Prime-Time Ratings:
Wednesday 9/09/09

What follows is the fast affiliate rating results for Wednesday, September 9 by network and by network per half-hour (in the order of ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and The CW):

-Total Viewers:
NBC: 8.11 million, Fox: 6.89, CBS: 6.02, ABC: 5.43, CW: 3.24

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 3.0 rating/8 share, NBC: 1.9/ 5, ABC: 1.6/ 4, CBS: 1.3/ 4, CW: 1.5/ 4

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
America’s Got Talent (NBC), Glee (Fox)

-Losing Steam:
America’s Next Top Model (CW)

-Yesterday’s Losers:
Primetime: Crime (ABC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
NBC and Fox shared leadership on this atypical Wednesday, with NBC the most-watched network and Fox No. 1 among adults 18-49. The CW finished last despite airing the two-hour season-premiere of America’s Next Top Model.

President Obama was back in primetime addressing the country, and totaling an approximate 19.29 million viewers and a 4.3 rating/13 share among adults 18-49 on the Big 3 networks from 8-9 p.m. Here are the estimated overnight results by network:

8-9 p.m.: President Obama Address to a Joint Session of Congress
NBC – Viewers: 7.31 million (#1), A18-49: 1.6 rating/5 share (#2t)
ABC – Viewers: 6.86 million (#2), A18-49: 1.6/ 5 (#2t)
CBS – Viewers: 5.12 million (#4), A18-49: 1.1/ 3 (#5)

As a reminder, overnight results for any live event are always approximate.

In an all original night, the season-premiere of the first fall edition of Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance did not impress, with 6.46 million viewers (#3) and a first-place 2.6/ 8 among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. Although the demo dominance is certainly good, the initial Wednesday 8 p.m. airing of So You Think You Can Dance in the most recent season scored a considerably stronger 8.71 million viewers and a 3.5/10 among adults 18-49 in the time period on May 27, 2009. As I have feared all along, the lack of time between seasons may not be beneficial for the dance/competition.

Fox had better news at 9 p.m. care of the series-premiere of Glee at 7.31 million viewers (#2) and a dominant 3.4/ 9 among adults 18-49. Comparably, that built from the 8:30 p.m. portion of So You Think You Can Dance (Viewers: 6.58 million; A18-49: 2.8/ 8) by 730,000 viewers and 25 percent in the demo. Although I refer to Glee as a series-premiere, keep in mind that it did preview out of American Idol on Tuesday, May 19.

Also in season-premiere news, a two-hour edition of deteriorating America’s Next Top Model on The CW averaged 3.24 million viewers (#5) and a fourth-place 1.5/ 4 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m., with the half-hour breakdown as follows:

America’s Next Top Model (CW)
8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 2.95 million (#5), A18-49: 1.3/ 4 (#4)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 3.17 million (#5), A18-49: 1.5/ 4 (#4)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 3.40 million (#5), A18-49: 1.6/ 4 (#4)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 3.45 million (#5), A18-49: 1.7/ 4 (#3)

One year earlier, America’s Next Top Model opened with 3.51 million viewers and a 1.7/ 5 in the demo on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, which makes this a loss of 270,000 viewers and 12 percent in the demo.

Elsewhere, results from 9-11 p.m. on ABC, CBS and NBC were approximate due to President Obama’s lead-in speech. With that in mind, a one-hour edition of America’s Got Talent on NBC averaged 9.68 million viewers (#12) and a 2.1/ 6 among adults 18-49 (#2) at 9 p.m. Also occupying the time period was a repeat of CBS’ Criminal Minds (Viewers: #3, 6.21 million; A18-49: #5, 1.4/ 4) and Wipeout on ABC (Viewers: #4. 5.03 million; A18-49: #3, 1.7/ 5).

At 10 p.m., a repeat of NBC’s Law & Order: SVU was first with 6.47 million viewers and a 1.6/ 4 among adults 18-49. Next was a repeat of CBS’ CSI: NY (Viewers: #2, 6.23 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.3/ 4) and summer ABC newsmagazine Primetime: Crime (Viewers: #3, 3.84 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.3/ 4).

Last night on British TV in a live telecast 'magician' Darren Brown CORRECTLY predicted the weeks lottery numbers in the correct order they came out. Incredible! I'm still shocked he has mastered a method to win the lottery.

Also Susan Boyle will be on next weeks final of AGT.

With Glee, if the 3.4 demo can hold, then FOX will be happy. Viewership is just average. However, I don't see how Glee will hold its numbers going against the ABC comedies, CM, and L&O: SVU. FOX should really consider moving it Wednesdays at 8 PM and moving SYTYCD to Wednesdays at 9 PM.

ANTM is really low. It tends to build on the season, but its 8 PM numbers aren't good at all. 9 PM was better, but that's not its regular timeslot. This is not a good sign for CW as its going to rely heavily on ANTM to keep its overall ratings up.

AGT seems low also. 2.1 in the demo? Glee really cut into the demos for this show.

Glee did well but the real test will be the next two weeks when it faces tougher competition, I reckon FOX will be patient with it but they have two midseason dramas that could get the post SYTYCD/Idol slot.

America's Next Top Model was lower than last year but considering it was up against two shows that are in its target audience, it fared alright plus it increased across two hours which is a good sign.

Great demo numbers for Glee, it will never be a big hit beacause of its limited target audience, but with that demos it doean't need to be a big hit

Pretty good for Obama as well, disappointing for SYTYCD

Analyzing the numbers of these early premiere shows is a waste of time. There is no way Glee keeps the 3.4 demo once the other networks start programming against it. You cannot analyze this or any early premiering show until the competition starts in about two weeks.

Don't agree with you this time. First of all in a couple of weeks the overall audience for the night will be bigger, and secondly beacause the other 9pm shows have a pretty different audience.

No way Glee will sustain those ratings, he novelty is wearing thin already. They might survive due to decent demos.

Great demo numbers for Glee. My wife and I watched it with two friends last night (we are all in the 18-49 demo, with 3 of the 4 in the 18-34 demo) and we all plan to watch it all season.

Why was the final performance show of the season for America's Got Talent moved from Monday to Tuesday? Instead of being in the time slot it has been all season, it will now be up against the Monday Night Football double-header for the opening Monday of the regular season...moving time slots to face severe competition seems like a strange thing to me.

I think Glee will be down to about 5 million viewers with a 2.6 rating among A18-49 in two weeks.

AGT is moved to give Leno the biggest launch possible.

Count me as one who was not really all that excited about the Glee premiere, but was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly entertained. I will continue to tune in. I think this show will definitely find an audience; a great alternative to the crime procedurals and the comedies at that hour. Different, and enjoyable.

I was thinking that could have been the only reason. I guess they don't mind sacrificing the finale ratings and throwing off a portion of their audience who will forget the date and time change and miss the show or choose football instead.

This also probably will impact the winner of the show because the 8pm performers will be seen by fewer voters than the 9pm or 9:30pm performers.

I agree with you...it is nice to see something different for a change.
