Prime-Time Ratings:
Sunday 6/28/09

What follows is the fast affiliate rating results for Thursday, June 18, 2009 in the order of overall network totals and by half hour per program (in the order of ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and the CW).

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 6.71 million, NBC: 4.37, ABC: 4.30, Fox: 3.00 million, CW: 790,000

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 1.5 rating/5 share, NBC: 1.1/ 3, ABC and CBS: 1.0/ 3 each, CW: 0.2/ 1

---------------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
Nothing

-Yesterday’s Losers:
Just For Laughs (ABC), Valentine (CW), Movie: Larger Than Life (CW), Impact, part two (ABC), Merlin (NBC)

---------------

-Ratings Breakdown:
There was little to report on this final Sunday in June, with CBS the most watched network and Fox No. 1 among adults 18-49. On a boring note…

Granddaddy 60 Minutes opened the evening for CBS first in the 7 p.m. hour, with 8.55 million viewers and a 1.2 rating/4 share among adults 18-49. Next on the Eye net was a repeat of Million Dollar Password (Viewers: #1, 6.46 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.0/ 3 at 8 p.m.), followed by encore telecasts of Cold Case (Viewers: #1, 6.35 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.1/ 3) and Without a Trace (Viewers: #1, 5.46 million; A18-49: #3, 0.9/ 3) from 9-11 p.m. The least CBS could have done was brought back Without a Trace in a series of made-for movies next season.

A repeat of NBC’s Dateline at 7 p.m. (Viewers: #2, 5.01 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.0/ 4) led into two original episodes of recently introduced drama Merlin, which averaged a lackluster 4.27 million viewers and a 1.0/ 3 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m., and fared as follows by half-hour:

Merlin (NBC)
8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 4.40 million (#2), A18-49: 1.0/ 3 (#2)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 4.18 million (#3), A18-49: 1.0/ 3 (#3t)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 4.21 million (#3), A18-49: 1.0/ 3 (#3t)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 4.30 million (#2), A18-49: 1.1/ 3 (#2t)

Did anyone really think this drama would work? Capping off the evening for NBC was a repeat of Law & Order: SVU at 3.93 million viewers (#3) and a 1.1/ 3 among adults 18-49 (#2t).

Over at ABC, the conclusion of miniseries Impact had absolutely no impact, with a mere 4.43 million viewers and a 1.1/ 3 among adults 18-49 from 9-11 p.m. Take a look at the half-hour breakdown:

Impact, part two (ABC)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 4.25 million (#2), A18-49: 1.1/ 3 (#2)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 4.15 million (#3), A18-49: 1.0/ 3 (#4)
10:00 p.m. – Viewers: 4.31 million (#2), A18-49: 1.0/ 3 (#1t)
10:30 p.m. – Viewers: 5.01 million (#2), A18-49: 1.2/ 3 (#1t)

When you see an original miniseries airing in the summer, chances are it is not worth watching. Earlier in the evening on ABC was a half-hour repeat of America’s Funniest Home Videos (Viewers: #3, 4.54 million; A18-49: #1t, 1.1/ 4), hidden camera driven Just for Laughs (Viewers: #3, 4.25 million; A18-49: #4, 1.0/ 4) and a repeat of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (Viewers: #3, 3.95 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.0/ 3) from 7-9 p.m.

Elsewhere, Fox was in all repeats last night with its combination of canceled King of the Hill (Viewers: #4, 1.89 million; A18-49: #4, 0.8/ 3), American Dad (Viewers: #4, 2.28 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.1/ 4), The Simpsons (Viewers: #4, 3.29 million; A18-49: #1, 1.6/ 5), another installment of King of the Hill (Viewers: #4, 3.12 million; A18-49: #1, 1.5/ 5), Family Guy (Viewers: #4, 4.07 million; A18-49: #1, 2.0/ 6 -- top-rated show of the night in the demo) and the regularly scheduled edition of American Dad (Viewers: #4, 3.38 million; A18-49: #1, 1.7/ 5). The CW opened with a burn-off episode of former Media Rights Capital occupant Valentine (Viewers: #5, 592,000; A18-49: #5, 0.2/ 1), followed by theatrical Larger Than Life at a mere 889,000 viewers (#5) and a 0.2/ 1 in the demo (#5) from 8-10 p.m. Okay folks…time to wake up now!

