeing these events on tape delay. NBC has taken some flak for that, but it should actually helps the prime-time ratings as opposed to the past when they have shown live coverage on the west-coast before prime-time.

Clearly you missed the point. In the other event I mentioned a swimmer came back from an even bigger deficit over the final length of the pool to win by a hair. The thing is, the propaganda machine won't push that as one of the greatest performances ever since it was the US that lost the massive lead instead of eeking out the win. Like I said, people aren't really watching that 4x100 relay clip on the internet for the 'close competition' or the 'come from behind story'. It is only super popular because the US was the victor in that race.

Last night's numbers should be interesting. on one hand it was the men's gymnastic finals and the USA managed to squeak out a bronze, however with all the scoring delays it didnt really get going til after 11 and didnt end til 1230 ET and tonight's numbers should peak with the ladies finals, next week unfortunately everything will mostly be on tape delay

No, there is no propaganda
That womens race was exciting, but nothing near as exciting as the Mens Relay.
Now, had it been the French and Italian women that were Part of the Drama before the race, then you might have gotten close.
Besides, having been around Swimming competitions for years now, relay teams are always more exciting, espcially in close races.
