Prime-Time Ratings:
Sunday 10/12/08

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 11.26 million, ABC: 10.77, NBC: 10.39, CBS: 9.92, CW: 830,000

-Adults 18-49:
NBC: 4.1 rating/10 share, Fox: 4.0/10, ABC: 3.8/10, CBS: 2.5/ 6, CW: 0.3/ 1

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
Football Overrun (Fox), The OT (Fox), Desperate Housewives (ABC), Sunday Night Football: New England Patriots at San Diego Chargers (NBC)

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats)
In Harm’s Way (CW), Valentine (CW), Easy Money (CW) -- absolutely horrific!

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
NBC and Fox shared leadership on this sports-driven Sunday, with Fox the most-watched network and NBC No. 1 among adults 18-49. ABC finished second in total viewers and third among adults 18-49 despite airing still dominant Desperate Housewives. CBS was fourth in both categories, followed by almost invisible the CW.

Fox’s half-hour football overrun towered past the competition at 7 p.m., with a mammoth 21.84 million viewers and an 8.2 rating/25 share among adults 18-49. That led into post-game The OT at 19.84 million viewers and a 7.6/22 in the demo at 7:30 p.m. Second in the hour was CBS’ veteran 60 Minutes (Viewers: 10.52 million; A18-49: 2.0/ 6), followed by America’s Funniest Home Videos on ABC (Viewers: 6.39 million; A18-49: 1.9/ 6), parts one and two of pre-game Football Night in American on NBC (Viewers: 4.95 million; A18-49: 1.8/ 5), and week two of In Harm’s Way on the CW (Viewers: 728,000; A18-49: 0.3/ 1). One year earlier, former non-scripted failed CW Now and Online Nation averaged 6.25 million viewers and a 0.2/ 1 in the demo. So, believe it or not, In Harm’s Way is an improvement!

It was the battle of baseball versus football on Fox and NBC, with the estimated results as follows:

Sunday Night Football (NBC): New England Patriots at San Diego Chargers - 8-11 p.m.
Viewers: 11.20 million; A18-49: 4.5/ 11

National League Baseball Championship Series (Fox): Philadelphia at Los Angeles – 8-10 p.m.
Viewers: 8.56 million; A18-49: 2.7/ 7
(Results in the 10 p.m. hour for Fox were not available)

ABC was on the 8-11 p.m. map, of course, as a result of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (Viewers: #1, 11.26 million; A18-49: #2, 3.7/ 9), the vastly improved Desperate Housewives (Viewers: #1, 15.33 million; A18-49: #1, 5.9/14) and the always amazing Brothers & Sisters (Viewers: #2, 10.09 million; A18-49: #2, 3.6/ 9), the best relationship drama since thirtysomething.

CBS’ combination of The Amazing Race (Viewers: #4, 9.17 million; A18-49: #4, 2.8/ 7), Cold Case (Viewers: #3, 10.89 million; A18-49: #3, 2.7/ 6) and The Unit (Viewers: #3, 9.12 million; A18-49: #3, 2.6/ 7) took a hit opposite the double dose of sports. But the positive news for the Eye net’s relocated The Unit is solid compatibility out of Cold Case.

Last, and very least, were week two of the CW’s scripted Valentine (Viewers: 1.01 million; A18-49: 0.4/ 1) and Easy Money (Viewers: 752,000; A18-49: 0.3/ 1), which are no better than former occupants Life Is Wild and an encore telecast of America’s Next Top Model. No one ever said programming the CW on Sunday would be an easy task for Media Rights Capital.

6.25 million! That must be a record for the CW. Wink

Valentine stayed pretty much stable, but Easy Money lost about 300,000. Not good.

-Ratings Breakdown:
Last, and very least, was week two of the Media Right Capital programming on the CW -- In Harm’s Way (0.5/ 1), Valentine (0.8/ 1) and Easy Money (0.6/ 1). Comparably, the three hours were down by a considerable 40 percent from the network’s year-ago (and already very lackluster) combination of CW Now, Online Nation, Life is Wild and an encore telecast of America’s Next Top Model. And compared to their week-ago debuts (In Harm’s Way: 0.6/ 1; Valentine: 1.0/ 1; Easy Money: 0.7/ 1 on Oct. 5), they were off, on average, by 25 percent. Ouch!

Ms Ostroff must convene an urgent meeting with her partners at MRC, and develop a workout plan to salvage these marvelous CW Sunday series. Here are some ideas:
  • Encore the first two episodes of 'Valentine' and 'Easy Money' in CW Daytime this coming Thursday and Friday, and then encore the previous weeks episode in the Easyview Sunday slot (Sunday 5-7 pm). Also, load up the first two episodes on YouTube and other free web-tv sites to get people to try out these special series.
  • Slot the '4Real' episodes at Sunday 7-8 pm instead of 'In Harm's Way'. In metered markets, '4Real' outrated 'In Harm's Way', and 'In Harm's Way' should be held until the '4Real' originals are finished.
  • Pick upcoming 'Valentine' and 'Easy Money' episodes for special airings on Tuesday and Wednesday at 9 pm to air behind '90210' and 'America's Next Top Model' to drive up the sample audience for these shows (pre-empting the low-rated 'Privileged' and '90210' encore or pushing back the 'Stylista' premiere).
  • If the above Tuesday and Wednesday at 9 pm slots are unavailable, pick up the phone and call your mentor Mr. Les Moonves at CBS, and ask him if a special preview airing of 'Valentine' and 'Easy Money' could be skedded on Saturday nights out of '48 Hours Mystery'. Mr. Moonves has done this before to help out his sister networks: 'Veronica Mars' (UPN), 'Brotherhood' and 'Dexter' (both Showtime series).
  • The MRC people, who are ad agency types, might be able to find novel cross promotion opportunities, i.e. FTD or Hallmark with 'Valentine', maybe a credit card company with 'Easy Money'.

Put those first two bad numbers behind you as unlucky launch numbers, and find a way to drive up the sampling of these series. It is in everybodys interest around the table to see these unique, critically-acclaimed series find their audience.

Good numbers for Desperate Housewives, but Brothers & Sisters lost A LOT of it's lead in. Without the lead in, I bet this show would be doing a lot worse.

Ouch! Poor, CW.
Next year (if the network hasn't collapsed by then), they really need to put more thought into their Sunday programming (and their Friday programming as well, because those comedies aren't cutting it).

Hate to see AMAZING RACE and COLD CASE take a hit but at least it truly is because of the sports and not any other factors...wayy to much sports on Network TV lately.

Speaking of TAR. Good episode...always love it when a team doesn't pay close attention to the clue and pay a price...this time it really did cost a team the entire race.

Big welcome back to SAMANTHA WHO tonight!
Many say its a time slot hit and maybe it is but its also an excellent & witty comedy and worht watching.

The retention was below average, but I think the show is better than ever.

Perhaps the CW should get rid of Sundays and try some programming on Saturday. Sundays have way to much competition for them, and I bet they could have something on Saturdays. Look at MyNetworkTV, they have good numbers for a Saturday.

Big mistake giving away the sundays.

CW should've gone with a Stylista-Privileged lineup for their sundays, with 90210 after ANTM, and a Reaper-13 pairing on tuesdays

B&S relies heavily on a big lead in. I think I remember last year when it aired with Extreme Makeover as it's lead in, it got just 8 mil. I bet if it was a self starter it'd have trouble hitting 7 mil.

Take away DH's lead-in and this show would end up with DSM kind of numbers

And isn't anyone worried about DH's numbers. Come on 15 million and below 6 in demos isn't very good at all. I'm not saying it's gonna get canceled but clearly has lost a lot of steam
