Okay, folks...I am off on Monday, so no Saturday analysis this week (as if we really need one!). But what follows are the fast affiliate results by network and by each half-hour for Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007:
Overall Results
CBS Viewers: 7.32 million, A18-49: 1.7 rating/5 share
Fox Viewers: 6.35 million, A18-49: 2.2/ 7
ABC Viewers: 4.51 million, A18-49: 1.5/ 5
NBC Viewers: 4.05 million, A18-49: 1.1/ 4

I know that NCAA Football is focused on the Male demo, but given that, those numbers are still pretty bad. They only thing that may happen with ABC on that night is an adjustment in ad cost for next season.
9:00 p.m. CBS - CSI (R) Viewers: 7.32 million 9:30 p.m. CBS - CSI (R) Viewers: 8.54 million
Some people have very strange TV viewing habits. I just don't understand why a million+ people would be interested in tuning in for the second half of a show like this.

The numbers could be better, no doubt. Like with all sport's ratings, it's all about match-ups. ABC is not getting the high profile teams like USC in primetime very often because of parity and some conferences commitment’s to other TV outlets. Obviously, Okl. and Texas Tech aren't exactly schools with huge national followings. (Note however: since “The Donald” announced the starting line-ups for Tech, I’m sure they we can now proclaim the Texas Tech Red Riders the most popular team in the country).
Also, remember ESPN has a game on at the same time. So basically ABC is functioning as ESPN 3 on Saturday Nights. I think ESPN takes care of the ad selling for SAT night football and the ratings are probably no lower than those for regular ESPN games. I'm pretty sure it is easy to sell that ad-time.
Admittedly, this would make more sense if ABC would have outbid FOX of the BSC championships games. At the very least there would be a payoff at the end of the year. Plus, as much as "musc-rat-burger" annoys me, ESPN/ABC is sooooo much better at college football.

That's exactly what i'm thinking. What do you understand in a procedural show if you haven't seen the first half hour. if i miss the first 5 minutes of this type of shows i don't watch the episode anymore. Maybe i'm stupid. And we're talking about 1.2 million viewers. Very strange.

The Oklahoma-Tech game last night had MAJOR implications for the national championship game. I was exhausted last night and stayed home. Had a bunch of stuff recorded, but watched the game instead.
I was surprised it didn't do better.
Expect much bigger numbers in two weeks on Championship Saturday. It really depends on the matchup.
I still think some of the ideas out there that Marc has thrown out about game shows or alternative programming are great choices.
Original programming would sure be better than repeats.
I know HUT's are lower on Saturday, but the networks have made this a self fulfilling prophecy - and unfortunately, Friday is next.

What many of the procedurals are is comfort television, as odd as it may sound. Viewers of these series know the set-up, and if they flick by it, they'll watch. I think it really is a case of "nothing else on."
Average Sun-Thur rating: 40.0. Friday is 83% of that, Saturday 77%.
The lesson? There's only a 10-15% difference between all HH watching TV Sunday-Thursday and Friday & Saturday. Yes, adults 18-49 ratings are lower (total adults audience is 20% less), but 20% of a 5.0 rating is still a 4 rating. There is a large audience at home on Fridays and Saturdays and the networks can still make a profit if they target it.

Couldn't be that people may actually like the show.

Sure, they may "actually like the show." But if they really liked it, why wouldn't they watch from the beginning?

Hmmm, maybe they were doing housework or forgot it was on or were watching the game and then decided not to anymore so watched the end of this instead. I don't find TV to be that difficult that you can't figure out what's going on about half way through, but maybe some people do.

DB -- this is a great post. People are watching TV. Network HUT levels are low because they have put garbage on those.
Heck, we could probably see some theatricals, or better yet, made for TV movies do better.
One idea I've had for years is for a network to commission two hour reunion movies. I miss those.
Do "Growing Pains," "Who's The Boss," and "Roseanne" for example. A different one each week.
I'm still waiting for my second "ALF" reunion movie where the Tanners show up.
For that matter, I bet DEK would love to do a "Picket Fences" reunion and isn't it time for "Knots Landing" and "Dallas" to reunite.
