I am really dissapointed at the numbers for Fear Itself. I love anthology shows, and I miss Masters Of Horror on Showtime, so I thought this would be a nice fix for what that was- even with less that can be aired on network tv.

They ordered 13 episodes. Will NBC even air all 13 at this point?

According to Media Life Magazine, Swingtown declined from a 2.8 to a 2.7 in the demo between half-hours and skewed heavily female (no surprise).

I guess that would put FOX as next in line for when the NBA Contact with abc is up.

Swingtown got a nice sampling but I have a feeling it is going to suffer a huge drop. Response to it wasn't that favorable. Next week will tell the story. Half hour breakdowns would be interesting.

Half hour breakdowns would also tell the story of Fear Itself. That being said, it did as well as I thought it would do, perhaps a little less in the demo than expected. At least it grew in viewers out of Last Comic Standing.

I now know why Swingtown (CBS) was delayed until the summer months - the program's plots and subplots were just ordinary, nothing shocking nor risque.

If Swingtown challenged the viewers a bit more, I'd be there every week but right now, I will not.

Although I believe Swingtown will soon receive a ratings-wise Whammy, for today, the CBS drama gets just a creative Whammy:

No, I think ABC/ESPN will keep the NBA because it needs programming for ESPN. Actually it really is an ESPN pruduction anyways.

Why wouldn't ABC be happy. The ratings are up from last year and they're getting close to $400,000 for a thirty-second ad:

Lakers-Celtics Matchup Seen Driving Strong Ad Sales for ABC
By Jon Lafayette

With a dream matchup in the NBA Finals pitting the storied Boston Celtics against Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers, ABC/ESPN Sports is expecting strong demand for ad spots in the series.

“We have a lot of interest,” said Ed Erhardt, president of ESPN and ABC Sports customer marketing and sales. While most of the network’s inventory in the game sells before the playoff matchups are set, “There’s always late money,” especially from movie studios, insurance companies and quick-serve restaurants.

Mr. Erhardt said the network is raising the ratings estimate on which it bases the price of ads to an 11 rating now that the Celtics are playing the Lakers. That should boost the $400,000 or so price tag for 30 seconds in the Finals. Ratings estimates and prices had been rising as the two marquee teams advanced in the playoffs.

Last year, ABC took a bath on the Finals when the San Antonio Spurs beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in four games and drew a record low 6.2 rating.

With the Lakers and Celtics sure to draw an audience, ABC is able to release most of the spots it had been reserving to make good advertisers in case of underdelivery of viewers.

“As the story starts to unfold, we’ll see if the series lives up to the hype. If it does we’ll have a nice little pop here,” Mr. Erhardt said.

I wasn't expecting any huge numbers for the NBA.

Fear Itself wasn't awesome. But, it was much better than most of those SciFi channel movies.
The writing was good enough to keep me into it. I'll continue to watch this.

Where are you guys coming up with that stuff. The NBA hasn't pulled in 15 million for a game 1 of a finals probably since the 90s. Last year the finals averaged a 6.2 rating. I believe this is slightly higher than that average, which bodes well for the series, as it tends to gain strength in each game -- if it goes to a game 7, then you can expect numbers for that game to be in the range you are talking about. I still see this as a success, and when final numbers remove Jimmy Kimmel's numbers from the mix, and includes its numbers outside primetime, it should show it being over 10 million...

In the battle of the competing scripted series premieres, CBS drama Swingtown kick-off with a large advantage over NBC anthology Fear Itself. Take a look:

Thursday 10 p.m.
Swingtown (CBS) – Viewers: 8.58 million (#2), A18-49: 2.8/ 8 (#2)
Fear Itself (NBC) – Viewers: 5.23 million (#3), A18-49: 2.0/ 6 (#3)

Ouch! That's not the best news I've ever heard, but about what I expected. I suppose the one positive thing that can be said, is that it grew out of it's "lead-in". I hope that NBC will see fit to air Fear Itself long enough to see how it does with more of its target audience not watching the game.

This NBA final was the most buzzed in the last decade featuring high profile temas. I expected at least 15 million. Clearly nothing can bring back NBA to its golden years popularity. Baseball final and golf majors bring more viewers than the NBA finals.
