-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS opened the week on a winning note with its combination of How I Met Your Mother (Viewers: #2, 10.32 million; A18-49: #2, 3.9/11), recent returnee Rules of Engagement (Viewers: #2, 10.15 million; A18-49: #2, 3.6/ 9), which is a much better fit than former occupant Accidentally on Purpose, Two and a Half Men (Viewers: #1, 17.54 million; A18-49: #1, 5.8/15), The Big Bang Theory (Viewers: #1, 16.26 million; A18-49: #1, 5.8/15) and veteran CSI: Miami (Viewers: #1, 11.89 million; A18-49: #1, 3.3/10). While still a “winner,” comparably CSI: Miami was down by 2.32 million viewers and 23 percent among adults 18-49 from one year earlier (Viewers: 14.21 million; A18-49: 4.3/11 on March 9, 2009, based on the final nationals).

Next up was Fox care of old faithful House, which won the 8 p.m. hour with 12.75 million viewers and a 4.8/13 among adults 18-49, and 24 (Viewers: #3, 8.91 million; A18-49: #3, 2.8/ 8), which slid by 4.21 million viewers and 42 percent among adults 18-49 from the 8:30 p.m. portion of House (Viewers: 13.12 million; A18-49: 4.9/13). Word at the water cooler is that the quality of 24 creatively is deteriorating rapidly.

Over at ABC, the network filled the 8-10 p.m. block with the very wet The Bachelor: Jason and Molly’s Wedding, which scored a respectable 9.26 million viewers and a 2.8/ 7 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. and performed by half-hour as follows:

The Bachelor: Jason and Molly’s Wedding (ABC)
8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 8.51 million (#3), A18-49: 2.4/ 7 (#3)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 9.24 million (#3), A18-49: 2.8/ 7 (#3)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 9.22 million (#2), A18-49: 2.8/ 7 (#3)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 10.08 million (#2), A18-49: 3.0/ 8 (#2)

Next week ABC will designate the Monday 8-10 p.m. time period to a “special” edition of 20/20: Inside The Bachelor: The Stories Behind the Rose. How much more can the network possibly milk this nonsense?

ABC closed the night with sophomore Castle at a very compatible (and second-place) 9.09 million viewers and a 2.4/ 7 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. In an environment where on-the-fence series come and go, ABC was wise to give Castle a second season.

Fourth-place NBC had nothing to boast about care of its revised line-up of Chuck (Viewers: #4, 6.31 million; A18-49: #4, 2.3/ 6), the return of Trauma (Viewers: #4, 4.78 million; A18-49: #4, 1.4/ 4), which I am sure many people thought was officially canceled, and relocated Law & Order (Viewers: #3, 5.18 million; A18-49: #3, 1.5/ 5), which did not benefit from the lack of lead-in support.

Over at The CW, recently introduced drama Life Unexpected, which has a definite core fan base, moved to 8 p.m. with an uneventful (and very last-place) 1.99 million viewers and a 0.9/ 3 among adults 18-49. That led into the return of Gossip Girl at just 1.76 million viewers and a 1.0/ 3 in the demo at 9 p.m. While I understand who The CW’s target audience is (young females, of course) based on total viewers and adults 18-49 these have to be considered “losers.” But let’s keep an open mind for the young female demos.

Marc, I am shocked of how well Castle is doing. Fortunately, ABC kept this show.

Do you think Castle could beat CSI:Miami soon? I mean, obviously Horatio is not getting any better.

Have to say I'm a bit bummed at LuX's viewers, I had hoped it would be up over 2 Million once they dropped the Wednesday repeats.

We'll have to wait and see on the 18-34W demo but I'm not holding my breath that LuX will be back next season.

Gossip Girl didn't do to well either, I wonder if people knew it was back from hiatus?

With Big Bang doing so well I don't see CBS keeping it in that 930 slot past this season. It may sound crazy but I think they should move it to Thursdays at 9. Think about it, Grey's is clearly past its prime, CSI has been dropping like a rock and CBS hasn't had a comedy there in years. It may be tough going against the office but I think following survivor it could do nicely there. Then CBS has 2 open 930 slots to launch new shows and could put CSI on Wed at 8 or possibly sundays.

Poor NBC. That's actually pretty sad. Shocking that Leno still beat Letterman last night given how NBC and CBS performed in prime time

So Ostroff is really thinking about canceling OTH? Maybe she should start with GG. I'm pretty sure GG costs a lot more to produce

Why again was Trauma brought back for more episodes? NBC would be wise to reverse this night change for Law and Order and revert it back to Fridays at 10 after 2 hour Datelines. Plug the Monday 9 to 11 hole with reality.

Given that the Trista/Ryan nuptials garnered 17 million viewers compared to Jason/Molly's 9.3 million, I'd give last night's special a "Thumbs in the Middle". I'm thinking the Alphabet expected at least 12 million for this.

It could be possible down the road in total viewers, but unlikely in the demo.

LUX will be back for the same reason GG and 90210 returned, they don't have anything to replace it with.

To the people who watch this show this is not surprising because it is soooo good. You really never know who the killer is and the back and forth between nathan fillion and stana katic is just pure fun. One of the best shows on tv.

I think they were already thinking about replacing jay leno at the time. i'm surprised it's back though because i know it's one of the most expensive shows. didn't law and order do similar numbers?

I think Rules has proven itself worthy of getting a full season. I think that two and half men will probably take a break in the fall with all the star troubles (sheen in rehab and cryer's wife attempting to kill him).

i'm surprised that they televised the wedding -- isn't he the most hated bachelor ever or am i wrong -- I'm not a viewer of the show.

Just more proof that It's not leno's fault why conan's ratings were not high.

Marc-- why don't you start putting Leno on the winner's list for late night since you continually tell us how much better such and such is doing compared to the jay leno show.

I totally agree. I really love Castle. The mystery is always engaging and there is a great balance between the work stuff and Castle's family life. NK and SK play so well off each other and the supporting cast is also great. It's just a fun show and keeps improving. I'm so glad it's picking up in the ratings because I'd hate to see ABC cancel yet another of my favorite shows. I'm just getting over my bitterness about Eli Stone.

Also happy to see Jay kicking butt and taking names.
