Prime-Time Ratings
Saturday 6/21/08

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 4.75 million, CBS: 4.70, NBC: 4.47, ABC: 3.45

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 1.7 rating/7 share, NBC: 1.1/ 4, ABC: 0.9/ 3, CBS: 0.8/ 3

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since the level of DVR penetration has increased from 13 percent at this same point last year to approximately 23 percent at present, the overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Saturday’s Winners:
Nothing.

-Saturday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
The night overall.

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Considering the top-rated network could not even crack 5-million viewers, there is very little to say about Saturday. On that note, Fox was the most-watched network with 4.75 million viewers, and No. 1 among adults 18-49 with an average 1.7 rating/7 share in the demo. The normal double-dose of Fox’s Cops opened the evening with an average 4.31 million viewers (#2) and a 1.7/ 7 among adults 18-49 (#1) from 8-9 p.m., followed by another old faithful, America’s Most Wanted, at 5.19 million viewers (#1) and an also first-place 1.8/ 7 in the demo.

CBS aired a repeat of NCIS at 8 p.m. (Viewers: #1: 4.85 million; A18-49: #5: 0.6/ 3), followed by a repeat of The Unit (Viewers: #3: 3.82 million; A18-49: #4: 0.7/ 2) ,and 48 Hours Mystery (Viewers: #1: 5.44 million; A18-49: #1, 1.2/ 5) from 9-11 p.m. NBC ran two-hour special Olympic Trials: Gymnastics, part 1 from 8-10 p.m. (Viewers: #2, 4.51 million; A18-49: #2, 1.1/ 5), followed by a repeat of Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Viewers: #2: 4.38 million; A18-49: #2: 1.1/ 4) at 10 p.m.

ABC capped off the evening with a repeat of Camp Rock at 3.45 million viewers (#4) and a 0.9/ 3 among adults 18-49 (#3) from 8-11 p.m. For the stellar results for the debut of Camp Rock on Disney Channel one night earlier, see Ratings Box below.

Marc, CBS aired a repeat of The Unit at 9 last night, not Criminal Minds. Instead, Criminal Minds will air tonight.

CBS should think about using the EliteXC Fighting more than once a quarter. Perhaps a fight every other week is needed. It's viewers numbers are roughly the same as what we are seeing from last night, but the demo is stronger than anything else that airs on the night.

I think ABC was aiming for a different audience then the general 18-49 demo. And based on the type of commercials that aired during the broadcast, they succeeded in delivering. From variety.com:

Pic placed third among the broadcast nets in adults 18-49 (roughly 0.9/3) and fourth in total viewers but dominated among kids 6-11 (prelim 3.1 rating) and tweens 9-14 (3.2 rating) -- in that demo, the best summer delivery on broadcast television for an entertainment program in six years (since NBC replayed "Men in Black" in July 2002).

ABC has been wise to turn Saturdays over to Wonderful World of Disney, and zero in on the younger demographics for this night. Although they are not pulling in as many 18+ viewers, so what. With K2-11 and T12-27 numbers like those quoted by Zedman2, their salespeople will have no problem selling the Saturday network airtime this summer.

Another newsworthy item comes from pavanbadal over at sitcomsonline.com who reports that in the numbers for the first four days of this current week, The CW and MyNetworkTV were tied in the young adult demographic, and are separated by only 9,000 viewers in P2+:

5th. The CW 0.5 A18-49, 1.48 million viewers
5th. MyNetworkTV 0.5 A18-49, 1.39 million viewers

Of course the Friday Smackdown numbers will put MyNetworkTV back into fifth place, but it is most noteworthy that this is the very first time in 90 weeks of going head-to-head that MyNetworkTV and The CW have been tied based on their Monday to Thursday line-up, and it is a sign that the networks are now operating at parity with respect to young adults and viewers if you remove Smackdown from The CW numbers. WWE Smackdown moves over to MyNetworkTV in October, and unless The CW can find a line-up that repeats better in the summers (and that is unlikely), by this time next summer, MyNetworkTV will comfortably be the fifth-place network for English broadcasters.
