-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a Wednesday of mixed leadership, with CBS the most-watched network and ABC No. 1 among adults 18-49. ABC and NBC shared bragging rights from 8-9 p.m., with game show Deal or No Deal first in total viewers (12.49 million) and second among adults 18-49 (3.1 rating/9 share), and week two of ABC’s Pushing Daisies just the opposite at 10.07 million viewers (#2) and a first-place 3.6/11 in the demo. Compared to its debut one week earlier (Viewers: 13.03 million; A18-49: 4.3/13 on Oct. 3), Pushing Daisies dipped by 2.96 million viewers and 16 percent among adults 18-49. But a winning finish in the demo keeps it in the winner’s circle. As for Deal or No Deal, wasn’t watching that contestant lose everything at the end painful to witness?
Also airing in the 8 p.m, hour was CBS’ deteriorating Kid Nation (Viewers: #3, 7.01 million; A18-49: #4, 2.0/ 6), Fox comedies Back to You (Viewers: #4, 6.55 million; A18-49: #3t, 2.2/ 7) and ‘Til Death (Viewers: #4, 6.48 million; A18-49: #4, 2.4/ 7), and CW golden girl America’s Next Top Model, which hit a season high of 5.29 million viewers and a 2.5/ 7 among adults 18-49. Too bad lead-out Gossip Girl is squandering the opportunity. As for the Fox comedies, it looks like they have settled in (and the results could certainly be worse). CBS, meanwhile, should not be worrying about the location for a proposed second season of Kid Nation.
CBS’ Criminal Minds was the most-watched show from 9-10 p.m., but ABC’s Private Practice remains the show to beat among adults 18-49. NBC’s competing Bionic Woman, meanwhile, remains a vast improvement over year-ago occupant The Biggest Loser (with growth of 23 percent out of lead-in Deal or No Deal). Take a look at all three series:
Wednesday 9 p.m.
Criminal Minds (CBS)
Viewers: 14.47 million (#1), A18-49: 3.8/10 (#2t)
Private Practice (ABC)
Viewers: 12.21 million (#2), A18-49: 4.8/12 (#1)
Bionic Woman (NBC)
Viewers: 10.10 million (#3), A18-49: 3.8/10 (#2t)
Yes, it looks like my predictions about both Private Practice and Bionic Woman were incorrect.
Also airing in the 9 p.m. hour was Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares (Viewers: #4: 6.45 million; A18-49: #4, 3.0/ 8), which deserves accolades for growing by 25 percent among adults 18-49 out of ‘Til Death, and the CW’s Gossip Girl (Viewers: #5, 2.87 million; A18-49: #5, 1.3/ 3). Based on retention for Gossip Girl out of Top Model of just 54 percent in total viewers and 52 percent among adults 18-49, you have to wonder why the CW rushed into a full season renewal.
CBS’ veteran CSI: NY dominated 10 p.m., with 13.31 million viewers and a 4.0/11 among adults 18-49. Second was ABC’s Dirty Sexy Money (Viewers: 8.86 million; A18-49: 3.4/ 9), followed by NBC’s Life (Viewers: 8.14 million; A18-49: 2.8/ 8), both at series low performances. Take a look at the retention for both new dramas out of their lead-ins:
Dirty Sexy Money out of Private Practice
Viewers: 73 percent, A18-49: 71 percent
Life out of Bionic Woman
Viewers: 81 percent, A18-49: 74 percent
Both Dirty Sexy Money and Life do, however, remain an improvement over the year-ago time period occupants (ABC: The Nine, NBC: Kidnapped).
