yesterday's game did way better than last year and incredibly better than two years ago (43 and 35 millions respectively)
100 million might be possible
I expect the Super Bowl to crack 100 million with room to spare. Last night's game was an instant classic (albeit a depressing one for me) and with the Patriots going for an undefeated season, I expect the ratings to hit an all-time high.
So You are saying there were people that would not watch the Super Bowl at all, but will now because there is an undefeated team?
The Super Bowl is THE BIG TV Event of the year. It doesn't need anything extra to attract MORe viewers. People will watch the game who never watch football the rest of the year.
I don't agree, and what you say proves my point. The Super Bowl is not watched only by football fans, so many of the non-football fans watch depending on various factors. And buzz certinly is one of those factors. Also people are crazly atracted by records, and a team that might win all matches in a season might be a lifetime record. You might actually wanna see that knowing it's highly unlikely it'll happen again
So, there are people who were not going to join the 90-100 million people who watch the Super bowl on a regular basis, but read, somewhere, that New England is going for a perfect season and they said... "Hey, I never watch football, or even the Super Bowl, but I wanna watch that team get a perfect season."
If this was Basketball or Baseball or even Hockey, a record or milestone would matter and increase rattings. But the Super Bowl is SO BIG an event that the record is not that big of a deal in attract MORE viewers.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this.
Well i'm one of those. As i said i don't like football but i watched the last couple of NE games especially for that reason. And when the numbers for the SB will come in you'll see i'm not the only one.
90 millions out of 250 means not every american watches the SB usually so there are plenty left that will tune in only for this game. Trust me the perfect season gimmick will be played a lot in the following days, and that will bring a lot of viewers

I think EM:HE was the big loser. It was MUCH less in line with its season average than TAR was (which was about a 3.5 vs. EM:HE's 4.0+).
I disagree -- EM:HE beat the Amazing Race head on [apply directly to the forehead] and built significantly in its second hour -- plus, it was not a season finale. TAR was really disappointing for a season finale, and CBS should have known better than to schedule it opposite the NFC Championship.
BTW, if these NFL playoff ratings don't reinforce my position that ABC made a huge mistake be getting out of the NFL business nothing will. 50 million viewers! 50 million!!
how much does the nfl cost fox? and how much revenue does it generate?

I can get you the stats, but the bottom line is, it doesn't matter. Before Fox got NFL football, they were considered a "minor network" -- just a tad better than the CW is today. The NFL made them competitive, and allowed exposure for their other shows, which eventually led to their recent success. NFL is considered a "loss leader" by all the boradcast networks -- strictly speaking, they usually lose money on it, but it allows them to brings up their ratings for all their other shows, therefore each network that is left out is begging to buy back in the next time the contracts are up for negotiation. Let me dig up my old post with some of those details.

If this Wiki page is correct, then the networks are not making direct money at all from the NFL. The key with the NFL is to get an audience to see the promos for your other shows. Given how female skewing ABC is, I don't think they would get a good return on their dollar with NFL watchers seeing their other show promos.

Your first point is true, but the other point about ABC being female focus thus it would not help them is precisely the point i'm arguing. ABC narrowed down their focus too much by focusing only on one gender. Focusing on 18-49 or even 18-34 is fine, but focusing only on women was a mistake, and precisely the mistake I'm arguing that they correct -- in addition to bringing the NFL back, they should couple that would broader reaching shows, like LOST, or even EM:HE; as we're now seeing, ABC has oversatursated itself with relationship dramas.

I agree with you on the regular season games getting a boost because of the Patriots streak. But the Super Bowl has become more than just another football game or championship game. its an American Event.
non-football fans are already watching the game because it is an event. If they are not already watching it, on a yearly basis, the perfect season is not going to change that viewer.
Now, having said that, I do think the ratings may go up and be one of the best of all times. But that has to do more with NYG being in the game than anything else. But it will not be leaps and bounds higher than any other game.
And... if next years game had the Cowyboys vs the Jets or Pittsburg, it would be the all time SB king.

I don't know about that. If ABC still had the MNF package, it would never get a Conference Championship game. It would only have the first Saturday Wild Card games, and be done.
Plus, ABC still has ESPN promoting its primetime schedule during its broadcast of the MNF games.
As long as ABC schedules shows that people want to watch, it really is a win-win situation for Disney. They get the platform of the NFL to promote both ABC programs and ESPN programs, plus they get to air 3 more hours of NON-NFL Primetime programming on ABC.
Plus the fact that ESPN gets atleast 50 cents per subscriber, per month, from the Sat. & Cable companies, directly because of its NFL Package.

Did ESPN raise its rates 50 cents when they got NFL or are you thinking that there would be a cable/dish system somewhere that wouldn't carry ESPN if it didn't have the NFL game?

IIRC, when ESPN took the whole Sunday Night Package, a while back, they asked the Cable companies (and I assume Dish companies) to chip in 50 cents per subscriber to help out. In return, the providers got local commercial time. I doubt that fee has been recended by ESPN. I believe currently ESPN gets a total of $3 per subscriber, per month. Thats about $300 million per month.
That I do know because of the current local battle between the cable companies here and the Big Ten Network (who wants $1.50 per subscriuber and placed on standard cable Tier - Below channel 70). That would make it the 2nd most expensive channel in the market, behind ESPN.
Looks Like Terminator:SCC is a 9-10 million viewer show
From Marc's Newsletter - "Over at Fox, the second Monday telecast (and third episode overall) of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles scored a respectable 6.0/ 9 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, that built from lead-in Prison Break (#3: 4.7/ 7 at 8 p.m.) by 28 percent. "
T:SCC should be in the 9-10 million viewer range, based on the overnight numbers.
