-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS opened the week on a winning note with its combination of How I Met Your Mother (Viewers: #2, 10.32 million; A18-49: #2, 3.9/11), recent returnee Rules of Engagement (Viewers: #2, 10.15 million; A18-49: #2, 3.6/ 9), which is a much better fit than former occupant Accidentally on Purpose, Two and a Half Men (Viewers: #1, 17.54 million; A18-49: #1, 5.8/15), The Big Bang Theory (Viewers: #1, 16.26 million; A18-49: #1, 5.8/15) and veteran CSI: Miami (Viewers: #1, 11.89 million; A18-49: #1, 3.3/10). While still a “winner,” comparably CSI: Miami was down by 2.32 million viewers and 23 percent among adults 18-49 from one year earlier (Viewers: 14.21 million; A18-49: 4.3/11 on March 9, 2009, based on the final nationals).
Next up was Fox care of old faithful House, which won the 8 p.m. hour with 12.75 million viewers and a 4.8/13 among adults 18-49, and 24 (Viewers: #3, 8.91 million; A18-49: #3, 2.8/ 8), which slid by 4.21 million viewers and 42 percent among adults 18-49 from the 8:30 p.m. portion of House (Viewers: 13.12 million; A18-49: 4.9/13). Word at the water cooler is that the quality of 24 creatively is deteriorating rapidly.
Over at ABC, the network filled the 8-10 p.m. block with the very wet The Bachelor: Jason and Molly’s Wedding, which scored a respectable 9.26 million viewers and a 2.8/ 7 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. and performed by half-hour as follows:
The Bachelor: Jason and Molly’s Wedding (ABC)
8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 8.51 million (#3), A18-49: 2.4/ 7 (#3)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 9.24 million (#3), A18-49: 2.8/ 7 (#3)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 9.22 million (#2), A18-49: 2.8/ 7 (#3)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 10.08 million (#2), A18-49: 3.0/ 8 (#2)
Next week ABC will designate the Monday 8-10 p.m. time period to a “special” edition of 20/20: Inside The Bachelor: The Stories Behind the Rose. How much more can the network possibly milk this nonsense?
ABC closed the night with sophomore Castle at a very compatible (and second-place) 9.09 million viewers and a 2.4/ 7 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. In an environment where on-the-fence series come and go, ABC was wise to give Castle a second season.
Fourth-place NBC had nothing to boast about care of its revised line-up of Chuck (Viewers: #4, 6.31 million; A18-49: #4, 2.3/ 6), the return of Trauma (Viewers: #4, 4.78 million; A18-49: #4, 1.4/ 4), which I am sure many people thought was officially canceled, and relocated Law & Order (Viewers: #3, 5.18 million; A18-49: #3, 1.5/ 5), which did not benefit from the lack of lead-in support.
Over at The CW, recently introduced drama Life Unexpected, which has a definite core fan base, moved to 8 p.m. with an uneventful (and very last-place) 1.99 million viewers and a 0.9/ 3 among adults 18-49. That led into the return of Gossip Girl at just 1.76 million viewers and a 1.0/ 3 in the demo at 9 p.m. While I understand who The CW’s target audience is (young females, of course) based on total viewers and adults 18-49 these have to be considered “losers.” But let’s keep an open mind for the young female demos.
