-Ratings Breakdown:
It was a typical Thursday of mixed leadership, with CBS the most-watched network (with 3.97 million more viewers than ABC) and ABC first among adults 18-49 (six percent above CBS). CBS opened the night the dominant force at 8 p.m., with Survivor: Samoa at 12.71 million viewers and a 3.7 rating/10 share among adults 18-49. If you did not see Survivor last night, you missed one of the greatest blindsides in the history of the show. Amazing how fresh this long-running reality/competition remains.

Second at 8 p.m. was ABC’s FlashForward (Viewers: 8.47 million; A18-49: 2.6/ 7), but the slowly declining freshman entry barely beat Fox’s competing Bones (Viewers: #3, 8.46 million; A18-49: #3, 2.5/ 7). Also in the time period were struggling NBC sitcoms Community (Viewers: #4, 5.64 million; A18-49: #4, 2.3/ 6) and Parks and Recreation (Viewers: #4, 4.93 million; A18-49: #4, 2.2/ 6), and CW hit The Vampire Diaries (Viewers: #5, 4.21 million; A18-49: #5, 2.0/ 5). Comparably, The Vampire Diaries finished first in the hour among women 18-34 (3.1/9), females 12-34 (2.8/9) and female teens (2.1/8); and second among adults 18-34 (2.3/7) and persons 12-34 (2.1/7).

Moving to 9 p.m., leadership was split between CBS’ CSI and Grey’s Anatomy on ABC as follows:

Thursday 9 p.m.
CSI (CBS) – Viewers: 15.14 million (#1), A18-49: 3.4/ 9 (#2t)
Grey’s Anatomy (ABC) – Viewers: 13.62 million (#2), A18-49: 5.0/13 (#1)

Also worthy of positive mention was NBC’s The Office, with 7.94 million viewers (#3) and a second-place 3.9/10 among adults 18-49 in the 9 p.m. half-hour despite what I personally think was one of the worst episodes of the sitcom to-date. Lead-out 30 Rock dipped to 5.94 million viewers (#3) and a 2.9/ 7 among adults 18-49 (#3). No matter how many Emmys 30 Rock wins, it will never be a mass appeal hit.

Rounding off the 9 p.m. hour was Fox’s Fringe (Viewers: #4, 4.95 million; A18-49: #4, 1.7/ 4), which will pick up some of its lost audience via DVR usage, and Supernatural on The CW (Viewers: #5, 2.71 million; A18-49: 1.2/ 3), which also scores among the DVR crowd.

At 10 p.m., CBS’ The Mentalist and ABC’s Private Practice also shared the top spot as follows:

Thursday 10 p.m.
The Mentalist (CBS) – Viewers: 15.37 million (#1), A18-49: 3.4/10 (#2)
Private Practice (ABC) – Viewers: 9.18 million (#2), A18-49: 3.5/10 (#1)

In the distant No. 3 spot was NBC clinker The Jay Leno Show at 4.72 million viewers and a 1.6/ 5 in the demo. I don’t care how low the expectations were, this was still disappointing.

Flash forward is starting to tank. abc would be better off moving this show to wed. at 8 where it would get better traction than its 8'oclock comedies.

Fringe is on and Supernatural is down again *sigh* It's obvious that Fringe is killing SPN - last week it wasn't on and even against football, SPN went up to 2.92 mil. So, Fringe's killing SPN but dying in the process. 1.7 demo for a Fox show on Thursday? Wow!

terrible numbers for Fringe after all that promotion during baseball. The show was losing audience last year so it is time to put it out of its misery.

Wow FF is really not retaining its viewers from week to week. I really loved the episode last night but I think viewers these days suffer from "Lost-itis", if they don't get answers right away, they tend to lose interest pretty quickly. This does not bode well for V in my opinion although V is a much simpler show in terms of concept ie good vs bad and not all this philosophical fate and destiny concept. I do hope FF stabilizes because this is not the kind of show that casual viewers will come back to unfortunately.

V is less a mystery so there are less answers to be given. If anything, people complained that we got too much, too fast.

FF is suffering a little, but that may be good in the long run as I still say this is best as a one-season show and I think that could be what will happen.

I think the FF ep last nite was a mild improvement over previous eps but I think over the past month negative perceptions of this show have started to harden and we are and probably will continue to see that affect the ratings.

I don't think the issue here is Lost-itis. As several of us posted last week, these characters are not yet interesting enough for us to care about whether or not they get divorced, pregnant, drunk, or meet their end.

Last nite was a step in the right direction as the show had a bit more of a personal touch, and the overriding mystery is still provocative enough, but who are the compelling characters in this? That's the problem, in my view.

OK, Fringe is basically dead. No way to revive it i'm afraid. Preety much the same for FF, it's bleeding viewers week after week, can't see those coming back. VD is phenom for CW. Miles ahead of all the other CW shows.

OK, the demos tell a different story but CSI handily beating GA in live viewing numbers proves CSI is far from dead. Great pairing with TM

Boy FF is really going down, it's now struggling to even beat Bones in the demo and this week there was no baseball as competition.

Terrible night for Fox. I'm sure they were hoping for another WS game lol! Unfortunately Fringe plummeted, only .1 better in demo than Jay Leno? Fox needs to get it out of that slot by midseason if they wish to protect it. Now it's probably doing no better than KN last year.

Excellent, excellent episode of Grey's last night.

Looks like V will be ABC's #1 show in viewers and demo this week.

Survivor is really rebounding this season. At the beginning of the season I feared we might see it dip below 10 million viewers, but the uptick has been impressive in both viewers and demo. Great to see.

I wish they'd move P&R after The Office for a few weeks. The improvement this season over last is almost unprecedented. Exposing it to more viewers would definitely help it long-term because it would earn back a lot of viewers who gave up on it last spring.

LOL They're not in the same timeslot but it sure did better in the demo! I'm not surprised, it's an awesome show, much more enjoyable than Fringe. It'd do like 8 million viewers on another network for sure.

CW beats FOX in the 18-34 demo, while being behind CBS by only 0.3. SF stuff if you ask me

Supernatural was SO awesome last night! So creative! I think every tv fan would enjoy the episode even if they dislike the show. The theme song, the CSI bit with the yeeeahhh and the Knight Rider theme and all the references, it was so much fun! Very well done too. One of my favourite episodes of 2009. Wink
