-Yesterday’s Winners: Football overrun (CBS), 60 Minutes (CBS), Sunday Night Football, Dallas vs. Washington (NBC), Desperate Housewives (ABC), Family Guy (Fox)
-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats) Nothing...the CW was in all repeats.
----------
-Ratings Breakdown: CBS and NBC shared Sunday bragging rights, with CBS the most-watched network (1.52 million more viewers than NBC) and NBC No. 1 among coveted among adults 18-49. Third overall in both categories was once dominant ABC, followed by Fox and the CW.
CBS opened the evening with an estimated half-hour minute football over-run at a mammoth 25.34 million viewers and a 7.7 rating/21 share among adults 18-49. That led into the 60 Minutes interview with our next President, Barack Obama at an also significant 24.49 million viewers and a 6.4/16 in the demo from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Next on CBS was The Amazing Race 13 (Viewers: #3, 12.25 million; A18-49: #4, 3.4/ 8 from 8:30-9:30 p.m.), followed by Cold Case (Viewers: 12.05 million; A18-49: 2.9/ 7 from 9:30-10:30 p.m.) and the first half-hour of the conclusion of a two-part episode of The Unit (Viewers: #2, 9.80 million; A18-49: #3, 2.5/ 6). Keep in mind that all results on CBS are approximate due to the late start.
NBC got plenty of mileage care of Sunday Night Football, with the Dallas vs. Washington match-up at a very healthy 17.02 million viewers (#1) and a 6.5/15 among adults 18-49 (#1) for the 8:30-11 p.m. portion of the game. Earlier in the evening on NBC was pre-game Football Night in America at 7.31 million viewers (#3) and a 2.7/ 7 among adults 18-49 (#2) in the 7 p.m. hour; and 11.81 million viewers (#2) and a 4.5/11 in the demo (#2) in the 8 p.m. half-hour (#3).
ABC came in at typical Sunday levels with its combination of NASCAR (Viewers: #2, 7.37 million; A18-49: #3, 2.4/ 6 from 7-8 p.m.), Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (Viewers: #3, 10.21 million; A18-49: #4, 3.4/ 8), Desperate Housewives (Viewers: #2, 16.55 million; A18-49: #2, 6.1/13), which featured the highly publicized fire, and Brothers & Sisters (Viewers: #3, 10.07 million; A18-49: #2, 3.7/ 9). Unfortunately, retention for Brothers & Sisters out of Desperate Housewives was lagging at 61 percent in both total viewers and adults 18-49.
Next was Fox’s combination of a repeat of King of the Hill (Viewers: #4, 3.83 million; A18-49: #4, 1.5/ 4), a repeat of The Simpsons (Viewers: #4, 5.58 million; A18-49: #3, 2.4/ 6), the regularly scheduled installments of The Simpsons (Viewers: #3, 8.52 million; A18-49: #3, 3.9/ 9) and King of the Hill (Viewers: #4, 7.04 million; A18-49: #4, 3.2/ 7), and Family Guy (Viewers: #4, 8.52 million; A18-49: #3, 4.2/ 9) and American Dad (Viewers: #4, 6.78 million; A18-49: #3, 3.2/ 7). And almost invisible the CW capped off the evening with repeats of In Harm’s Way (Viewers: 705,000; A18-49: 0.2/ 1), Valentine (Viewers: 552,000; A18-49: 0.2/ 0) and Easy Money (Viewers: 477,000; A18-49: 0.1/ 0). Add the three CW shows up, and its still a loser! Worth noting for Family Guy, of course, was the double-digit growth out of King of the Hill.
60 Minutes really scored with 44. Wow. TAR has to be considered a huge disappointment with those losses in total audience and 18-49. (About the same as Makeover without lead-in -- even factoring in overrun, etc.)
Look at those 60 Minutes numbers . If anyone doubt the media power of Obama, the proof is in the ratings. Over 25 million is amazing. It gave TAR a boost, but it's a shame that it only could keep half of its lead in. With the massive rating, TAR should have been able to keep more. Cold Case and The Unit did as expected.
Over at ABC, NASCAR overrun did better in viewers and demos than AFV usually pulls. This is something ABC should look at next fall. NASCAR overruns would set up their Sundays better than the older skewing AFV. EM:HE managed to be both Obama and football proof and hold on to most of their ratings last week. ABC has a steady player here. My guess is when Obama ended at 8:30, there was a massive half hour ratings pickup. DH is doing very well. B&S is having a horrible retention. It had an overrun, so it will be below 10 million and there's a chance that The Unit could beat it. I've said it before, something else has to be tried out in this spot.
NBC got a lot of help from football. Dallas is still a huge draw.
FOX got typical animation comedy numbers. Lower on the viewership, higher on the demos.
One must note in passing--60 Minutes lost fewer than a million viewers from the football game. With an audience that large, not a significant drop, though presumably there was a point where some people watching the game tuned out (and for myself, I didn't give a damn about the game, but had it turned on so I didn't miss a minute of the interview).
There would have probably been some people tuning out once the interview with the Obamas was over, so it'll be interesting to see the half hour #'s.
Nice as this retention was, even more interesting is that The Simpsons and Family Guy both had 8.52mil viewers--with King of the Hill sandwiched between them. FG has slightly better demo--given how much younger it is, it damn well better.
In my opinion, the TAR retention is an even worse problem than the B&S retention. It's not even 50%.

The data for this and last year are all final Nielsen numbers except for the last three nights which are preliminary data. All Sweep calculations incorporate Nielsen final numbers for primetime programming, Monday to Saturday 8-11 pm, and Sunday 7-11 pm. For daytime over-runs into primetime and primetime run-pasts into latenight (e.g. sports coverage, award shows), only the primetime portion of the program numbers have been factored in. For networks that split programs into multiple segments of sustaining and non-sustaining coverage, the rating for the sustaining portion applies to the entire program broadcast.
I agree. They need to push the race to 4:00 instead of 3:45 and it should be able to push it to 8:00. CBS and NBC is using sports to their advantage, ABC should also.

ABC should look at the Nascar for next year. Find a way to extend it to EHM.

Why should TAR have been able to keep more of its leadin? Its mostly through its season that most of these 60 minute viewers have chosen NOT to watch in the first place, at the beginning of the season.
Those numbers are fine for TAR. This is one example that the Retention level and leadin numbers are not that relevant.
The problem is most CBS viewers have chosen not to watch TAR.
60 Minutes got it's highest ratings in a while. More than 7 million new viewers came to watch. TAR couldn't capitalize on any of them. Being a show CBS viewers rejected in the first place is not an excuse for these numbers.

WHY? Those numbers last night are not any better, perhaps worse, than what AFV usually brings in. And for a LOT less of a price tag.
NASCAR is good daytime weekend programming, but most of its primetime races don't do all that well.
Just look at last nights. You had the Season Championship on the line, a tight finish for the race and some of the bigger names (Gordon, Johnson, Edwards) going for the win. Yet, it couldn't even muster up 8 million viewers?
Personally, because of the competition from the NFL, NACAR needs to find a way to end its season at least a month earlier

AFV last week's demo 1.9. NASCAR this week's demo 2.4. That is reason enough.
