Prime Time Ratings:
Tuesday 4/10/07

The following results are based on the fast national ratings (Live Plus Same Day data)

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 23.78 million, CBS: 11.60, ABC: 11.58, NBC: 6.34, CW: 2.21

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 9.4 rating/25 share, CBS: 3.0/ 8, ABC: 2.9/ 8, NBC: 2.1/ 6, CW: 0.9/ 3

----------

-Yesterday’s Winners:
American Idol (Fox), NCIS (CBS), House (Fox), Dancing With the Stars (ABC)

-Honorable Mention:
Boston Legal (ABC)

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
Dateline (NBC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox, as usual, roared to the winning Tuesday finish line courtesy of the one-two punch of American Idol (Viewers: 26.00 million; A18-49: 10.0 rating/28 share) and House (Viewers: 21.55 million; A18-49: 8.7/22). But also worth positively noting last night was ABC’s Dancing With the Stars live results show, which snagged an impressive (and second-place) 17.01 million viewers and a 4.1/10 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m. Comparably, that outdelivered highlights from Monday’s telecast at 8 p.m. (Viewers: #3, 7.24 million; A18-49: #3, 1.8/ 5) by 9.77 million viewers and 128 percent among adults 18-49. So long, Leeza!

Second behind the American Idol steamroller at 8 p.m. was CBS’ reliable (and…all together now…underrated) NCIS, at 14.36 million viewers and a 3.3/ 9 among adults 18-49. Third was the aforementioned Dancing With the Stars clips show, followed by NBC’s Dateline (Viewers: 5.01 million; A18-49: 1.7/ 5), and a repeat of the now grating Gilmore Girls on The CW (Viewers: 1.79 million; A18-49: 0.7/ 2). At this point, does anyone really care who Lorelai ends up with?

Considering that the combination of House and Dancing With the Stars totaled 38.56 million viewers from 9-10 p.m., there was not much audience left elsewhere. CBS military drama The Unit ranked a distant third with 10.47 million viewers and a 2.8/ 7 among adults 18-49, followed by a repeat of NBC’s Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Viewers: 5.57 million; A18-49: 1.8/ 5), and Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll on The CW at 2.64 million viewers and a 1.2/ 3 in the demo. Although growth for Pussycat Dolls out of the Gilmore Girls encore of 840,000 viewers and 71 percent in the demo keeps it off the loser’s listing, let’s be honest: this is still not positive.

Opposite repeats, ABC’s Boston Legal posted a rare 10 p.m. victory, with 10.48 million viewers and a 2.9/ 8 among adults 18-49 (tied with CBS). But before anyone at the alphabet net grabs a bottle of bubbly, retention for Boston Legal out of the second half-hour of lead-in Dancing With the Stars (Viewers: 17.46 million; A18-49: 4.2/11) was just 60 percent in viewers and 69 percent in the demo. Also in the hour was a repeat of CBS’ Criminal Minds (Viewers: #2, 9.97 million; A18-49: #1t, 2.9/ 8) and a repeat of NBC’s tired Law & Order: SVU at 8.43 million viewers and a 2.7/ 7 in the demo.

So Boston Legal stayed in the mid-10 million range again this week? Based on your overnights of 7.7HH, I expected it to jump to around 12 million. And it didn't break 3.0 in A18-49 either. But DWTS: Results is trending older, like last Spring. DWTS in general is trending older than last Fall -- is it due to younger folks flocking to AI-fueled House on Fox?

Wow! Not the best Tuesday for The CW!

Guess what - on The View, The Brick Awards were mentioned. The lady who was telling about it didn't even know what The CW was. That's CW's main problem - awarness! Geesh!

So the Phyllis Diller appearance didn't boost BL's ratings? Sigh. It appears that BL is stuck with 10 million viewers a week, no matter how many superstar guests it manages to bring on.

I'm still a fan -- but I'd rather have seen Raquel Welch.

Anyone else agree that Criminal Minds did not benefit as much as Grey's Anatomy did -- Post Super bowl. Wish CBS went with another show.

Idol was down 10% in viewers and 17% in adults 18-49 over last season last night, while House was up about 2% in both measures. This continues Idol's recent run of steady declines. It'll be interesting to see if the show can pick it back up towards the end of the season or if it continues on this path. If so, I think that the other networks (ABC in particular) won't be so timid in scheduling against it next season. "Idol" is definitely proving that it's really just like any other series - declining as it ages. For one that's entirely sick of hearing about the Idol steamroller, this is most welcome news.

That's this thing - GA was becoming a post cultural phenom when it aired post SB, and that airing only cemented that. CM is a procedural. It'll never be a pop cultural phenom and none of them really have been (not even CSI, which never got the attention that it's ratings would have otherwise dictated). The series that tend to do the best post SB are these series - the ones on the cusp of breaking out. See Friends, GA.

Go Boston Legal - No. 1. Great news, even though retention was so-so. Another great BL episode!

Like HIMYM to spice up their Monday comedy block.

good news from the CW (at least I think so) they took of the repeats of OTH on Sunday nights. I'm a big fan but I would rather wait till May 2 to see new episodes than to see ratings like the show recieved on Sunday. That was just shameful. I'm still unclear on whether PCD will continue to run on Wednesday's or not.

I tuned into AI last night and was not impressed at all. There just isn't a standout this year (well talent wise) that screams WOW!! House was great as usual :-)

Don't bet on a long-lasting decline. Once better singers come along AI will get 30+ million viewers again next January. Idol is (sadly) just a unstoppable phenomenon.
