They should have held off episodes until February or next week when there is no football -- i mean 36 million just from CBS alone is a lot of competition.
why again shouldn't they have aired the mentalist? It gives the show more exposure and didn't do badly.

What a disaster for DH. i Mean barely 13 millions for the 100th episodes is simply awful no matter the competition
I can't believe that american idol is still gonna air tomorrow opposite an obama inauguration special -- it's kinda unamerican. Didn't AI air 2 hour episodes for the past few years for at least 2 or 3 weeks?
Also, for all who don't know -- Lost starts airing this wed.
Hmmmm. I would think the freedom of choosing whether to watch, or broadcast, endless coverage of the inaugeration is very American indeed. Thiose wanting more Obama will be able to find lots of him.
As for me, I'll be jetting to Vegas so Mr. Obama and Mr. Seacrest will both have to proceed without me.

And the debate rages on about CBS stragedy airing The Mentalist after football . ( I did expect to see TM having better rating/demos ) I agree not a strong episode but still way better than any episode The Unit would have aired . Why is The Unit still around ? I think TM did good not great but even its above average rating/demos easily beats out anything The Unit does in that timeslot
Believe it or not, most people don't give a crap about the over-hyped inauguration flair. Doesn't the real thing happen at noon anyway? I believe Fox affiliates have the option of live coverage via Fox News then if they want. I have nothing original I even care to view on Tuesday.

I bet the Unit would've done a lot better than its season average post-NFL last night, perhaps not as well as the Mentalist, but it could've done 12 million easily.

3. The Mentalist is clearly not a hit and people need to stop calling it such. It may be the biggest hit of this season, but that just goes as proof that this season has been an overall failure. TM will keep pulling in the elderly CBS crowd and be a perfect fit for them on Tuesdays, but it isn't going to 'breal out' when no one else wants to sample it...or they did sample it and rejected the smarmy Bush impersonator.
Have you become the new pisher? You must be joking, cause i doubt you can say such stupid things being serious. TM is not a hit it's a monster hit by these days standards. The fact that hte show itself is rather bad it's a another matter. But i'm afraid the numbers don't lie. It's the number one scripted show, of course it's a hit
Its a pretty sizable hit among today's standards, one of the highest rated in total viewers but for advertisers its only a modest hit. It will never make the money, at least in first run, as the likes of Lost, Housewives, and Greys, that is unless it really picks up demographically.

Nope !! Got to disagree mushu.. The old Unit yes but this new Unit no !
A special Sunday night airing of CBS' "The Mentalist" benefited from its AFC Championship Game lead-in and drew its highest rating yet.
"Mentalist" delivered 16.4 million viewers and a 4.6 adults 18-49 rating, according to time-period adjusted fast nationals special ordered by CBS.
With last night's Baltimore vs. Pittsburgh game seen by about 40.6 million and had a 14.7 rating, the network was likely hoping for "The Mentalist" to gain a greater overall viewership bump. While falling short of a new record among total viewers, the adult demo rating edges out the freshman procedural hit’s previous high. "Mentalist" was down slightly compared with the "Without a Trace" episode that aired after 2007's AFC nail-biter between Patriots and the Colts.
Chief competitor ABC aired "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (8.6 million, 2.9/7), a series-low 100th episode of "Desperate Housewives" (13 million, 4.6/10) and "Brothers & Sisters" (8.9 million, 2.8/7).

Oh yes the Mentalist is a hit. And rightfully but i agree last nights episode was not the best
Also how about that crazy helmet to helmet tackle. Crazy stuff. But 2 awesome football games indeed
I would suspect that AI aired 4 years ago for the 2nd Bush inauguration, but no one complained then.

It's not a question of choice, it's a question of respect.
Yes, I suppose the North Koreans put forward much he same argument whenit comes to showing proper "respect" for Dear Leader.
BTW, I imagine anyone who believes the nets, should be expected give up revenue to offer up coverage of a news event that will have been finished 8 hours previously, will be taking unpaid day off tomorrow. To show respect.

See that proves a point. Maybe the show does not get "hit" viewers numbers, but it is a huge hit among advertisers. I see it mentioned in advertising analysis articles all the time. I bet advertisers would rather advertise on The Office over The Mentalist.
The Office is not the massive hit that CSI, Greys, or Desperate Housewives is, but it is as big of a hit as the Mentalist based alone on the fact that it can pull tons of young adults, a demographic that is becoming increasingly hard to reach. I wouldn't really call any of the shows on the CW hits, but that network has the chance to survive if they can continue to pull in better 18-34 demos than many of the CBS shows. Gossip Girl doubles the 18-34 viewers of Old Christine and probably costs a fraction to produce resulting in some pretty favorable advertising prices. To me, a hit is just as much a show that makes money as a show that pulls in large chunks of viewers.

And the networks will be respecting him by airing the inauguration live at midday.
