Prime-Time Ratings
Friday 6/27/08

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 5.82 million, NBC: 5.52, CW: 4.34, ABC: 3.75, Fox: 3.28

-Adults 18-49:
NBC: 1.5 rating/5 share, CW: 1.4/ 5, CBS and Fox: 1.2/ 5 each, ABC: 1.1/ 4

--------------------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 13 percent at this same point last year to approximately 23 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Friday’s Winners:
Nothing

-Friday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
Dance Machine (ABC), Movie: XXX – State of the Union, Duel (ABC), 20/20 (ABC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
There was little to say, as usual, on this uneventful summer Friday. CBS was first overall in households and total viewers; NBC was No. 1 among adults 18-49; and the five networks combined totaled a mere 29 share of the audience.

In series-premiere news, ABC reality/competition Dance Machine limped out of the gate with 3.76 million viewers (#4) and a last-place 1.0 rating.4 share among adults 18-49 from 8-9 p.m. Why ABC needed another non-scripted dance themed series is beyond me.

Dance Machine led into the return of flop game show Duel (Viewers: #5, 3.27 million; A18-49: #5: 1.0/ 4) and 20/20 (Viewers: #3, 4.24 million; A18-49: #3, 1.3/ 5) from 9-11 p.m.

In an all encore night, CBS opened with Ghost Whisperer (Viewers: #1, 5.58 million; A18-49: #1t, 1.4/ 6 at 8 p.m.), followed by two repeats of Numb3rs as follows:

Numb3rs R (CBS)
9:00 p.m. Viewers: 5.64 million (#1), A18-49: 1.1/ 4 (#1)
10:00 p.m. Viewers: 6.23 million (#2), A18-49: 1.3/ 5 (#2)

NBC kicked-off with two repeats of Most Outrageous Moments (Viewers: #3, avg. 4.53 million; A18-49: #3, avg. 1.2/ 5 from 8-9 p.m.), followed by a two-hour edition of overused Dateline at 6.02 million viewers (#1) and a 1.6/ 6 among adults 18-49 (#1) from 9-11 p.m.

Soon-to-depart Friday Night Smackdown! on the CW finished third overall in total viewers (4.34 million) and second among adults 18-49 (1.4/ 5). And theatrical XXX – State of the Union capped off the evening for Fox with 3.28 million viewers (#5) and a 1.2/ 5 in the demo (#3t).

To whet your appetite for the fall, here is what you will be seeing on Fridays beginning in September:

ABC
8:00 p.m. Wife Swap (new day and time)
9:00 p.m. Supernanny (new day)
10:00 p.m. 20/20

CBS
8:00 p.m. Ghost Whisperer
9:00 p.m. The Ex List (new)
10:00 p.m. Numb3rs

NBC
8:00 p.m. Crusoe (new)
9:00 p.m. America’s Toughest Jobs (new)
10:00 p.m. Life (new day)

Fox
8:00 p.m. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (new day)
9:00 p.m. Don’t Forget the Lyrics (new day)

CW
8:00 p.m. Everybody Hates Chris (new day)
8:30 p.m. The Game (new day and time)
9:00 p.m. America’s Next Top Model (R, new day)

I bet ABC is so happy Duel came back again. Razzer Just cancel it already. It isn't working and never will.

FOX isn't even trying. The movies aren't working and they really don't care.

CW finally is competitive at least one night and they are letting Smackdown go. There is no way ANTM encores/The Game/Everybody Hates Chris is going to do even half the numbers Smackdown does.

How is Dateline overused when it is the top rated show of the evening? In my opinion, NBC is correct in using it there and the other places to fill in the gaps. It works for NBC. If there is a winner on Friday, it is Dateline.

I'm still amazed at how well repeats of Most Outrageous Moments does on Fridays. For a dirt cheap show of just rehashed clips, most of which you've seen before, it does very well.

How long will the Alphabet endure with a Friday line-up producing overall numbers this low?

