Prime-Time Ratings:
Wednesday 1/24/07

The following results are based on the fast national ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 33.56 million, CBS: 9.25, NBC: 8.21, ABC: 5.08, CW: 2.67

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 13.9 rating/34 share, NBC: 2.6/ 7, CBS: 2.5/ 6, ABC: 1.8/ 5, CW: 1.1/ 3
----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
American Idol (Fox), CSI: NY (CBS)

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
George Lopez (ABC), According to Jim (ABC), Friday Night Lights (NBC), Armed & Famous (CBS), The Knights of Prosperity (ABC), In Case of Emergency (ABC), One Tree Hill (CW)

-Ratings Breakdown:
Another two-hour edition of Fox’s American Idol stood head and shoulders above the rest, with a mammoth 33.56 million viewers and a 13.9 rating/34 share among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. Comparatively, that beat the four competing networks combined by 11.10 million viewers and 99 percent among adults 18-49! Here is the half-hour breakdown:

American Idol
8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 27.72 million, A18-49: 11.1/30
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 33.00 million, A18-49: 13.3/33
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 36.88 million, A18-49: 15.5/37
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 36.64 million, A18-49: 15.8/37

Worth repeating about American Idol from this morning’s overnight analysis on The Programming Insider:

As for the show itself, I was just wondering: who was that as the guest judge? Was it Carol Bayer Sager or Alexis Morell Carrington Colby Dexter on Dynasty? Come on now – didn’t she look just like her?

Opposite the first hour of the American Idol steamroller (these poor shows!) were ABC comedies George Lopez (season premiere – Viewers: #2, 6.13 million, A18-49: #2, 1.9/ 5) and According To Jim (Viewers: #2, 6.24 million, A18-49: #2, 2.1/ 5); NBC’s Friday Night Lights (Viewers: #3, 5.91 million; A18-49: #3, 1.9/ 5); CBS’ ridiculous Armed & Famous (Viewers: #4, 4.75 million; A18-49: #4, 1.4/ 4); and the CW’s Beauty and the Geek (Viewers: #5, 3.07 million; Adults 18-49: #5, 1.3/ 3). Of note for Beauty and the Geek, however, was a second-place finish in adults 18-34 (1.6/ 5) and women 18-34 (2.0/ 5). As for Armed & Famous, there is only one observation: Oy!

At 9 p.m., NBC and CBS managed to get some traction opposite American Idol courtesy of Deal or No Deal and a repeat of Criminal Intent. Take a look:

Wednesday 9 p.m.
Deal or No Deal (NBC)
Viewers: 10.05 million (#2), A18-49: 2.7/ 6 (#2)

Criminal Intent R (CBS)
Viewers: 9.60 million (#3), A18-49: 2.3/ 5 (#3)

Unfortunately, there was not much audience left for ABC sitcoms The Knights of Prosperity (Viewers: #4, 3.58 million; A18-49: #4, 1.4/ 3) and In Case of Emergency (Viewers: #4, 2.98 million; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 3), and the CW’s One Tree Hill (Viewers: #5, 2.26 million; A18-49: #5, 0.9/ 2).

CBS moved into the winner’s circle at 10 p.m. courtesy of CSI: NY, despite a below-average 13.41 million viewers with a 3.8/10 among adults 18-49. Second was NBC’s Medium (Viewers: 8.67 million; A18-49: 3.1/ 8), which would be a better fit back in its original Monday 10 p.m. time period (out of Heroes), followed by ABC’s Primetime Live at 5.76 million viewers and a 2.1/ 6 among adults 18-49. Although ABC’s performance is nothing to crow about, growth for Primetime Live out of lead-in In Case of Emergency of 2.78 million viewers and 75 percent among adults 18-49 keeps it off the loser’s list.

Wow - those numbers for One Tree Hill are really bad. I watched it last night because I didn't feel like watching people attempt to sing. I thought it was kind of boring. Nothing really happened, at least nothing I cared about. Does anyone think the ratings will pick back up once it faces the results show or will they stay this low?

Agreed. I'm not home on Wednesday evenings, but I Tivo "The Knights of Prosperity" and "In Case of Emergency" each week and love them both!

What is so interesting about Simon making fun of the contestants and telling them that they have zero talent and should live under a rock? Don't people hate it when others make fun of them? Why do they keep watching when it is another person being made fun of? American Idol seriously does not deserve 33 million viewers.

Hm. Despite a weaker (relatively... still a powerhouse, obviously) Idol, OTH didn't rise at all... even dropped some in CW's demo target. Less than Idol, Beauty & the Geek might be killed OTH, with its more gender-balanced viewership. OTH relies on young women.

I think CW really botched it with OTH (which I do enjoy and check out during the AI commercials), unless of course they were intentionally trying to kill it. It had momentum in mid-December, they should have kept airing new episodes then rather than going to repeats. As if it could beat AI. Please. Plus the new plot that has Brooke chasing a guy from Laguna Beach is cute, but let's face it, not a ratings blockbuster. And they made the mistake of actually pairing Lucas with Peyton, so that's now a snorefest instead of being suspenseful. Real soaps never pair up their starcrossed couple for long.

Criminal Minds, Criminal Intent, they are all the same to this viewer.

Good news for all these shows is that AI fans know to just tune in the last five minutes of the results show, so they should see their ratings inch up a bit. Bad news is that hardcore AI fans will watch the whole results show.
