Olymics are perfect for NBC since I wasn't watching anything they had on the air this summer. Now, there is something to watch on that channel. If anything I want to watch is on TV on some other channel, I'll still watch it (like Swingtown last Friday night). No one should be concerned about the Olympics effecting any show's renewal chances. Shows that are dead (The Mole and Swingtown) won't be any more dead and shows that will be back even though they are faultering (Big Brother) will still be back. Even if a 'hit' show like Wipeout has a big ratings drop, it will still be renewed because the other networks have no reason to worry about the Olympics as summer counterprogramming for 4 more years.

Its slip is perfectly explainable. It was preempted in New York and I believe some other smaller markets on Thursday, and on Sunday it was the Olympics. BB10 is fine.
I think its a little bit of everything. The Chinese culture has its appeal. People are willing to stay home and have the Olympics be their entertainment. And the economy is a factor too.
I have always said that if you want TV ratings to go up again, you need a Jimmy Carter size Recession to hit the US economy.

I wasn't really surprised by how well the opening ceremonies did, but last nights numbers are pretty spectacular. The gymnastics are always a big draw, but wow! NBC must be mad with glee over these developments. Hopefully, they will be able to drum up some interest for their new fall shows and the returning ones that were shortened (and perhaps forgotten) by the strike.

I am absolutely loving it! and I am glad its going on in August instead of the "Fall", like it is when its in the Southern hemisphere (aulstralia/Korea). it is only once every 2 years, for 17 days.
You missed one of,if not THE best swimming relay matches ever lastnight. You want Drama, that race and its surrounding issues, had it. From the French team talking trash about the US team to a great comback from the last leg to over take the Smelly frenchmen.
Besides, Don't blame the Olympics for the Mole's Ratings. It barely got 3 million last week, with no olympics in sight. The Mole just sucks in the ratings.

All the other networks are usually afraid to schedule new episodes of their summer shows, so we have to sit through 3 weeks of nothing but repeats. Even the originals that do air will be so low rated chances of a renewal will look even worse. For example, The Mole finale tonight without the Olympics would probably be its best airing to date, but since its scheduled against The Olympics, it'll be lucky to do above 3 million - very sad.
On another note, Big Brother 10 didn't do that bad - I thougt it would have done much worse. That proves it does have a VERY loyal audience.

I'm not so sure. After all, the Olympics are basically on all the time, so when will the DVR users catch up on their shows? Also, there really aren't very many shows to catch up on since most summer programming is in re-run or is fairly mindless reality gameshow type stuff where it doesn't matter if you miss some of it.

You should be embarrassed.
Why? Stating an opionion /theory on why ratings have dropped over the last 25 years?
Why? because Pres. Carter di a horrible job while in office?

Korea is in the Southern Hemisphere? Where does that put this year's games?

Is this secret code or are you just on a roll today?
I am really interested in seeing how Two and a Half Men does tonight. I think it is the ultimate test. That show has been as solid as a rock in total viewers and demo ratings all summer. Even House has never really been able to beat it. I want to see how the Olympics affect it tonight. I say the over under for Two and a Half Men tonight is 8 million. I cannot remember the last time that show got under 8 million viewers. It is going to be a good test.

For the record, Two and a Half Men isn't always guaranteed spectacular numbers. Last summer, CBS aired 4 repeats back to back of the show, and it didn't even break 8 million. Of course, this was on a Friday, but Two and a Half Men isn't some powerhouse that does great no matter where it's placed, like CSI: is, or was.

It may have dropped below 8 million in one of the out-of-timeslot airings this year (Monday 8:30pm). Still, I agree that it would seem to be one of the most resiliant shows this summer. Even if it holds up in viewers, though, it will likely take a pretty good hit in the demo.

Okay, so I can't disagree with you on that one-LOL. I still don't understand how the Olympics can manage to do over 30 million in nearly every airing. I'll watch bits and pieces of it, but I can't imagine sitting through it all day long.

I am sorry if I wasn't clear I meant it has been solid as a rock in its 9:00 time slot. It got almost 10 million last week. Even if it goes to 8 million it would be a ratings hit. It will be interesting to see how it does.