They might want to look at picking up some ABC FAMILY (Middleman) encores or even over to SOAPNET (General Hospital: Night Shift 2).

I dare say even burnoffs of Cavemen and Crumbs would fare better in the 8-10 pm slot than Dance Machine and Duel.

A question for ABC: how low can you go?

MVP bombed on ABC and I don't see GHNS2 doing any better than MVP or the current numbers of Dance Machine or Duel.

I still say ABC should program a retro TGIF night on Fridays or do one with Disney Channel shows. I could sit through Full House, Family Matters, Mr. Belvedere, and Perfect strangers again.

Soon-to-depart-to-MyNetworkTV WWE Smackdown is going to leave an ratings black hole for The CW on Fridays.

Ever since The CW cancelled this series, and MNT picked it up for next fall, I've been doing a calculation where the WWE numbers are deducted from The CW's weekly average and added to MNT's weekly average (in substitution for the MyFridayMovie number). Over the course of the regular season, The CW still topped MNT in demo 31 of 35 weeks and in viewers 26 of 35 weeks of the regular season. Here is how the two nets would have fared in fall, winter and spring with the WWE adjustment:

Fall (weeks 1-13)
CW-WWE: 1.03 A18-49, 2.383 million viewers
MNT+WWE: 0.56 A18-49, 1.603 million viewers

Winter (weeks 14-26)
CW-WWE: 0.73 A18-49, 1.759 million viewers
MNT+WWE: 0.64 A18-49, 1.790 million viewers

Spring (weeks 27-35)
CW-WWE: 0.88 A18-49, 2.072 million viewers
MNT+WWE: 0.55 A18-49, 1.583 million viewers

But since the summer started, if you add the WWE numbers to MNT's weekly average, then MNT would now be attracting more A18-49 and viewers in each of the first four weeks of this summer:

Summer (4 weeks so far)
CW-WWE: 0.50 A18-49, 1.337 million viewers
MNT+WWE: 0.58 A18-49, 1.595 million viewers

When WWE Smackdown moves over to MNT this coming fall and joins some highly anticipated new programs (Magic Secrets on Monday, The Tony Rock Project and Mr. Arsenio Hall's "Funniest Moments" on Wednesday), we could see a return to the days where CW and MNT are jockeying for fifth place amongst the English networks just like the days of yesteryear when WB and UPN vied for fifth.

And that will be a remarkable achievement for News Corporation, building up a brand new network from the discards of the UPN-WB merger into a fifth place contender in just a little over two years.

Dance Machine and Duel may very well get pulled in the coming weeks and moved to ABC Family or somewhere else for burnoff. I'm not sure why ABC simply didn't just bench both and forget they ever aired. They should move the Wife Swap and Supernanny repeats to Fridays and bring back encores of the Wed. dramas for the summer. No ratings wouldn't be good but neither are these shows and we know that the Wed. shows need exposure.

Dateline is less overused than the Law and Orders or the crime drama repeats on CBS.

The CW will most certainly miss their highest rated series in terms of total viewers. Sure it didn't make much money but the new lineup will in the end make even less. I don't see Sunday nights making squat for cash this year and Fridays won't gain with the new lineup.

The two current Friday shows will likely dip into 2 million viewer territory in coming weeks. I would bet Cavemen and Crumbs would do no worse.

I don't understand why they aren't planning to do that soon.

I would've done it about last week so all the eps could've aired this summer and none would've had to air against the Olympics (instead movies and specials could've aired that week). Treat it like another season almost. When they moved Greys to Thursday they hyped it like new eps and the move worked brilliantly. But these are chimps were dealing with.

All those shows coming on the fall fridays and i only watch two of them. oh and they both come on at the same time. Looks like NBC is trying to kill Life putting it against the steadiest show on Fridays.

Crusoe could be interesting

I believe both Dance Machine and Duel end their series run on July 25. Both series are burn-offs. From what I've gathered, ABC is giving Dance Machine little promotion and has no expecation for it.
