-Total Viewers:
ABC: 14.33 million, Fox: 13.19, CBS: 11.84, NBC: 8.46, CW: 3.10

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 5.4 rating/14 share, ABC and NBC: 3.6/10 each, CBS: 2.9/ 8, CW: 1.5/ 4

----------

Dancing With the Stars (ABC), NCIS (CBS), House (Fox), Law & Order: SVU (NBC)

-Honorable Mention:
Bones (Fox)

-Solid Sampling:
Cane (CBS)

-Yesterday’s Losers:
Boston Legal (ABC), The Biggest Loser (NBC)

----------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Also, since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 8.54 percent during premiere week in 2006 to 19.43 million percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC led this first Tuesday of the 2007-08 season in total viewers; House-ignited Fox was No. 1 among adults 18-49. A 90-minute edition of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars kicked-off the evening on a winning note, with a hefty 18.34 million viewers and a 4.7 rating/13 share among adults 18-49 from 8-9:30 p.m. Comparatively, a two-hour edition of Dancing With the Stars scored a similar 18.17 million viewers with a 5.2/14 in the demo on opening night Tuesday in 2006-07 (Sept. 19, 2006). That led into the 90-minute season-premiere of Boston Legal at 10.31 million viewers and a 2.6/ 7 among adults 18-49 from 9:30-11 p.m. Boston Legal opened last season with a healthier 11.28 million viewers and a 3.4/ 9 in the demo on Sept. 19, 2006. While no one should have expected Boston Legal to fully maintain the Dancing With the Stars lead-in, retention out of the last half-hour of Dancing (Viewers: 19.79 million; A18-49: 5.0/12 at 9 p.m.) of just 57 percent in viewers and 52 percent among adults 18-49 makes the legal drama a “loser” last night.

The third-season premiere of Fox drama Bones opened with a respectable 8.26 million viewers (#3) and a second-place 3.2/ 9 among adults 18-49. Compared to its second-season opener (Viewers: 8.61 million; A18-49: 2.7/ 9 on Aug. 30, 2006), that was an increase of 19 percent in the demo. Lead-out House rose to first overall from 9-10 p.m., with a hefty 18.13 million viewers and a 7.7/19 among adults 18-49. Comparably, House opened last season (on Sept. 5, 2006) with a similar 19.65 million viewers and a 7.2/20 in the demo.

Over at CBS, the underrated NCIS began season five with a healthy 13.67 million viewers (#2) and a 3.1/ 9 among adults 18-49 (#3) from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, that was right on par with its fourth season premiere (Viewers: 13.48 million; A18-49: 3.4/10 on Sept. 19, 2006). The third season opener of male-driven The Unit followed, with 10.72 million viewers (#3) and a 2.8/ 7 among adults 18-49 (#4) at 9 p.m. Compared to one year earlier (Viewers: 11.81 million; A18-49: 3.4/ 9), that was a decline of 1.09 million viewers and 18 percent in the demo. The Unit led into the debut of drama Cane, which finished second behind NBC’s Law & Order: SVU with 11.12 million viewers and a 2.9/ 8 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. One year earlier, former failed occupant Smith opened with 11.00 million viewers and a heftier 3.6/10 among adults 18-49 (and, keep in mind that it was canceled after just three episodes). Regardless, this is good sampling for Cane.

A two-hour edition of NBC’s The Biggest Loser did not impress, with just 6.64 million viewers (#4) and a 2.9/ 7 among adults 18-49 (#3t) from 8-10 p.m. Compared to one week earlier when The Biggest Loser did not have to face all original programming (Viewers: 7.94 million; A18-49: 3.4/ 9 on Sept. 18), that was a decrease of 1.3 million viewers and 15 percent in the demo. On NBC at 10 p.m. was the season-premiere of aforementioned veteran Law & Order: SVU, with a dominant 12.10 million viewers and a 4.8/13 among adults 18-49. One year earlier, Law & Order: SVU kicked-off with 14.55 million viewers and a 5.2/14 in the demo.

Over at the CW was week two of the new season of Beauty and the Geek (Viewers: #5, 2.98 million; A18-49: #5, 1.5/ 4), followed by the debut of drama Reaper at 3.22 million viewers (#5) and a 1.5/ 4 among adults 18-49 (#5) at 9 p.m. Last fall, former occupant Veronica Mars kicked-off its season (on Oct. 3, 2006) with an almost identical 3.36 million viewers and a 1.4/ 4 in the demo. While the results for Reaper are certainly nothing to crow about, growth of 240,000 out of Beauty and the Geek is worth positively noting.

Well I just finished watching the debut of CANE. I must say I really enjoyed it and look forward to future episodes . I hope others sampled it and enjoyed as much as I did . It's good to see a show about Hispanics played by Hispanic back on the airwaves. LONG live CANE. I hope CBS will give it a chance to grow .

House's opening numbers blew my expectations out of the water. After the finale last season (out of May sweeps, and without Idol as a lead-in) pulled around a 7 in the demo and 17 something million viewers, and wasn't exactly well received, I thought it would be a lower rated premiere. Well... congrats to House! Awkward episode, but intentionally so.

Reaper is better with Missy (thank you, recasting).

Definitely. 2.6 in the demo? Sigh. I think BL does better without a good lead-in, if that's even possible.

Boston Legal seems like a bad lead out for 'Dancing'. It seems to me ABC would do better if they air Cashmere Mafia or Women's Murder Club out of DWTS instead.

Thoughts?

It may go to Friday where there's little pressure for the show to perform well.

Huh...interesting ratings for both Beauty and the Geek and The Reaper. While I did watch some of the Reaper, I really did not care for it. Maybe drama/comedies are not my thing. I mean it was not bad at all. I found the pilot to be better than Gossip Girl, so I think that is saying something. But I do not know if I will be watching next week.

Peace!!

THE UNIT began this season with
almost the exact numbers it ended
last year with.

There was no mention of significant
half hour slippage by Marc for CANE.

Perhaps we are getting ahead of ourselves here, though. I mean...can anyone else add in some thoughts. Is the show actually in trouble with these numbers, or are they pretty much where the show always is. We also have no clue how the show did in the demo that ABC always says it does well with- the high income homes.

the fast nationals don't seem such positive for Cane. It skewes really old. I'm surprised abot BL's demo also. Again very old skewing.