Eeker That's really low for a Law and Order: SVU repeat. Lower than Saturdays even. In fact, it might be the lowest I've seen it in recent memory. Perhaps NBC is really overexposing Law and Order repeats a bit.

It wasn't a regularly scheduled repeat, so it was never going to bring in a lot of viewers.

Just For Laughs didn't air last night (at least here). I recorded it, but it was Funny Videos.

The numbers are low, but IIRC they are higher than ABC's last miniseries.
I thought Impact was a great miniseries. It's one of the best I've seen in awhile.

If ABC wants bigger ratings out of their mini-series then they need to simply promote them and not treat them as fillers.

I like the idea of WAT or any other procedural being brought back for made for TV movies like the old NBC Mystery Movies with Columbo and McCloud.

BET was the sun in the spotlight last night as they have the best awards show out there and the last fifteen minutes was priceless. They definitely did Michael proud.

Low ratings all around it seems. Good repeat numbers for CBS, although the demos are always low. The Impact numbers aren't terrible - about what The Superstars did, actually. Merlin did badly, though. NBC has 3 new series this summer, and only one, The Philanthropist, is watchable. While I applaud NBC for their original programming, it could at least be good original programming.

And those FOX animation repeats numbers are getting lower every week it seems. I don't remember The Simpsons going that low for a repeat in recent memory. And why The CW decided to bring back those cancelled MRC series is beyond me.

'Valentine', which was skedded for last night only three days ago (on Friday morning), did exceptionally well considering the complete lack of promotion and inability to include it in published and online television listings.

'Valentine's 0.2 in A18-49 equalled the demo performance of last weeks 'Reaper' encore and the last eight 'Jericho' encores in the same timeslot. As well, 'Valentine's 592,000 P2+ viewer count beat every single summer season airing of 'Jericho' (weeks 35-38), and improved by 5% upon the 'Jericho' summer season average of 563,000 P2+ viewers.

Perhaps with a little promotion, some kind notice from the more visible and influential television critics, and 'Valentine' might be able to show The CW some time period growth on Sundays from 7-8 pm.

With nary a word of advance notice or promotion, 'Valentine' quietly returned to The CW Sunday Nights last night, equalling the demo performance of 'Reaper' and 'Jericho', and beating the summer viewer average of 'Jericho'...nicely done, Aphrodite, so godessfully portrayed by Miss Jaime Murray

Yes. Dumont.

I did think it would work, I do think its working, and I continue to think it continue to work for the duration of this summer season.

A mix of second and third place finishes in viewers and demo on a steamy-hot Sunday in July is commendable.

The viewers and demo tuning in 8:00 pm are solidly in for the full two hours.

The series is brilliantly executed (completely on a creative par with other novels for television such as 'Crusoe' and 'Legend of the Seeker'), and has already been rewarded with a second season order by NBC's foreign partners.

Three cheers for Mr. Ben Silverman for daring to offer us an NBC summer season made up of mostly original programming (please please Mr. Zucker, outbid ITV for Mr. Silvermans future services). While the other networks fret and whinge about disappearing viewers but still offer up an endless stream of encores (hello CBS), the Peacock this summer is game on with a line-up that is as freshly original as what is on offer by its cable competitors.

Find out why 'Merlin' attracts a devoted audience to NBC, Sundays at 8:00 pm this summer

What I saw of Merlin was pretty stupid. What I saw of the Philanthropist was unwatchable. I haven't seen the Listener but have actually heard that's decent. It should come as no surprise that the Listener then was the show thrown to the dogs against cable's top dramas on their own sister station USA and not given a shot behind Got Talent on Tuesday or Wednesday.

You really do set the bar low for quality don't you. The shows you mentioned are some of the more pathetic I've seen in a while. They are not airing here so they have a better chance of succeeding. They're airing here because they suck. End of story.

NBC may be offering original programming, but CBS' lineup of repeats came in first in total viewers, and was only 0.1 behind in the demo. I think CBS came out on top against NBC last night.
